Translation

From the Tamas aspect of these five elements, the quintuplicated (Panchikrita) elements are formed. How is this quintuplication done? This is done by dividing each of the five gross elements into two halves; one half is kept aside, and the other half is divided into four equal parts, which are then mixed with the halves of the other four elements. From these quintuplicated elements, the gross body is formed, thus establishing the unity between the individual microcosm (Pinda) and the cosmic macrocosm (Brahmanda).

Word-for-Word

eteṣāṃ pañca-tattvānāṃ tāmasa-aṃśāt (from the Tamas aspect of these five elements) pañcīkṛta-pañca-tattvāni bhavanti (quintuplicated elements arise). pañcīkaraṇaṃ katham iti cet (If it is asked, how is quintuplication done?); eteṣāṃ pañca-mahābhūtānāṃ (of these five great elements) ekam-ekam bhūtaṃ dvidhā vibhajya (dividing each element into two); ekam-ekam-ardhaṃ pṛthak (one half each separately) tūṣṇīṃ vyavasthāpya (keeping aside); aparam-aparam-ardhaṃ caturdhā vibhajya (dividing the other half into four parts); sva-ardham-anyeṣu ardheṣu (one’s own half in the other halves) sva-bhāga-catuṣṭaya-saṃyojanaṃ kāryam (joining of the four parts should be done). tadā pañcīkaraṇaṃ bhavati (then quintuplication occurs). etebhyaḥ (from these) sthūla-śarīraṃ bhavati (the gross body is formed). evaṃ piṇḍa-brahmāṇḍayoḥ-aikyaṃ sambhūtam (thus unity of microcosm and macrocosm is established).
