Sutra 1

Devanagari

सुन्दरीं व्याख्यास्यामः ।। 1।।

Transliteration

  1. Sundarīṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ.

Translation

We shall now explain Sundari.

Sutra 2

Devanagari

तृतीया सा दशसु महाविद्यासु ।। 2।।

Transliteration

  1. Tṛtīyā sā daśasu mahāvidyāsu.

Translation

She is the third among the ten Mahavidyas (Great Wisdom Goddesses).

Sutra 3

Devanagari

सुन्दर्येव त्रिपुरसुन्दर्युच्यते ।। 3।।

Transliteration

  1. Sundaryeva tripurasundaryucyate.

Translation

Sundari alone is called Tripura Sundari.

Sutra 4

Devanagari

ललिता च ।। 4।।

Transliteration

  1. Lalitā ca.

Translation

And Lalita.

Sutra 5

Devanagari

राजराजेश्वरीति ।। 5।।

Transliteration

  1. Rājarājeśvarīti.

Translation

And Rajarajeshwari.

Sutra 6

Devanagari

चिच्छक्तिः सुन्दरी ।। 6।।

Transliteration

  1. Cicchaktiḥ sundarī.

Translation

Sundari is the Power of Consciousness (Chichakti).

Sutra 7

Devanagari

विश्वतीता पराऽम्बिकाऽधिदैवतम् ।। 7।।

Transliteration

  1. Viśvatītā parā’mbikā’dhidaivatam.

Translation

Transcending the universe, she is the Supreme Mother (Parambika), the presiding Deity.

Sutra 8

Devanagari

शब्दशक्तौ ज्ञानच्छायाश्लेषः ।। 8।।

Transliteration

  1. Śabdaśaktau jñānacchāyāśleṣaḥ.

Translation

In the power of the Word (Sound), there is an embrace of the shadow of Knowledge.

Sutra 9

Devanagari

अतो विज्ञानमयी च सा ।। 9।।

Transliteration

  1. Ato vijñānamayī ca sā.

Translation

Therefore, She is also composed of Higher Wisdom (Vijnanamayi).

Sutra 10

Devanagari

शुद्धं ज्ञानमनुभवात्मकमन्यत् ।। 10।।

Transliteration

  1. Śuddhaṃ jñānam-anubhavātmakam-anyat.

Translation

Pure Knowledge, consisting of direct experience, is distinct.

Sutra 11

Devanagari

तस्मान्नातिप्रसङ्गः।। 11।।

Transliteration

  1. Tasmānnātiprasangaḥ.

Translation

Therefore, there is no over-extension.

Sutra 12

Devanagari

धर्मिणो ज्ञानस्य धर्मो ज्ञानमियमित्येव ।। 12।।

Transliteration

  1. Dharmiṇo jñānasya dharmo jñānamiyamityeva.

Translation

The attribute of the “Possessor of Knowledge” is the rule that “this is knowledge.”

Sutra 13

Devanagari

दीपप्रभयोस्तेजस्त्वमिवोभयोर्ज्ञानत्वम् ।। 13।।

Transliteration

  1. Dīpaprabhayoste jastvam-ivobhayor-jñānatvam.

Translation

Just as the nature of light is common to both the lamp and its glow, “knowledge-ness” is common to both (the subject and the attribute).

Sutra 14

Devanagari

सुतरामभेद इत्यन्ये ।। 14।।

Transliteration

  1. Sutarām-abheda ityanye.

Translation

Others say there is absolute non-difference between them.

Sutra 15

Devanagari

अधिष्ठानत्वेन व्यवहारे तदेव धर्मि ।। 15।।

Transliteration

  1. Adhiṣṭhānatvena vyavahāre tadeva dharmi.

Translation

In worldly transaction, that which serves as the substratum is the “Possessor of Attribute” (Dharmi).

Sutra 16

Devanagari

शक्तित्वेन धर्मः ।। 16।।

Transliteration

  1. Śaktitvena dharmaḥ.

Translation

In its capacity as Power (Shakti), it is the “Attribute” (Dharma).

