Vedantasara - Verse 53

Sanskrit

अनया आवृतस्यात्मनः कर्तृत्वभोक्तृत्वसुखित्वदुःखित्वादिसंसारसम्भावनापि भवति यथा स्वाज्ञानेनावृतायां रज्ज्वां सर्पत्वसम्भावना

Swami Nikhilananda's Translation

The Self covered by this (concealing power of ignorance may become subject to samsara (relative existence) characterised by one’s feeling as agent, the experiencing subject, happy, miserable, etc., just as a rope may become a snake due to the concealing power of one’s own ignorance.
