प्रथमं दर्शनम् (The First Vision: The Cycle of Nations)

This chapter explores the rise and fall of civilizations and the necessity of human effort.

इन्द्रो विश्वस्येशानः ॥ १ ॥

Translation

Indra is the Lord and ruler of the entire universe.


Sutra 2

तस्य शक्तिः संसारं चक्रवन्नीचैरुच्चैर्भ्रामयति ॥ २ ॥

Translation

His Power rotates the world like a wheel, moving it downwards and upwards.


Sutra 3

ततो देशानामुन्नत्यवनती पर्यायातः ॥ ३ ॥

Translation

Consequently, the rise and fall of nations occur in cycles.


Sutra 4

विज्ञानस्याभिवृद्धिरुन्नतिः ॥ ४ ॥

Translation

The growth and expansion of consciousness/knowledge is “Rise.”


Sutra 5

क्षयोऽवनतिः ॥ ५ ॥

Translation

The decline or decay of that consciousness is “Fall.”

देशैर्जातयो व्याख्याताः ॥ ६ ॥

Translation

By the term “nations,” different races and peoples are also explained.

Human effort () is the direct cause of a nation’s rise.

The necessity of human effort is absolute and powerful.

तपो वार्ता चेति पौरुषं द्वेधा ॥ ९ ॥

Translation

Human effort is two-fold: Spiritual Intensity () and Material Science/Economy ().

सन्ततमिन्द्रस्य स्मरणं तपः ॥ १० ॥

Translation

Constant remembrance of the Supreme Lord (Indra) is Tapas.


Sutra 11

Sanskrit Text

वाणिज्यादय उपायाः सर्वे वार्ता ॥ ११ ॥

Translation

Commerce, industry, and all such worldly means constitute Vārtā.


Sutra 12

Sanskrit Text

सङ्घस्यैकमत्ये तस्या एव प्रथममुपस्थितिः ॥ १२ ॥

Translation

When there is unanimity (unity of purpose) within the community (Saṅgha), Material Prosperity (Vārtā) is the first to manifest.


Sutra 13

अन्यथा तपः शरणम् ॥ १३ ॥

Translation

Otherwise, Spiritual Intensity (Tapas) is the only refuge.


Sutra 14

सङ्घस्य दुर्बलत्वे च ॥ १४ ॥

Translation

This is especially true when the community is weak.

तपसा वीर्यमाध्यात्मिकं वर्धेत ॥ १५ ॥

Through Tapas, spiritual potency and inner strength increase.


Sutra 16

By that spiritual strength, calamities are averted.


Sutra 17

आवश्यकस्य च जयः ॥ १७ ॥

Translation

And the victory of what is essential is secured.

वार्ताय सम्पदाधिभौतिकी वर्धते ॥ १८ ॥

Translation

Through Vārtā, material and physical wealth increases.


Sutra 19

तेनापदो निवारणम् ॥ १९ ॥

Translation

By that material strength, calamities are also averted.


Sutra 20

आवश्यकस्य च जयः ॥ २० ॥

Translation

And the victory of what is essential is secured.


द्वितीयं दर्शनम् (The Second Vision: The Metaphysics of Experience)

This chapter explains the primordial relationship between the Seer () and the Seen ().

Translation

Light () and Essence () were the two prior elements of the world.

These two are Indra (the Seer) and Soma (the Enjoyed).

Translation

They are essentially inseparable.

येनानुभवति स इन्द्रः ॥ ४ ॥

Translation

That by which one experiences is Indra.

Translation

That which is experienced is Soma.

अनुभूयमानं तेज एव रसो भवति ॥ ६ ॥

Translation

Light itself, when being experienced, takes the form of Essence (Rasa).

Translation

Therefore, Soma is the very activity/manifestation of Indra.

अस्मिन्ननुभवे तृतीयोऽहङ्कर्ता सम्पद्यते ॥ ८ ॥

Translation

In this act of experience, a third factor—the Ego ()—emerges.

That [conditioned ego] is what is commonly called the Soul/Self.

It possesses individuality (differentiation).

Before the experience of Rasa, Indra and Soma do not exist as two distinct things.

Translation

That [unified state] alone is the true Existence of Reality.