Sutra 17

Devanagari

राहोः शिर इतिवद्वा भेदव्यवहारः ।। 17।।

Transliteration

  1. Rāhoḥ śira itivadvā bhedavyavahāraḥ.

Translation

The distinction in usage is like saying “the head of Rahu” (where Rahu is only a head, yet we distinguish the two in speech).

Sutra 18

Devanagari

अन्तरशाखाभेदेनेति वासिष्ठः ।। 18।।

Transliteration

  1. Antaraśākhābhedeneti vāsiṣṭhaḥ.

Translation

Vasistha (Ganapati Muni) says the distinction is due to the different internal branches (of manifestation).

Sutra 19

Devanagari

सेयं भूतान्याविश्य व्यष्टिशक्तिर्भवति ।। 19।।

Transliteration

  1. Seyaṃ bhūtānyāviśya vyaṣṭiśaktir-bhavati.

Translation

This very Consciousness, entering into beings, becomes the individual power (Vyashti-shakti).

Sutra 20

Devanagari

तारतम्यमुपाधिभेदात् ।। 20।।

Transliteration

  1. Tāratamyam-upādhibhedāt.

Translation

The variation (in power) is due to the differences in the limiting adjuncts (Upadhis).

Sutra 21

Devanagari

अस्याः संविदोऽध्यात्मं त्रीणि पुराणि ।। 21।।

Transliteration

  1. Asyāḥ saṃvido’dhyātmaṃ trīṇi purāṇi.

Translation

This Consciousness has three “cities” (Puras) within the individual (spiritually).

Sutra 22

Devanagari

प्रथमं चक्षुर्जागरितस्थानम् ।। 22।।

Transliteration

  1. Prathamaṃ cakṣur-jāgaritasthānam.

Translation

The first is the eye, the place of the waking state.

Sutra 23

Devanagari

फालस्थेन्द्रधनुप्रभेति नामनी अत्र भवतः ।। 23।।

Transliteration

  1. Phālasthendradhanuprabheti nāmanī atra bhavataḥ.

Translation

Here, Her names are Phalastha (Residing in the forehead) and Indradhanu-prabha (Glowing like a rainbow).

Sutra 24

Devanagari

द्वितीयं शिरस्तैजसस्थानम् ।। 24।।

Transliteration

  1. Dvitiyaṃ śirastaijasasthānam.

Translation

The second is the head, the place of the dreaming state (Taijasa).

Sutra 25

Devanagari

विशुद्धचक्रमित्येव ।। 25।।

Transliteration

  1. Viśuddhacakramityeva.

Translation

This is indeed the Vishuddha Chakra.

Sutra 26

Devanagari

शङ्खिन्या उभयसम्बद्धत्वादेषोक्तिर्विकल्पस्य ।। 26।।

Transliteration

  1. Śaṅkhinyā ubhayasambaddhatvādeṣoktir-vikalpasya.

Translation

Because the Shankhini (nadi) is connected to both, this is said regarding the mental faculty (vikalpa)..

Sutra 27

Devanagari

शिरःस्थिता चन्द्रनिभेति नामनी अत्र भवतः ।। 27।।

Transliteration

  1. Śiraḥsthitā candranibheti nāmanī atra bhavataḥ.

Translation

Here, Her names are Shirahasthita (Abiding in the head) and Chandranibha (Moon-like).

Sutra 28

Devanagari

तृतीयं हृदयं प्राज्ञस्थानम् ।। 28।।

Transliteration

  1. Tṛtīyaṃ hṛdayaṃ prājñasthānam.

Translation

The third is the heart, the place of deep sleep (Prajna).

Sutra 29

Devanagari

हृदयस्था रविप्रख्येति नामनी अत्र भवतः ।। 29।।

Transliteration

  1. Hṛdayasthā raviprakhyeti nāmanī atra bhavataḥ.

Translation

Here, Her names are Hridayastha (Abiding in the heart) and Raviprakhya (Sun-like).

