Chapter 2: Analysis of Obstacles

Āvaraṇaparicchedo dvitīyaḥ

Verse 1

Sanskrit Text

व्यापि प्रादेशिकोद्रिक्तसमादानविवर्जनम्।
द्वयावरणमाख्यातं नवधा क्लेशलक्षणम्

Transliteration

vyāpi prādeśikodrikta-samādāna-vivarjanam
dvayāvaraṇamākhyātaṃ navadhā kleśalakṣaṇam

Translation

The two veils (dvayāvaraṇa) are described as pervasive (vyāpi), localized (prādeśika), excessive (udrikta), and involving the acceptance and rejection (of vows). The nature of the afflictions (kleśa-lakṣaṇa) is ninefold.


Verse 2

संयोजनान्यावरणमुद्वेगसमुपेक्षयोः।
तत्त्वदृष्टेश्च सत्कायदृष्टेस्तद्‍वस्तुनोऽपि च

Transliteration

saṃyojanānyāvaraṇamudvega-samupekṣayoḥ
tattvadṛṣṭeśca satkāyadṛṣṭestadvastuno’pi ca

Translation

The fetters (saṃyojana) are obstacles to equanimity (samupekṣā) and the sense of urgency (udvega); to the vision of reality (tattva-dṛṣṭi); and to the view of a self-existing body (satkāya-dṛṣṭi) as well as its objective basis.


Verse 3

निरोधमार्गरत्नेषु लाभसत्कार एव च।
सङ्‍क्लेशस्य परिज्ञाने शुभादौ दशधाऽपरम्

Transliteration

nirodhamārgaratneṣu lābhasatkāra eva ca
saṅkleśasya parijñāne śubhādau daśadhā’param

Translation

There are obstacles regarding the Jewels (ratna) of Cessation (nirodha) and the Path (mārga), and regarding gain and honor (lābha-satkāra). Furthermore, there are ten kinds of obstacles regarding the full knowledge of defilement (saṅkleśa) and the cultivation of the wholesome (śubha).

अप्रयोगोऽनायतनेऽयोगविहितश्च यः।
नोत्पत्तिरमनस्कारः सम्भारस्याऽप्रपूर्णता

Transliteration

aprayogo’nāyatane’yogavihitaśca yaḥ
notpattiramanaskāraḥ sambhārasyā’prapūrṇatā

Translation

(These ten are:) Non-application (aprayoga), abiding in the wrong place (anāyatana), following a wrong path (ayoga-vihita), non-arising (of insight), lack of mental attention (amanaskāra), and the incompleteness of the equipment (sambhāra-aprapūrṇatā) (for enlightenment).

गोत्रमित्रस्य वैधुर्यं चित्तस्य परिखेदिता।
प्रतिपत्तेश्च वैधुर्यं कुदुष्टजनवासता

Transliteration

gotramitrasya vaidhuryaṃ cittasya parikheditā
pratipatteśca vaidhuryaṃ kuduṣṭajanavāsatā

Translation

The lack of the spiritual lineage (gotra) and spiritual friends (mitra), the exhaustion of the mind (citta-parikheditā), the lack of correct practice (pratipatti-vaidhurya), and dwelling among wicked or evil people.


Verse 6

दौष्ठुल्यमवशिष्टत्वं त्रयात् प्रज्ञाऽविपक्वता।
प्रकृत्या चैव दौष्ठुल्यं कौसीद्यं च प्रमादिता

Transliteration

dauṣṭhulyamavaśiṣṭatvaṃ trayāt prajñā’vipakvatā
prakṛtyā caiva dauṣṭhulyaṃ kausīdyaṃ ca pramāditā

Translation

Inner clumsiness or “bad-state” (dauṣṭhulya), residues (avaśiṣṭatva) from the three (poisons), the unripeness of wisdom (prajñā-avipakvatā), natural inner stiffness, laziness (kausīdya), and heedlessness (pramāditā).


Verse 7

सक्तिर्भवे च भोगे च लीनचित्तत्वमेव च।
अश्रद्धाऽनधिमुक्तिश्च यथारुतविचारणा

Transliteration

saktirbhave ca bhoge ca līnacittatvameva ca
aśraddhā’nadhimuktiśca yathārutavicāraṇā

Translation

Attachment (sakti) to existence (bhava) and to enjoyments (bhoga), a depressed or withdrawn state of mind (līna-cittatva), lack of faith (aśraddhā), lack of resolve (anadhimukti), and literalist inquiry (yathāruta-vicāraṇā).


Verse 8

सद्धर्मेऽगौरवं लाभे गुरुताऽकृपता तथा।
श्रुतव्यसनमल्पत्वं समाध्यपरिकर्मिता

Transliteration

saddharme’gauravaṃ lābhe gurutā’kṛpatā tathā
śrutavyasanamalpatvaṃ samādhyaparikarmitā

Translation

Lack of respect for the True Dharma (sad-dharma), over-valuing gain, lack of compassion (akṛpatā), loss or meagerness of learning (śruta), and the lack of preparation for meditative concentration (samādhi).