Sutra 14

सा सृष्टेः प्रागवस्था ॥ १४ ॥

That is the state prior to the beginning of creation.

रसानुभवः सृष्टेरारम्भकः ॥ १५ ॥

Translation

The experience of Rasa (the split into Subject and Object) is the starter of creation.

तदैव त्रिपुटीनिष्पत्तिः ॥ १६ ॥

Translation

At that moment (of experience), the triad (Tripuṭī) is accomplished.

In that context, the Soul (at the individual/ego level) is called Vaiśvānara.

This is the First Creation (The creation of the Experiencer).


तृतीयं दर्शनम्: द्वितीयसृष्टिः

The Evolution of the Five Elements: The Second Creation

This chapter describes a unique Vedic cosmogony where the physical elements condense out of the “essence” of consciousness.

अनुभूतिपाके विवृतो रसोऽन्तरिक्षम् ॥ १ ॥

Translation

The essence (Rasa) expanded by the ripening of experience becomes the Interspace (Antarikṣa).


Sutra 2

तस्य तत्त्वं सूक्ष्मा आपः ॥ २ ॥

Translation

Its fundamental reality is subtle Waters (Sūkṣmā Āpaḥ).


Sutra 3

आत्मा तेजसा ताः पुनरन्वभूत् ॥ ३ ॥

Translation

The Self experienced those subtle waters again through Light (Tejas).


Sutra 4

तत्र क्रियायां वेपनाद्वायुजातः ॥ ४ ॥

Translation

From the vibration/quivering within that activity, Air (Vāyu) was born.


Sutra 5

वायुयोगात्तेज उष्णमासीत् ॥ ५ ॥

Translation

By association with Air, Light turned into Heat.


Sutra 6

सोऽग्निः ॥ ६ ॥

Translation

That [heat] is Fire (Agni).


Sutra 7

तस्य भौतिकं रूपं वायुः ॥ ७ ॥

Translation

Its physical vehicle (or form) is Air.

प्रकाशस्तेजस आवेशात् ॥ ८ ॥

Translation

Illumination comes from the entry of the primordial Light (Tejas).


Sutra 9

तत्र तत्र पाकातिशयात्सोऽग्निरनेकसूर्यमण्डलाकृतिरासीत् ॥ ९ ॥

Translation

Due to the intensity of ripening (pāka) in various places, that Fire took the form (Ākr̥ti) of many solar systems (orbs).


Sutra 10

अग्निपाकादन्तरिक्षे जातः स्वेद एव स्थूला आपः ॥ १० ॥

Translation

The “sweat” born in the interspace due to the ripening of Fire is gross Water.


Sutra 11

पक्वा आपो घनीभूता पृथिवी ॥ ११ ॥

Translation

Ripened waters, becoming solidified, are the Earth (Pṛthivī).


Sutra 12

अन्तरिक्षं वायुर्अग्निर्आपः पृथिवी च पञ्चमहाभूतानि ॥ १२ ॥

Translation

Thus, Interspace, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth are the Five Great Elements.


Sutra 13

पृथिव्याः पितामहोऽग्निः पुनः पृथिव्याः पुत्र आसीत् ॥ १३ ॥

Translation

Fire, the “grandfather” of Earth, became the “son” of Earth again (as terrestrial fire).

एवं त्रीणि दाहकानि तेजांसि ॥ १४ ॥

Translation

Thus, there are three types of “burning” or illuminating lights (Tejas).

आदौ वायुमविष्कृतमेकम् ॥ १५ ॥

The first is that which is manifested in the air (the atmosphere).

सूर्यमण्डलं द्वितीयम् ॥ १६ ॥

The second is the Solar Orb (the Sun).


Sutra 17

पार्थिवं तृतीयम् ॥ १७ ॥

The third is the terrestrial (earthly) fire.


Sutra 18

आदिमान्तिमयोस्तत्र अनन्धनकृतं ज्वलनम् ॥ १८ ॥

Translation

Among these, the blazing of the first and the [second] is produced without terrestrial fuel.

आदिमस्य विद्युदित्यसाधारणं नाम ॥ १९ ॥

Translation

The unique, extraordinary name of the first one (the atmospheric light) is Lightning.


Sutra 20

Translation

This is the Second Creation (The creation of the Material Universe).