Sutra 30

Devanagari

उपनिषदि चायमावसथ इति त्रिरभ्यस्तं स्थानत्रयप्रदर्शनाय ।। 30।।

Transliteration

  1. Upaniṣadi cāyamāvasatha iti trir-abhyastaṃ sthānatrayapradarśanāya.

Translation

In the Upanishad, the word “Abode” (Avasatha) is repeated thrice to indicate these three states.

Sutra 31

Devanagari

एवं संविदुस्त्रिपुरात्वं व्याख्यातम् ।। 31।।

Transliteration

  1. Evaṃ saṃvidustripurātvaṃ vyākhyātam.

Translation

Thus, the “Tripura-ness” (triple-city nature) of Consciousness is explained.

Sutra 32

Devanagari

इदं त्रिपुरमेव त्रिकोणमाहुः ।। 32।।

Transliteration

  1. Idaṃ tripurameva trikoṇamāhuḥ.

Translation

This “Tripura” (triple) is what they call the Triangle (Trikona).

Sutra 33

Devanagari

त्रिकोणान्तरदीपिकेति नामात्रा भवति ।। 33।।

Transliteration

  1. Trikoṇāntaradīpiketi nāmātra bhavati.

Translation

Here, Her name is Trikonantara-dipika (The Light within the Triangle).

Sutra 34

Devanagari

अथाधिलोकम् ।। 34।।

Transliteration

  1. Athādhilokam.

Translation

Now, regarding the macrocosm (Adhilokam).

Sutra 35

Devanagari

सूर्यस्य मण्डलं प्रथमं पुरम् ।। 35।।

Transliteration

  1. Sūryasya maṇḍalaṃ prathamaṃ puram.

Translation

The solar orb is the first city.

Sutra 36

Devanagari

चन्द्रस्य द्वितीयम् ।। 36।।

Transliteration

  1. Candrasya dvitiyam.

Translation

The lunar orb is the second.

Sutra 37

Devanagari

प्रुथिव्यास्त्रुतीयं ।। 37।।

Transliteration

  1. Pṛthivyāstrutīyam.

Translation

The earth is the third.

Sutra 38

Devanagari

द्वितीयमन्तरिक्षमित्येव ।। 38।।

Transliteration

  1. Dvitiyam-antarikṣamityeva.

Translation

Or, the second is the atmosphere (Antariksha).

Sutra 39

Devanagari

अथ साधारण्येन ।। 39।।

Transliteration

  1. Atha sādhāraṇyena.

Translation

Now, in a general sense:

Devanagari

परमण्डलं प्रथमं पुरम् ।। 40।।

Transliteration

  1. Paramaṇḍalaṃ prathamaṃ puram.

Translation

The Supreme Realm is the first city.

Sutra 41

Devanagari

सूर्यमण्डलं द्वितीयम् ।। 41।।

Transliteration

  1. Sūryamaṇḍalaṃ dvitiyam.

Translation

The Solar Realm is the second.

Sutra 42

Devanagari

सर्वोत्कृष्टप्रकाशत्वात् सुन्दर्येषा ।। 42।।

Transliteration

  1. Sarvotkṛṣṭaprakāśatvāt sundaryeṣā.

Translation

Because she is the most excellent Light, she is Sundari (The Beautiful).

Sutra 43

Devanagari

सुन्दरीललितेत्यनर्थान्तरम् ।। 43।।

Transliteration

  1. Sundarī-lalitetyanarthāntaram.

Translation

Sundari and Lalita are not different in meaning.

Sutra 44

Devanagari

तस्य भासा सर्वमिदं विभातीति श्रुतिरत्र भवति ।। 44।।

Transliteration

  1. Tasya bhāsā sarvam-idaṃ vibhātīti śrutir-atra bhavati.

Translation

Here the Vedic scripture applies: “By Her light, all this shines.”

Sutra 45

Devanagari

विश्वसाम्राज्यभृत्वाद्राजराजराजेश्वरी ।। 45।।

Transliteration

  1. Viśvasāmrājyabhrttvād-rājarājeśvarī.

Translation

Because she holds sovereignty over the entire universe, she is Rajarajeshwari.

