(१६) पञ्चेन्द्रियाणि — The Five Spiritual Faculties

Sanskrit

तत्र भिक्षवः कतमानि पञ्चेन्द्रियाणि ?

Translation

There, O monks, what are the five faculties?


Sanskrit

यदुत श्रद्धेन्द्रियं वीर्येन्द्रियं स्मृतीन्द्रियं समाधीन्द्रियं प्रज्ञेन्द्रियम्।

Translation

Namely: the faculty of faith, the faculty of energy, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration, and the faculty of wisdom.


Sanskrit

तत्र कतमच्छ्रद्धेन्द्रियम्?

Translation

There, what is the faculty of faith?


Sanskrit

यया श्रद्धया चतुरो धर्मान् श्रद्दधाति। कतमांश्चतुरः?

Translation

It is the faith by which one has faith in four things. Which four?


Sanskrit

संसारावचरालौकिकीं सम्यग्दृष्टिं दधाति। स कर्मविपाकप्रतिशरणो भवति।

Translation

One maintains a worldly right view regarding the realm of samsara; one takes refuge in the law of karma and its results.


Sanskrit

यद्यदेव कर्म करिष्यामि कल्याणं वा पापकं वा, तस्य कर्मणो विपाकं प्रतिसंवेदयामि।

Translation

(Thinking:) “Whatever action I perform, whether good or evil, I shall experience the result of that action.”


Sanskrit

स जीवितहेतोरपि पापकं कर्म नाभिसंस्करोति। इदमुच्यते श्रद्धेन्द्रियम्॥

Translation

One does not perform evil actions even for the sake of one’s life. This is called the faculty of faith.


Sanskrit

तत्र कतमद्वीर्येन्द्रियम्?

Translation

There, what is the faculty of energy?


Sanskrit

यान् धर्मान् श्रेद्धेन्द्रियेण श्रद्दधाति, तान् धर्मान् वीर्येन्द्रियेण समुदानयति। इदमुच्यते वीर्येन्द्रियम्॥

Translation

Those things in which one has faith through the faculty of faith, one brings to completion through the faculty of energy. This is called the faculty of energy.

तत्र कतमत् स्मृतीन्द्रियम्?

Translation

There, what is the faculty of mindfulness?


Sanskrit

यान् धर्मान् वीर्येन्द्रियेण समुदानयति, तान् धर्मान् स्मृतीन्द्रियेण (अनुस्मरति/विप्रणाशयति?)। इदमुच्यते स्मृतीन्द्रियम्॥

Translation

Those things brought to completion through the faculty of energy, those things one remembers/maintains through the faculty of mindfulness. This is called the faculty of mindfulness.

तत्र कतमत् समाधीन्द्रियम्?

Translation

There, what is the faculty of concentration?


Sanskrit

यान् धर्मान् स्मृतीन्द्रियेण अनुसरति, तान् समाधीन्द्रियेण एकाग्रीकरोति। इदमुच्यते समाधीन्द्रियम्॥

Translation

Those things followed through the faculty of mindfulness, those things one makes one-pointed through the faculty of concentration. This is called the faculty of concentration.

तत्र कतमत् प्रज्ञेन्द्रियम्?

Translation

There, what is the faculty of wisdom?


Sanskrit

यान् धर्मान् समाधीन्द्रियेण एकाग्रीकरोति, तान् धर्मान् प्रज्ञेन्द्रियेण प्रतिविध्यति।

Translation

Those things made one-pointed through the faculty of concentration, those things one penetrates through the faculty of wisdom.


Sanskrit

स तेषु धर्मेषु प्रत्यवेक्षणजातीयो भवति। इदमुच्यते प्रज्ञेन्द्रियम्॥

Translation

One becomes of a nature that reflects deeply upon those phenomena. This is called the faculty of wisdom.


Sanskrit

इमानि भिक्षवः पञ्चेन्द्रियाणि॥

Translation

These, O monks, are the five faculties.