चतुर्थं दर्शनम्: तृतीयसृष्टिः

Planetary Systems and Cosmic Governance: The Third Creation

This vision moves from general elements to specific planetary bodies and the “Deities” that represent their consciousness.

सूर्य रश्मिपाकाद्वातादीनि भूतान्यन्तरिक्षे तत्र तत्र स्थूलपिण्डान्यभवन् ॥ १ ॥

Translation

Through the ripening effect of solar rays, elements in the interspace formed gross planetary bodies.

तानि भूम्यङ्गारकादिगोलानि ॥ २ ॥

Translation

These are the globes like Earth (Bhūmi), Mars (Aṅgāraka), and others.


Sutra 3

पुनः पाकाद्गोलाण्यभितः सूक्ष्मापां लोकाः प्रादुरभवन् ॥ ३ ॥

Translation

From further ripening, subtle “Watery Worlds” appeared surrounding these globes.


Sutra 4

अन्तरिक्षस्य विजृम्भमाणानि शरीराणि तानि ॥ ४ ॥

Translation

Those are the “bodies” or spheres manifesting from the Interspace.


Sutra 5

सूर्यादीनां विशादात्मा ॥ ५ ॥

Translation

There is a “Vast Soul” inhabiting the Sun and other bodies.


Sutra 6

सूर्यमाविशन्नुत्तम उच्यते ॥ ६ ॥

Translation

That which enters/pervades the Sun is called Uttama (Supreme).


Sutra 7

भूमिम् प्रथमः ॥ ७ ॥

Translation

[The one entering] the Earth [is called] the Primary (Prathama).


Sutra 8

अपां लोकम् मध्यमः ॥ ८ ॥

Translation

[The one entering] the realm of the [subtle] waters is the Middle (Madhyama).


Sutra 9

वैश्वानरनाम्ना च प्रथमस्य व्यवहारः ॥ ९ ॥

Translation

And the Primary [terrestrial governor] is designated by the name Vaiśvānara.


Sutra 10

इन्द्रनाम्ना च मध्यमस्य ॥ १० ॥

Translation

And [the designation] of the Middle [subtle governor] is by the name Indra.


Sutra 11

सूर्य इति शरीरनाम्ना चोत्तमस्य ॥ ११ ॥

Translation

And the Supreme [solar governor] is designated as Sūrya, after the name of the [celestial] body.


Sutra 12

मित्रवरुणार्यमणा नामभिरुत्तममध्यमप्रथमाः ॥ १२ ॥

Translation

These [governing souls] are named Mitra (Highest/Solar), Varuṇa (Middle/Watery), and Aryaman (Primary/Terrestrial).

ब्रह्मविष्णुहरुद्राः ॥ १३ ॥

Translation

These are (functionally) Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra.


Sutra 14

This is the Third Creation (The creation of Cosmic Order). |

पञ्चमं दर्शनम् (The Fifth Vision: The Origin of Life)

This chapter describes the Fourth Creation: the birth of humanity and the biological world.

भूमिर्नारीव सूर्यात्पुंस इव गर्भं दधौ ॥ १ ॥

Translation

The Earth, like a woman, received the embryo from the Sun, who is like a man.

Translation

From that [union], a pair was born.


Sutra 3

तावाद्यौ नारीनरौ ॥ ३ ॥

Translation

They were the first female and male.


Sutra 4

तयोः पुरुषं मनुमाहुः ॥ ४ ॥

Translation

Of those two, the male is called Manu.

सम्प्रति तादृशाश्चत्वारो मनवो गताः ॥ ५ ॥

So far, four such Manus have passed away.


Sutra 6

Now is the time of the Fifth Manu.

Therefore, five types of beings (races/species) are seen on Earth.

Translation

The Blue/Black, the Dark, the Yellow, the Red, and the White.

Translation

There is a specific “fertile season” for the Earth.


Sutra 10

तदा ततः प्रजोत्पत्तिः ॥ १० ॥

At that time, the birth of beings occurred from her.

एकैकं ऋतुमेकैंकं मन्वन्तरमाहुः ॥ ११ ॥

Each and every [such biological] season [of the Earth] is called a Manvantara.


