(२१) चत्वारि स्रोतआपत्त्यङ्गानि — The Four Factors of Stream-entry

Sanskrit

तत्र कतमानि चत्वारि स्रोतआपत्त्यङ्गानि ?

Translation

There, what are the four factors for stream-entry?


Sanskrit

इह भिक्षवः श्रावकोऽवेत्य बुद्धे प्रसादेन समन्वागतो भवति-

Translation

Here, O monks, a disciple is endowed with unshakeable faith in the Buddha:


Sanskrit

इत्यपि स भगवांस्तथागतोऽर्हन् सम्यक्संबुद्धो विद्याचरणसंपन्नः सुगतो लोकविदनुत्तरः पुरुषदम्यसारथिः शास्ता देवमनुष्याणां बुद्धो भगवानिति।

Translation

“Thus indeed is the Blessed One: a Tathāgata, an Arhat, a perfectly Awakened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, a Sugata, a knower of the world, unsurpassed, a charioteer of men to be tamed, a teacher of gods and humans, a Buddha, a Blessed One.”


Sanskrit

धर्मेऽवेत्य प्रसादेन समन्वागतो भवति-

Translation

He is endowed with unshakeable faith in the Dharma:


Sanskrit

स्वाख्यातो भगवता धर्मः सांदृष्टिको निर्ज्वरः आकालिक औपनायिकः इहपश्यकः प्रत्यात्मवेदनीयो विज्ञैः…

Translation

“Well-expounded by the Blessed One is the Dharma, visible here and now, feverless, timeless, leading onward, to be seen for oneself, to be realized by the wise individually…”


Sanskrit

यदुत नदनिमदनपधेयासां (?) प्रतिविनय आलयसमुद्धातो धर्मोपच्छेदः शून्यतानुपलम्भः तृष्णाक्षयो निरोधो निर्वाणम्।

Translation

“…namely, the subduing of pride and intoxication, the uprooting of attachment, the severing of the cycle, emptiness beyond perception, the destruction of craving, cessation, Nirvana.”


Sanskrit

संघेऽवेत्य प्रसादेन समन्वागतो भवति-

Translation

He is endowed with unshakeable faith in the Sangha:


Sanskrit

सुप्रतिपन्नो भगवतः आर्यश्रावकसंघो न्यायप्रतिपन्नः सप्रतिपन्नः सामीचिप्रतिपन्नो धर्मानुधर्मप्रतिपन्नोऽनुधर्मचारी।

Translation

“Practicing well is the Blessed One’s community of noble disciples, practicing rightly, practicing properly, practicing with integrity, practicing in accordance with the Dharma, living the Dharma.”


Sanskrit

सन्ति संघे स्रोतापत्तिफलसाक्षात्क्रियायै प्रतिपन्नकाः। सन्ति संघे स्रोतापन्नः।

Translation

“There are in the Sangha those practicing for the realization of the fruit of stream-entry; there are in the Sangha those who are stream-enters.”


Sanskrit

सन्ति संघे सकृदागामिफलसाक्षात्क्रियायै प्रतिपन्नकाः। सन्ति संघे सकृदागामिनः।

Translation

“There are in the Sangha those practicing for the realization of the fruit of once-returning; there are in the Sangha those who are once-returners.”


Sanskrit

सन्ति संघे अनागामिफलसाक्षात्क्रियायै प्रतिपन्नकाः। सन्ति संघे अनागामिनः।

Translation

“There are in the Sangha those practicing for the realization of the fruit of non-returning; there are in the Sangha those who are non-returners.”


Sanskrit

सन्ति संघे अर्हत्त्वफलसाक्षात्क्रियायै प्रतिपन्नकाः। सन्ति संघे अर्हन्तः।

Translation

“There are in the Sangha those practicing for the realization of the fruit of Arhatship; there are in the Sangha those who are Arhats.”


Sanskrit

यदुत चत्त्वारि पुरुषयुगानि, अष्टौ पुरुषपुद्गलाः। एष भगवतः श्रावकसंघः…

Translation

“Namely, the four pairs of men, the eight types of noble persons. This is the Blessed One’s community of disciples…”


Sanskrit

श्रद्धासंपन्नः श्रुतसंपन्नः समाधिसंपन्नः प्रज्ञासंपन्नः विमुक्तिसंपन्नः विमुक्तिज्ञानदर्शनसंपन्नः…

Translation

“…endowed with faith, endowed with learning, endowed with concentration, endowed with wisdom, endowed with liberation, endowed with the knowledge and vision of liberation…”


Sanskrit

आहवनीयः प्राहवनीयः अञ्जलीकरणीयः सामीचिकरणीयः अनुत्तरं पुण्यक्षेत्रं दर्शनीयो लोकस्य…

Translation

“…worthy of offerings, worthy of hospitality, worthy of reverential salutation, worthy of respect, the unsurpassed field of merit for the world to behold…”


Sanskrit

यदुत आर्यकान्तैः शीलैः समन्वागतो यानि शीलानि अखण्डानि अच्छिद्राणि अधृतीनि अशबलानि अकल्मषाणि भुजिष्याणि अपरामृष्टानि सुसमस्तानि विज्ञप्रशस्तानि जयसंपन्नानि अगर्हितानि विज्ञैरिति।

Translation

“…namely, he is endowed with virtues dear to the Noble Ones—virtues that are unbroken, without holes, untarnished, unspotted, pure, liberating, not clung to, perfectly complete, praised by the wise, leading to victory, and not censured by the wise.”


Sanskrit

इमानि चत्वारि स्रोतआपत्त्यङ्गानि॥

Translation

These are the four factors for stream-entry.