Verse 9

शुभं बोधिः समादानं धीमत्त्वाऽभ्रान्त्यनावृती।
नृत्यत्रासोऽमत्सरित्वं वशित्वञ्च शुभादयः

Transliteration

śubhaṃ bodhiḥ samādānaṃ dhīmattvā’bhrāntyanāvṛti
nṛtyatrāso’matsaritvaṃ vaśitvañca śubhādayaḥ

Translation

The wholesome qualities include: the good (śubha), awakening (bodhi), taking of vows (samādāna), wisdom (dhīmattva), non-delusion (abhrānti), being unobstructed, lack of fear (in the face of emptiness), non-stinginess (amatsaritva), and mastery (vaśitva).


Verse 10

त्रीणि त्रीणि च एतेषां ज्ञेयान्यावरणानि हि।
पक्ष्यपारमिताभूमिष्वन्यदावरणं पुनः

Transliteration

trīṇi trīṇi ca eteṣāṃ jñeyānyāvaraṇāni hi
pakṣyapāramitābhūmiṣvanyadāvaraṇaṃ punaḥ

Translation

For each of these, three obstacles are to be known. Furthermore, there are other obstacles regarding the wings (of awakening) (pakṣya), the perfections (pāramitā), and the stages (bhūmi).


Verse 11

वस्त्वकौशलकौसीद्यं समाधेर्द्वयहीनता।
अरोपणाऽथ दौर्बल्यं दृष्टिदौष्ठुल्यदुष्टता

Transliteration

vastvakauśalakausīdyaṃ samādherdwayahīnatā
aropaṇā’tha daurbalyaṃ dṛṣṭidauṣṭhulyaduṣṭatā

Translation

Lack of skill in the object (vastu-akauśala), laziness (kausīdya), being deficient in the two (factors) of concentration (samādhi), failing to cultivate (aropaṇā), weakness (daurbalya), and the corruption of views through “bad-states” (dauṣṭhulya).


Verse 12

ऐश्वर्यस्याऽथ सुगतेः सत्त्वाऽत्यागस्य चावृतिः।
हानिवृद्‍ध्योश्च दोषाणां गुणानामवतारणे

Transliteration

aiśvaryasyā’tha sugateḥ sattvā’tyāgasya cāvṛtiḥ
hānivṛddhyośca doṣāṇāṃ guṇānāmavatāraṇe

Translation

There is a veil over sovereignty (aiśvarya), over reaching a good state (sugati), and over not abandoning sentient beings (sattva-atyāga). (There are veils) regarding the decrease of faults (doṣa) and the increase/introduction of virtues (guṇa).


Verse 13

विमोचनेऽक्षयत्वे च नैरन्तर्ये शुभस्य च।
नियतीकरणे धर्मसम्भोगपरिपाचने

Transliteration

vimocane’kṣayatve ca nairantarye śubhasya ca
niyatīkaraṇe dharmasambhoga-paripācane

Translation

(Obstacles exist) regarding liberation (vimocana), inexhaustibility (akṣayatva), the continuity (nairantarya) of the wholesome, making things certain (niyatīkaraṇa), and the enjoyment and ripening of the Dharma.


Verse 14

सर्वत्रगार्थे अग्रार्थे निष्यन्दाग्रार्थ एव च।
निष्परिग्रहतार्थ च सन्तानाऽभेद एव च

Transliteration

sarvatragārthe agrārthe niṣyandāgrārtha eva ca
niṣparigrahatārtha ca santānā’bheda eva ca

Translation

(There are veils regarding) the meaning of pervasiveness (sarvatragārtha), the meaning of supremacy (agrārtha), the meaning of the supreme outflow (niṣyandāgra-artha), the meaning of non-attachment (niṣparigrahatā), and the meaning of the non-difference of the mind-stream (santāna-abheda).


Verse 15

निस्सङ्‍क्लेशविशुद्ध्यर्थेऽनानात्वार्थ एव च।
अहीनाऽनधिकार्थे च चतुर्धावशिताश्रये

Transliteration

nissaṅkleśaviśuddhyarthe’nānātvārtha eva ca
ahīnā’nadhikārthe ca caturdhāvaśitāśraye

Translation

(Also) the meaning of purification from defilement (nissaṅkleśa-viśuddhi), the meaning of non-duality/non-plurality (anānātva), the meaning of neither decrease nor increase (ahīna-anadhika), and the fourfold basis of mastery (vaśitā-āśraya).


Verse 16

धर्मधातावविद्येयमक्लिष्टा दशधावृतिः।
दशभूमिविपक्षेण प्रतिपक्षास्तु भूमयः

Transliteration

dharmadhātāvavidyeyamakliṣṭā daśadhāvṛtiḥ
daśabhūmivipakṣeṇa pratipakṣāstu bhūmayaḥ

Translation

In the Dharma-realm (dharmadhātu), this unafflicted ignorance (akliṣṭā-avidyā) is a tenfold veil. Since they are the antidotes (pratipakṣa) to these (obstacles) of the ten stages (daśabhūmi), the stages themselves are (the path).


Verse 17

क्लेशावरणमाख्यातं ज्ञेयावरणमेव च।
सर्वाण्यावरणानीह यत्‍क्षयान्मुक्तिरिष्यते

Transliteration

kleśāvaraṇamākhyātaṃ jñeyāvaraṇameva ca
sarvāṇyāvaraṇānīha yatkṣayānmuktiriṣyate

Translation

The Veil of Afflictions (kleśāvaraṇa) and the Veil of the Cognizable (jñeyāvaraṇa) are described; these comprise all obstacles here, through the exhaustion (kṣaya) of which liberation (mukti) is sought.
