Muni's Play(२२) दश तथागतबलानि — The Ten Powers of a Tathāgata

कतमानि भिक्षवो दश तथागतबलानि?
Translation
Monks, what are the ten powers of a Tathāgata?
Sanskrit
(१) तथागतः स्थानं च स्थानतो यथाभूतं प्रजानाति, अस्थानं चास्थानतो यथाभूतं प्रजानाति।
Translation
(1) The Tathāgata knows as it really is what is possible as possible, and what is impossible as impossible.
Sanskrit
(२) अतीतानागतप्रत्युत्पन्नानां कर्मधर्मसमादानानां विपाकं यथाभूतं प्रजानाति।
Translation
(2) He knows as it really is the result of the undertaking of actions (karma) in the past, future, and present.
Sanskrit
(३) परसत्त्वानां परपुद्गलानामनेकाधिमुक्तिकानां विपाकं यथाभूतं प्रजानाति।
Translation
(3) He knows as it really is the (results of) various inclinations and dispositions of other beings and other persons.

(४) अनेकलोकधातुकलोकानां नानाधातुकलोकमिति यथाभूतं प्रजानाति।
Translation
(4) He knows as it really is the world with its many and various elements (worlds/realms).

(५) परसत्त्वानामिन्द्रियाणां परापरज्ञतां यथाभूतं प्रजानाति।
Translation
(5) He knows as it really is the superior or inferior state of the faculties of other beings.

(६) सर्वत्रगामिनीं प्रतिपदं तत्रतत्रगामिनीं यथाभूतं प्रजानाति।
Translation
(6) He knows as it really is the path leading everywhere, the way leading to any destination.

(७) परसत्त्वानामिन्द्रियबलबोध्यङ्गध्यानविमोक्षसमाधिसमापत्तीनां संक्लेशव्यवदानानि यथाभूतं प्रजानाति।
Translation
(7) He knows as it really is the defilement, purification, and emergence regarding dhyānas, liberations, concentrations, and attainments of other beings.

(८) साकारं साङ्गं… अनेकविधं पूर्वनिवासमनुस्मरति। एकामपि जातिमनुस्मरति, द्वे तिस्रश्चतस्रो यावदनेकान्यपि जातिकोटीनियुतशतसहस्राण्यनुस्मरतीति विस्तरः।
Translation
(8) He recollects his many manifold past lives with their aspects and details; he recollects one birth, two, three, four… up to many hundreds of thousands of millions of births in detail.

(९) स दिव्येन चक्षुषा अतिक्रान्तमानुष्यकेण सत्त्वान् पश्यति च्यवमानानुपपद्यमानानपि। कायवाङ्मनसां सुचरितदुश्चरितैः सुगतिदुर्गतिषूपपद्यमानानीति विस्तरः।
Translation
(9) With the divine eye, surpassing that of humans, he sees beings passing away and being reborn; he sees them going to happy or unhappy destinations according to their good or bad conduct of body, speech, and mind.

(१०) आस्रवक्षयादनास्रवां चेतोविमुक्तिं प्रज्ञया यथाभूतं प्रजानाति।
Translation
(10) Through the destruction of the outflows (āsravas), he knows as it really is the outflow-less liberation of mind and liberation by wisdom.

इमानि भिक्षवो दश तथागतबलानि॥
Translation
These, O monks, are the ten powers of a Tathāgata.
