Chapter 1
/ namo ratnatrayāya //
Verse 1.1
Transliteration
sarvadoṣavinirmuktaṃ guṇaiḥ sarvairalaṃkṛtam / praṇamya sarvajñamahaṃ sarvasattvaikabāndhavam
Translation
I bow down to the Omniscient, Freed from all defects, Adorned with all good qualities, The sole friend of all beings.
Verse 1.5
Transliteration
śrāddhatvābhdajate dharmaṃ prājñatvādvetti tattvataḥ / prajñā pradhānaṃ tvanayoḥ śraddhā pūrvaṃgamāsya tu
Translation
Due to having faith one relies on the practices, Due to having wisdom one truly knows. Of these two wisdom is the chief, Faith is its prerequisite.
Verse 1.6
Transliteration
chandād dveṣābhdayānmohādyo dharmaṃ nātivartate / sa śrāddha iti vijñeyaḥ śreyaso bhājanaṃ param
Translation
One who does not neglect the practices Through desire, hatred, fear, or bewilderment Is known as one of faith, A superior vessel for definite goodness.
Verse 1.7
Transliteration
kāyavāṅmānasaṃ karma sarvaṃ samyakparीkṣya yaḥ / parātmahitamājñāya sadā kuryātsa paṇडitaḥ
Translation
Having analysed well, All deeds of body, speech, and mind, Those who realize what benefit self and others And always perform these are wise.
Verse 1.8
Transliteration
ahiṃsā cauryaviratiḥ paradāravivarjanam / mithyāpaiśunyपāruṣyābaddhavāदेषु saṃyamaḥ
Translation
Not killing, not stealing, Forsaking the mates of others, Refraining completely from false, Divisive, harsh, and senseless speech,
Verse 1.9
Transliteration
lobhavyāpādanāstikyadṛṣṭīnāṃ parivarjanam / ete karmapathāḥ śuklā daśa kṛष्ṇā viparyayāt
Translation
Thoroughly forsaking covetousness, harmful intent, And the views of Nihilists – These are the ten gleaming paths of action; Their opposites are dark.
Verse 1.10
Transliteration
amadyपānaṃ svājīvo ‘vihiṃsā dānamādarāt / pūjypūjā ca maitrī ca dharmaścaiṣa samāsataḥ
Translation
Not drinking intoxicants, a good livelihood, Non-harming, respectful giving, Honouring the honourable, and love – Practice in brief is that.
Verse 1.11
Transliteration
śarीratāpanāddharmaḥ kevalā(nnāsti tena hi) / na paradrohaviratirna paresāmanugrahaḥ
Translation
Practice is not done by just Mortifying the body, For one has not forsaken injuring others And is not helping others.
Verse 1.20
Transliteration
lobho dveṣaśca mohaśca tajjaṃ karmeti cāśubham / alobhāmohādveṣāśca tajjaṃ karmetaracchubham
Translation
Desire, hatred, ignorance, and The actions they generate are non-virtues. Non-desire, non-hatred, non-ignorance, And the actions they generate are virtues.
Verse 1.22
Transliteration
nivṛttiraśubhātkṛtsnātpravṛttistu śubहे sadā / manasā karmaṇā vाcā dharmo ‘yaṃ dvividhaḥ smृtaḥ
Translation
Desisting from all non-virtues And always engaging in virtues With body, speech, and mind – These are called the three forms of practice.
Verse 1.26
Transliteration
nāsmyahaṃ na bhaviष्yāmi na me ‘sti na bhaviष्yati / iti bālasya saṃtrāsaḥ paṇडitasya bhayakṣayaḥ
Translation
“I am not, I will not be. I have not, I will not have,” That frightens all the childish And extinguishes fear in the wise.
Verse 1.29
Transliteration
ahaṃkārodbhavāḥ skandhāḥ so ‘haṃkāरो ‘nṛto ‘rthataḥ / bीjaṃ yasyānṛtaṃ tasya prarohaḥ satyataḥ kutaḥ
Translation
The mental and physical aggregates arise From the conception of I which is false in fact. How could what is grown From a false seed be true?
Verse 1.30
Transliteration
skandhānasatyān dṛष्ṭvaivamahaṃkāराः prahीyate / ahaṃkāraprahāṇācca na punaḥ skandhasaṃbhavaḥ
Translation
Having seen thus the aggregates as untrue, The conception of I is abandoned, And due to abandoning the conception of I The aggregates arise no more.
Verse 1.33
Transliteration
yathādarśamanādāya svमukhapratibimbakam / na dृśyate tathā skandhānanādāyāhamityapi
Translation
Just as without depending on a mirror The image of one’s face is not seen, So too the conception of I does not exist Without depending on the aggregates.
Verse 1.42
Transliteration
na cābhāvo ‘pi nirvānaṃ kuta eva tasya[vāsya] bhāvatā / bhāvābhāvaparāmarśakṣayo nirvāṇamucyate
Translation
If nirvana is not a non-thing, Just how could it have thingness? The extinction of the misconception Of things and non-things is called nirvana.