Sutra 12

इतरे प्राणिनो मनुष्यवत्सूर्यरश्मिबीजेभ्यः पृथिव्यां जायन्ते ॥ १२ ॥

Translation

Other living beings, like humans, are born on Earth from the “seeds” of solar rays.

सर्वत्राद्यप्राणिसर्गः जङ्गमे स्थावरेषु सूर्यात् ॥ १३ ॥

Translation

Everywhere, the first creation of life—moving and unmoving—is from the Sun.


Sutra 14

अनन्तरं प्राणिनां सर्गः प्राणिभ्यः ॥ १४ ॥

Translation

Subsequently, the creation of beings proceeds from other beings.

तस्मादस्माकमाद्यः पिता सूर्यः ॥ १५ ॥

Translation

Therefore, our original father is the Sun.


Sutra 16

आद्या माता पृथिवी ॥ १६ ॥

Our original mother is the Earth.

This is the Fourth Creation.


षष्ठं दर्शनम् (The Sixth Vision: The Philosophy of Power)

This chapter explores the dynamics of the universe as an interplay between Consciousness-Power (Cit-Shakti) and Inert-Power (Jada-Shakti).

सङ्कुचितस्याभिवृद्धिः सर्गस्य तत्त्वम् ॥ १ ॥

Translation

The expansion of what was contracted is the principle of Creation.


Sutra 2

अभिवृद्धस्य सङ्कोचः प्रलयस्य ॥ २ ॥

Translation

The contraction of what was expanded is the principle of Dissolution.


Sutra 3

सर्गः ईश्वरस्येष्टं वृत्तम् ॥ ३ ॥

Translation

Creation is the desired activity/movement of Ishvara.


Sutra 4

प्रलयः प्रवृत्तिधर्मः ॥ ४ ॥

Translation

Dissolution is a natural, inherent tendency (like gravity).


Sutra 5

यथा भोगो जीवस्येष्टं वृत्तम् ॥ ५ ॥

Translation

Just as enjoyment is the desired activity of the individual soul.


Sutra 6

निद्रा प्रवृत्तिधर्मः ॥ ६ ॥

Translation

Sleep is its natural, inherent tendency.


Sutra 7

अविभक्तस्य वस्तुनः स्वभावः प्रकृतिः ॥ ७ ॥

The nature of the undifferentiated Reality is called Prakriti.

विभक्ते सा विभक्ता ॥ ८ ॥

Translation

When differentiation occurs, she [Prakriti] also becomes divided.

चित्शक्तिर्जडशक्तिश्चेति ॥ ९ ॥

Differentiated as Consciousness-Power and Inert-Power (Matter).


Sutra 10

आदेरहङ्कर्तुरिच्छा ईश्वरस्येत्युच्यते ॥ १० ॥

Translation

The will of the Primordial Ego-Principle is called “Ishvara.”


Sutra 11

स्वस्येष्टं प्रकृतेः साहाय्येन साधयति ॥ ११ ॥

Translation

He achieves His desire with the help of Nature (Prakriti).


Sutra 12

जडशक्तिमुलः संसारः ॥ १२ ॥

Translation

The worldly cycle (Samsara) is rooted in Inert/Material Power.


Sutra 13

Sanskrit Text

तत्रैव प्रायो सर्वजीवानां यत्नः ॥ १३ ॥

Translation

Most beings direct their efforts only toward that material power.


Sutra 14

Sanskrit Text

चित्शक्तिमुलः सिद्धिः ॥ १४ ॥

Translation

Spiritual Perfection (Siddhi) is rooted in Consciousness-Power.


Sutra 15

Sanskrit Text

तां प्राप्तुं योगिनो यतन्ते ॥ १५ ॥

Translation

Yogis strive to attain that [Consciousness-Power].


Sutra 16

Sanskrit Text

उभयशक्त्युपरमो निर्वाणं बुद्धस्य ॥ १६ ॥

Translation

The cessation of both powers is the Nirvana of the Buddha.


Sutra 17

अपवर्गो गौतमस्य ॥ १७ ॥

Translation

That is the Apavarga of Gautama (Nyaya school).


Sutra 18

Sanskrit Text

मोक्षः साङ्ख्यानाम् ॥ १८ ॥

Translation

That is the Moksha of the Samkhyas.


