(४) द्वादशायतनानि — The Twelve Sense-bases
Sanskrit
तत्र भिक्षवः कतमानि द्वादशायतनानि ?
Translation
In that regard, monks, what are the twelve sense-bases?
Sanskrit
यदुत चक्षुरध्यात्मिकमायतनम्। रूपं बाह्यमायतनम्।
Translation
That is: the eye as the internal base; form as the external base.
Sanskrit
श्रोत्रमध्यात्मिकमायतनम्। शब्दो बाह्यमायतनम्।
Translation
The ear as the internal base; sound as the external base.
Sanskrit
घ्राणमध्यात्मिकमायतनम्। गन्धो बाह्यमायतनम्।
Translation
The nose as the internal base; odor as the external base.
Sanskrit
जिह्वा अध्यात्मिकमायतनम्। रसो बाह्यमायतनम्।
Translation
The tongue as the internal base; taste as the external base.
Sanskrit
कायोऽध्यात्मिकमायतनम्। स्पर्शो बाह्यमायतनम्।
Translation
The body as the internal base; touch as the external base.
Sanskrit
मन अध्यात्मिकमायतनम्। धर्मो बाह्यमायतनम्।
Translation
The mind as the internal base; mental objects as the external base.
Sanskrit
इमानि भिक्षव उच्यन्ते द्वादशायतनानि॥
Translation
These, monks, are called the twelve sense-bases.