Verse 1.49
Transliteration
hrasve ‘sati punardीrghaṃ na bhavati svabhāvataḥ / pradीpasyāpyanutpādātprabhāyā apyasaṃbhavaḥ
Translation
When there is long, there is short. They do not exist through their own nature, Just as due to the non-production Of a flame, light also does not arise.
Verse 1.56
Transliteration
marीcipratimaṃ lokamevamastीti gṛṇhataḥ / nāstीti cāpi moho ‘yaṃ sati mohe na mucyate
Verse 1.57
Transliteration
nāstiko durgatiṃ yātिṃ sugatiṃ yati cāstikaḥ / yathābhūtaparijñānānmokṣamadvayaniśritaḥ
Translation
A follower of non-existence goes to bad transmigrations, And a follower of existence goes to happy transmigrations. Through correct and true knowledge One does not rely on dualism and becomes liberated.
Verse 1.68
Transliteration
kṣaṇike sarvathā bhāve kutaḥ kācitpurāṇatā / sthairyādakष्aṇike cāpi kutaḥ kācitpurāṇatā
Translation
If momentary, then it becomes entirely non-existent; Hence how could it be old? Also if non-momentary, it is constant; Hence how could it be old?
Chapter 2
Verse 2.2
Transliteration
sarvadharmā anātmāna ityato bhāष्itaṃ jinaiḥ / dhātuष्aṭkaṃ ca taiḥ sarvaṃ nirṇitaṃ tacca nārthataḥ
Translation
Therefore the Conquerors said, “All phenomena are selfless.” Since this is so, all six constituents Have been delineated as selfless for you.
Verse 2.3
Transliteration
naivamātmā na cānātmā yāthābhūtyena labhyate / ātmānātmakṛte dृष्ṭी vavārāsmānmahāmuniḥ
Translation
Thus neither self nor non-self Are to be apprehended as real. Therefore the Great Subduer rejected Views of self and of non-self.
Verse 2.19
Transliteration
vināśayati durjñāto dharmo ‘yamavipaścitam / nāstitādृष्ṭिसmale yasmādasminnimajjati
Translation
This doctrine wrongly understood Causes the unwise to be ruined Because they sink into the uncleanliness Of nihilistic views.
Verse 2.24
Transliteration
dharmasyāsyāparijñānādahaṃkāro ‘nuvartate / tataḥ śubhāśubhaṃ karma tato janma śubhāśubham
Translation
If this doctrine is not understood thoroughly, The conception of an I prevails, Hence come virtuous and non-virtuous actions Which give rise to good and bad rebirths.
Verse 2.25
Transliteration
tasmādyāvadavijñāto dharmo ‘haṃkāraśātanaḥ / dānaśीllakṣamādharme tāvadādaravān bhava
Translation
Therefore, as long as the doctrine removing The conception of I is not known, Take heed of the practices Of giving, ethics, and patience.
Verse 2.28
Transliteration
dharma eva parā nītirdharmālloko ‘nurajyate / rañjitena hi lokena neha nāmutra vañcyate
Translation
The practices are the best policy, It is through them that the world is pleased; Neither here nor in the future is one cheated By a world that has been pleased.
Verse 2.37
Transliteration
upaśāntasya gāmbhीryaṃ gāmbhीryādgauravaṃ param / gauravāddीptirājñā ca tasmādupaśamaṃ bhaja
Translation
In peace there is profundity. From profundity the highest respect arises, From respect come influence and command, Therefore observe peace.
Verse 2.38
Transliteration
ahāryabuddhiḥ prājñatvādaparapratyayaḥ sthiraḥ / nātisaṃdhीyate rājā tasmātprajñāparo bhava
Translation
From wisdom one has a mind unshakable, Non-reliance on others, firmness, And is not deceived. Therefore, O King, be intent on wisdom.
Verse 2.39
Transliteration
satyatyāgaśamaprajño caturbhadro narādhipaḥ / dharmaścaturbhadra iva stūyate devamānuष्aiḥ
Translation
A lord of humanity having the four goodnessesTruth, generosity, peace, and wisdomIs praised by gods and humans As are the four good practices themselves.
Verse 2.43
Transliteration
jीvitārogyarājyānāṃ cintayānityatāṃ sadā / tataḥ saṃvegavān dharmamekāntena prayāsyase
Translation
Always considering the impermanence Of life, health, and dominion, You thereby will make intense effort Solely at the practices.
Verse 2.46
Transliteration
madyātparibhavo loke kāryahānirdhanakṣayaḥ / ākāryakaraṇaṃ mohāt madyaṃ tyaja tataḥ sadā
Translation
Intoxicants lead to worldly scorn, Your affairs are ruined, wealth is wasted, The unsuitable is done from delusion, Therefore always avoid intoxicants.

Chapter 4
Verse 4.4
Transliteration
satyaṃ ślakष्ṇārthavatpathyaṃ śiष्yaḥ kāले ‘nukampayā / vācya ityāha bhagavāṃstadevamabhidhीyase
Translation
The Supramundane Victor said that students are to be told The truth – gentle, meaningful, and salutary – At the proper time and from compassion. That is why you are being told all this.