Sutra 19

निःश्रेयसं कणादस्य ॥ १९ ॥

Translation

That is the Nishreyasa of Kanada (Vaisheshika school).


Sutra 20

चित्शक्तिमुलः सम्पत् बादरायणस्य ॥ २० ॥

Translation

The “Wealth” rooted in Consciousness-Power is the goal of Badarayana (Vedanta).


Sutra 21

स एव उत्तमः पुरुषार्थ इति वासिष्ठः ॥ २१ ॥

Translation

Vasistha (Ganapati Muni) declares that this [Vedantic Fullness] alone is the highest goal.


Sutra 22

उपरमो मोक्षश्चेदीश्वरस्य सर्गो बन्धः स्यात् ॥ २२ ॥

Translation

If liberation were mere cessation, then Ishvara’s act of creation would be a state of bondage.


Sutra 23

तदेवं लोकस्य ध्येयं चित्शक्त्युत्कर्षः ॥ २३ ॥

Translation

Therefore, the goal of the world is the elevation (expansion) of Consciousness-Power.


Sutra 24

तदेवैश्वरः साधयितुं प्रवर्तते ॥ २४ ॥

Translation

That is precisely what Ishvara (the Divine Will) sets out to accomplish.


Sutra 25

तत्र जडशक्त्युत्कर्षपोषकाणां भावानां संहार आवश्यकः ॥ २५ ॥

Translation

In that process, the destruction of those forces that nourish the growth of Inert Power is necessary.


Sutra 26

स एवेन्द्रस्य वृत्रवधः ॥ २६ ॥

Translation

That [destruction of inertia] is what is called “Indra’s Slaying of Vritra.”

सप्तमं दर्शनम्: परिणामवाद-विमर्शः

The Seventh Vision: Critique of the Theory of Evolution/Transformation

This chapter examines whether the world is always moving toward a “better” state (Evolution) or if it is a neutral cycle of change.

यथोत्तरः श्रेयान् प्रवृत्तेः परिणाम इत्येके ॥ १ ॥

Translation

Some say that the evolution/transformation of Nature is such that each succeeding state is superior to the previous.

न व्यापकं सूत्रमेतदिति वासिष्ठः ॥ २ ॥

Translation

Vasistha (Ganapati Muni) says this is not a universally applicable rule.


Sutra 3

क्षीरादौ विपर्यय दर्शनात् ॥ ३ ॥

Translation

Because in cases like milk [turning to curd], we see a reversal (perceived decline of state).


Sutra 4

यौवनादनन्तरं वार्धक्यस्य च दर्शनात् ॥ ४ ॥

Translation

And because after youth, we clearly observe the decline of old age.


Sutra 5

चित्शक्तिपरिणामाभिप्रायः स वाद इति चेत् ॥ ५ ॥

Translation

If you argue that the “Evolution Theory” only refers to the transformation of Consciousness-Power…


Sutra 6

निर्बीजादुत्पत्तिप्राप्त्यसम्भवादनुदाहरणो वादः ॥ ६ ॥

Translation

…then the argument lacks examples, as nothing arises from a “seedless” state.


Sutra 7

उत्कृटं जन्मान्तर इति चेदप्रत्यक्षो विषयः ॥ ७ ॥

Translation

If you claim the “superior” state happens in another birth, it becomes a non-perceivable (unverifiable) subject.

तस्माद्यथा विषयमुत्कर्षोऽपकर्षश्च परिणामे ॥ ८ ॥

Translation

Therefore, in transformation, there is both “Rise” (Utkarṣa) and “Fall” (Apakarṣa), depending on the object.


Sutra 9

ईश्वरस्यैच्छिकस्त्वुत्कर्ष एव नित्यः ॥ ९ ॥

Translation

However, in Ishvara, because of His Will, there is only a constant, eternal Rise.


Sutra 10

Sanskrit Text

संसारिण उभयं प्रवृत्तेरधीनत्वात्तस्य ॥ १० ॥

Translation

For the transmigrating soul, both rise and fall occur because it is subject to the flux of Nature (Pravṛtti).


Sutra 11

Sanskrit Text

सिद्धानामीश्वरवत् ॥ ११ ॥

Translation

For the Perfected Beings (Siddhas), it is like Ishvara (only Rise).
