(११) चतस्रः प्रतिसंविदः (प्रतिपदः) — The Four Modes of Progress

Sanskrit

तत्र कतमाश्चतस्रः प्रतिसंविदः ?

Translation

In that regard, what are the four analytical insights (here described as modes of progress)?


Sanskrit

अस्ति दुःखा प्रतिपद् धन्धाभिज्ञा। अस्ति दुःखा प्रतिपत् क्षिप्राभिज्ञा।

Translation

There is painful practice with slow realization. There is painful practice with quick realization.


Sanskrit

अस्ति सुखा प्रतिपद् धन्धाभिज्ञा। अस्ति सुखा प्रतिपत् क्षिप्राभिज्ञा।

Translation

There is pleasant practice with slow realization. There is pleasant practice with quick realization.


I. दुःखा प्रतिपद् धन्धाभिज्ञा — Painful Practice, Slow Realization

Sanskrit

तत्र कतमा सा दुःखा प्रतिपद् धन्धाभिज्ञा ?

Translation

What is that painful practice with slow realization?


Sanskrit

इहैकत्यः प्रकृत्यैव तीव्ररागो भवति, तीव्रद्वेषो भवति, तीव्रमोहो भवति।

Translation

Here, a certain person is by nature full of intense passion, intense hatred, and intense delusion.


Sanskrit

सोऽभीक्ष्णं तीव्ररागजं… द्वेषजं… मोहजं दुःखदौर्मनस्यं प्रतिसंवेदयति।

Translation

He frequently experiences the pain and mental grief born of intense passion, hatred, and delusion.


Sanskrit

तस्येमानि पञ्च लोकोत्तराणि इन्द्रियाणि धन्धानि भवन्ति मृदूनि असिघ्रवाहीनि।

Translation

His five supramundane faculties are sluggish, weak, and not fast-acting.


Sanskrit

कतमानि पञ्च ? यदुत श्रद्धेन्द्रियं वीर्येन्द्रियं स्मृतीन्द्रियं समाधीन्द्रियं प्रज्ञेन्द्रियम्।

Translation

Which five? Namely: faith, energy, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom.


Sanskrit

स एषां… मृदुत्वात्… धन्धमेवानन्तर्यसमाधिं स्पृशति यदुत आस्रवाणां क्षयाय।

Translation

Because these faculties are weak, he only slowly reaches the immediate concentration for the destruction of the outflows (asravas).

इयं दुःखा प्रतिपद्धन्धाभिज्ञा।

Translation

This is painful practice with slow realization.


II. दुःखा प्रतिपत् क्षिप्राभिज्ञा — Painful Practice, Quick Realization

Sanskrit

तत्र कतमा दुःखा प्रतिपत् क्षिप्राभिज्ञा ?

Translation

What is painful practice with quick realization?


Sanskrit

इहैकत्यः प्रकृत्यैव तीव्ररागो भवति, तीव्रद्वेषो भवति, तीव्रमोहो भवति।

Translation

Here, one is by nature full of intense passion, hatred, and delusion (feeling much pain).


Sanskrit

तस्येमानि पञ्च लोकोत्तराणि इन्द्रियाणि अधिमात्राणि भवन्ति तीक्ष्णानि शीघ्रवाहीनि।

Translation

(However), his five supramundane faculties are superior, sharp, and fast-acting.


Sanskrit

स एषां… अधिमात्रत्वात्… क्षिप्रमेवानन्तर्यं समाधिं स्पृशति यदुत आस्रवाणां क्षयाय।

Translation

Because of the superiority and sharpness of these faculties, he quickly reaches immediate concentration for the destruction of the outflows.

इयं दुःखा प्रतिपत् क्षिप्राभिज्ञा॥

Translation

This is painful practice with quick realization.


III. सुखा प्रतिपद् धन्धाभिज्ञा — Pleasant Practice, Slow Realization

Sanskrit

तत्र कतमा सुखा प्रतिपद्धन्धाभिज्ञा ?

Translation

What is pleasant practice with slow realization?


Sanskrit

इहैकत्यः प्रकृत्यैव अल्परागो भवति, अल्पद्वेषो भवति (अल्पमोहः)।

Translation

Here, one is by nature of little passion, little hatred, and little delusion.


Sanskrit

सोऽल्परागतया नाभीक्ष्णं रागजं दुःखदौर्मनस्यं प्रतिसंवेदयति।

Translation

Due to having little passion, he does not frequently experience the pain and grief born of passion (etc.).


Sanskrit

तस्येमानि पञ्च लोकोत्तराणीन्द्रियाणि धन्धानि भवन्ति मृदूनि न तीक्ष्णानि न शीघ्रवाहीनि।

Translation

(But) his five supramundane faculties are sluggish, weak, not sharp, and not fast-acting.


Sanskrit

स एषां… धन्धात्वात्… धन्धमेवानन्तर्यं समाधिं स्पृशति यदुतास्रवाणां क्षयाय।

Translation

Because his faculties are sluggish, he only slowly reaches the concentration for the destruction of outflows.


Sanskrit

इयं सुखा प्रतिपद्धन्धाभिज्ञा॥

Translation

This is pleasant practice with slow realization.


IV. सुखा प्रतिपत् क्षिप्राभिज्ञा — Pleasant Practice, Quick Realization

तत्र कतमा सुखा प्रतिपत् क्षिप्राभिज्ञा ?

Translation

What is pleasant practice with quick realization?


Sanskrit

इहैकत्यः प्रकृत्यैवाल्परागो भवति, अल्पद्वेषोऽल्पमोहः।

Translation

Here, one is by nature of little passion, little hatred, and little delusion.

तस्येमानि पञ्च लोकोत्तराणीन्द्रियाण्यधिमात्राणि तीक्ष्णानि शीघ्रवाहीनि।

Translation

(And) his five supramundane faculties are superior, sharp, and fast-acting.

स एषां… शीघ्रवाहित्वाच्च क्षिप्रमेवानन्तर्यं समाधिं स्पृशति यदुत आस्रवाणां क्षयाय।

Translation

Because his faculties are superior and fast-acting, he quickly reaches concentration for the destruction of outflows.


Sanskrit

इयमुच्यते सुखा प्रतिपत्क्षिप्राभिज्ञा। इमा भिक्षवः चतस्रः प्रतिसंविदः॥

Translation

This is called pleasant practice with quick realization. These, monks, are the four modes.
