क्रियाशक्तिमीमांसा (Kriyāśakti-mīmāṃsā)

प्रथमः खण्डः (Section One: The Nature of Power)

Sutra 1

Sanskrit Text

यया प्राणिति परमः सा तस्य क्रियाशक्तिः ॥

Translation

That by which the Supreme breathes (lives/acts) is His Kriyā-śakti (Power of Action).


Sutra 2

Sanskrit Text

तस्या एव बलाख्या ॥

Translation

That (power) itself is called Bala (Strength/Force).


Sutra 3

Sanskrit Text

सा व्याप्नोति भुवनं तपनशक्तिरिव सूर्यस्य ॥

Translation

It pervades the world just as the burning power of the sun pervades (the solar system).


Sutra 4

Sanskrit Text

पचति च ॥

Translation

And it “ripens” (transforms/cooks) all things.


Sutra 5

Sanskrit Text

तामेव विद्युच्छक्तिमाहुः ॥

Translation

That (power) itself they call Vidyut-śakti (Electric Power).


Sutra 6

Sanskrit Text

कालयतीति सा काली ॥

Translation

Because she impels/measures time (kālayati), she is Kālī.


Sutra 7

Sanskrit Text

तस्याः कालनमव्यक्तस्वरद्वारा ॥

Translation

Her impelling of time is through the medium of the Unmanifest Sound (Avyakta-swara).


Sutra 8

Sanskrit Text

पुमाख्याया कालः ॥

Translation

When referred to in the masculine, it is Kāla (Time).


Sutra 9

Sanskrit Text

तारयतीति तारा ॥

Translation

Because she carries across (saves), she is Tārā.


Sutra 10

Sanskrit Text

तस्याः तारणमव्यक्तस्वरद्वारा ॥

Translation

Her saving action is (also) through the medium of the Unmanifest Sound.


Sutra 11

Sanskrit Text

पुमाख्याया तारः ॥

Translation

When referred to in the masculine, it is Tāra.


Sutra 12

Sanskrit Text

तारः प्रणव इत्यनर्थान्तरम् ॥

Translation

“Tāra” and “Pranava” (the syllable OM) are not different in meaning.


Sutra 13

Sanskrit Text

संहरतीति प्रचण्डचण्डी ॥

Translation

Because she withdraws/destroys, she is the fierce Pracaṇḍacaṇḍī.


Sutra 14

Sanskrit Text

तस्याः संहरणमव्यक्तज्योतिर्द्वारा ॥

Translation

Her withdrawal (destruction) is through the medium of the Unmanifest Light (Avyakta-jyotis).


Sutra 15

Sanskrit Text

नपुंसकाख्याया वज्रम् ॥

Translation

When referred to in the neuter, it is the Vajra (the Thunderbolt/Indestructible).


Sutra 16

Sanskrit Text

शची शचधात्वर्थानुगमात् ॥

Translation

She is called Śacī following the meaning of the verbal root śac (to be able/to speak).



द्वितीयः खण्डः (Section Two: Dialectical Inquiry)

Sutra 1

Sanskrit Text

प्राणनं क्रियाशक्तेरन्यत्र चेत् क्रियायाः क्रियान्तरमापद्येत ॥ आक्षेपः ॥

Translation

Objection: If breathing (acting) is different from the Power of Action, it would lead to an infinite regress of actions within actions.


Sutra 2

Sanskrit Text

अनन्यच्चेत् क्रियाशक्तेस्तत्र करणत्वानुपपत्तिः ॥

Translation

(Furthermore), if it is not different from the Power of Action, then it cannot logically be the instrument of action.


Sutra 3

Sanskrit Text

शक्तेः क्रियातो भेदाददोषः ॥ समाधानम् ॥

Translation

Solution: There is no fault, because there is a (functional) distinction between the Power (Śakti) and the Action (Kriyā).


Sutra 4

Sanskrit Text

विद्युच्छक्तिस्तेजोविशेषश्चेच्छक्तिर्द्रव्यं स्यात् ॥ आक्षेपः ॥

Translation

Objection: If Electric Power is a specific type of Radiance (Tejas), then “Power” would have to be considered a physical substance (Dravya).


Sutra 5

Sanskrit Text

तेजोविशेषशक्तिश्चेत्परमस्य न स्यात् ॥

Translation

And if it is merely a power of a specific radiance, then it would not belong to the (Absolute) Supreme.


Sutra 6

Sanskrit Text

सा तेजोविशेषोपाधिनिरपेक्षैवात्रोदितेति न दोषः ॥ समाधानम् ॥

Translation

Solution: There is no fault, as it is declared here as independent of the adjunct of specific radiance.


Sutra 7

Sanskrit Text

शक्तिः कालश्चेद् द्रव्यं स्यात् ॥ आक्षेपः ॥

Translation

Objection: If Power is Time, then it would be a substance.


Sutra 8

Sanskrit Text

कालो द्रव्यमिति वैशेषिकसिद्धान्तस्तु रतोमात्रमिति नैतच्चोद्यं नैतच्चोद्यम् ॥ समाधानम् ॥

Translation

Solution: The Vaiśeṣika doctrine that “Time is a substance” is a mere convention/opinion; therefore, this objection is not valid. This objection is not valid.
