तत्र कतमे चत्वारो ब्रह्मविहाराः ?

There, what are the four divine abodes (brahmavihāras)?

इह भिक्षवो भिक्षुर्मैत्रीसहगतेन चित्तेन अवैरेण असंपन्नेन अव्याबाधेन…
Translation
Here, a monk (dwells) with a mind accompanied by loving-kindness (maitrī), without enmity, without hostility, and without ill-will…

विपुलेन महद्गतेन अप्रमाणेन सुभावितेन एकां दिशमधिमुच्य स्फुरित्वा उपसंपद्य विहरति,
Translation
…with a mind that is vast, grown great, immeasurable, and well-cultivated; having pervaded one direction with focused intent, he dwells…

तथा द्वितीयम् , तथा तृतीयम्, तथा चतुर्थम्, इति ऊर्ध्वमधस्तिर्यक् सर्वशः…
Translation
…likewise the second, third, and fourth; thus above, below, across, and everywhere…