Verse 4.15
Transliteration
bhuktādarthādiha sukhaṃ dattātpāratrikaṃ sukham / abhuktādattanaष्ṭatvādduष्khameva kutaḥ sukham
Translation
Through using wealth there is happiness here in this life, Through giving there is happiness in the future, From wasting it without using or giving it away, There is only misery. How could there be happiness?
Verse 4.29
Transliteration
jñānavṛddhāḥ kule jātā nyāyajñāḥ pāpabhीravaḥ / sametā bahavo nityaṃ santu te kāryadarśinaḥ
Translation
Let there always be around you many persons Old in experience, of good lineage, Knowing good policy, who shrink from ill deeds, Are agreeable, and know what should be done.
Verse 4.38
Transliteration
svatantraḥ paśya sarvaṃ ca viष्ayaṃ cāracakṣuṣā / nityāप्रमत्ताः smṛtimān kuru kāryaṃ ca dhārmikam
Translation
In order to maintain control, oversee all the country Through the eyes of agents. Always conscientious and mindful, Do what accords with the practices.
Verse 4.46
Transliteration
caturdvीpamapi prāpya pृथिवीṃ cakravartinaḥ / śāर्ीराṃ mānasaṃ caiva sukhadvayamidaṃ matam
Translation
Although Universal Monarchs rule Over the four continents, their pleasures Are regarded as only twoThe physical and the mental.
Verse 4.47
Transliteration
duष्khapratikriyāmātraṃ śāर्ीराṃ vedanāsukham / saṃjñāmayaṃ mānasaṃ tu kevalaं kalpanākृtam
Translation
Physical feelings of pleasure Are only a lessening of pain. Mental pleasures are made of thought, Created only by conceptuality.
Verse 4.53
Transliteration
indriyairupalabdhasya viष्ayasyākृtiṃ manaḥ / upalabhya vyatीtasya kalpayan manyate sukham
Translation
The mind apprehends an image of a past object Which has been apprehended by the senses And imagines and fancies It to be pleasurable.
Verse 4.55
Transliteration
pratीtya mātāpitarau yathoktaḥ putrasaṃbhavaḥ / cakṣūrūpe pratीtyaivamukto vijñānasaṃbhavaḥ
Translation
Just as a child is said to be born In dependence on a father and a mother, So a visual consciousness is said to arise In dependence on an eye sense and on a form.
Verse 4.57
Transliteration
alātacakraṃ gृṇhāti yathā cakṣurviparyayāt / tathendriyāṇi gृṇhanti viष्ayān sāṃpratāniva
Translation
Just as due to error the eye perceives A whirling firebrand as a wheel, So the senses apprehend Present objects as if real.
Verse 4.63
Transliteration
sukhe saṃyogatृष्ṇaivaṃ naiḥsvābhāvyātprahीyate / duष्khe viyogatृष्ṇā ca paśyatāṃ muktirityataḥ
Translation
Thus attachment to meeting with pleasure And attachment to separating from pain Are to be abandoned because they do not inherently exist. Thereby those who see thus are liberated.
Verse 4.72
Transliteration
viष्eṇāpi viष्aṃ hanyādyathaivoktaं cikitsakaiḥ / duष्khenāpyahitaṃ hanyādityukte kiṃ virudhyate
Translation
Just as it is explained in medicine That poison can removed by poison, What contradiction is there in saying That what is injurious (in the future) can be removedby suffering?
Verse 4.75
Transliteration
mātrāsukhaparityāgāt paścāccedvipulaṃ sukham / tyajenmātrāsukhaṃ dhीराः saṃpaśyan vipulaṃ sukham
Translation
If through relinquishing small pleasures There is extensive happiness later, Seeing the greater happiness The resolute should relinquish small pleasures.
Verse 4.80
Transliteration
dānaśीllakṣamāvीryadhyānपrajñākृpātmakam / mahāyānamatastasmin kasmāddurbhāष्itaं vacaḥ
Translation
The Great Vehicle has a nature Of giving, ethics, patience, effort, Concentration, wisdom, and compassion. Hence how could there be any bad explanations in it?
Verse 4.81
Transliteration
parārtho dānaśीllābhyāṃ kṣāntyā vीryeṇa cātmanaḥ / dhyānaṃ prajñā ca mokṣāya mahāyānārthasaṃgrahaḥ
Translation
Others’ aims are (achieved) through giving and ethics. One’s own are (achieved) through patience and effort. Concentration and wisdom are causes of liberation. These epitomize the sense of the Great Vehicle.
Verse 4.94
Transliteration
yathaiva vaiyākaraṇo mātृkāmapi pāṭhayet / buddho ‘vadattathā dharmaṃ vineyānāṃ yathākष्amam
Translation
Just as a grammarian (first) has students Read a model of the alphabet, So Buddha taught trainees The doctrines that they could bear.