Sutra 46

Devanagari

ज्ञानप्रदर्शनाय विषयज्ञाननिरूपणम् ।। 46।।

Transliteration

  1. Jñānapradarśanāya viṣayajñānanirūpaṇam.

Translation

To demonstrate Knowledge, the description of “object-knowledge” (secular/specific knowledge) is given.

Sutra 47

Devanagari

यथाऽग्निप्रदर्शनायाङ्गारनिरूपणम् ।। 47।।

Transliteration

  1. Yathā’gnipradarśanāyāṅgāranirūpaṇam.

Translation

Just as to demonstrate fire, one describes glowing embers.

Sutra 48

Devanagari

महावाक्ये प्रज्ञानशब्दस्य विषयज्ञानं वाच्योऽर्थः ।। 48।।

Transliteration

  1. Mahāvākye prajñānaśabdasya viṣayajñānaṃ vācyo’rthaḥ.

Translation

In the Great Sayings (Mahavakyas), the literal meaning of the word Prajnanam is knowledge of objects.

Sutra 49

Devanagari

शुद्धज्ञानं लक्ष्यः ।। 49।।

Transliteration

  1. Śuddhajñānaṃ lakṣyaḥ.

Translation

Pure Knowledge is the indicated/implied meaning (Lakshya).

Sutra 50

Devanagari

विषयोपरक्तं ज्ञानं विज्ञानं यत्सूक्ष्मशब्दात्मकम् ।। 50।।

Transliteration

  1. Viṣayoparaktaṃ jñānaṃ vijñānaṃ yatsūkṣmaśabdātmakam.

Translation

Knowledge colored by objects is Vijnana, which is of the nature of subtle sound.

Sutra 51

Devanagari

शुद्धं तु निर्विषयम् ।। 51।।

Transliteration

  1. Śuddhaṃ tu nirviṣayam.

Translation

But Pure Knowledge is without objects.

Sutra 52

Devanagari

क्रिया तटस्थं लक्षणं ब्रह्मणः ।। 52।।

Transliteration

  1. Kriyā taṭasthaṃ lakṣaṇaṃ brahmaṇaḥ.

Translation

Action is the accidental/marginal characteristic (Tatastha Lakshana) of Brahman.

Sutra 53

Devanagari

ज्ञानं स्वरूपलक्षणम् ।। 53।।

Transliteration

  1. Jñānaṃ svarūpalakṣaṇam.

Translation

Knowledge is the essential characteristic (Swarupa Lakshana).

Sutra 54

Devanagari

मुमुक्षुः सुन्दरीमुपासीत ।। 54।।

Transliteration

  1. Mumukṣuḥ sundarīmupāsīta.

Translation

A seeker of liberation should worship Sundari.

Sutra 55

Devanagari

सर्वज्ञत्वकामो वा ।। 55।।

Transliteration

  1. Sarvajñatvakāmo vā.

Translation

Or one who desires omniscience.

Sutra 56

Devanagari

श्रीविद्यया ।। 56।।

Transliteration

  1. Śrīvidyayā.

Translation

Through the Shri Vidya (mantra).

Sutra 57

Devanagari

सा उभयथा पञ्चदशी षोडशी चेति ।। 57।।

Transliteration

  1. Sā ubhayathā pañcadaśī ṣoḍaśī ceti.

Translation

That is of two types: the fifteen-lettered (Panchadashi) and the sixteen-lettered (Shodashi).

Sutra 58

Devanagari

ब्रह्मयोनिशान्तीन्द्रमायाभिः खभृगुब्रह्मखेन्द्रमायाभिः भृगुब्रह्मेन्द्रमायाभिश्च पञ्चदशी ।। 58।।

Transliteration

brahmayoniśāntīndramāyābhiḥ | khabhṛgubrahmakhendramāyābhiḥ | bhṛgubrahmendramāyābhiśca pañcadaśī

Translation

With (the groups of) Brahma-Yoni-Shanti-Indra-Maya; Kha-Bhrigu-Brahma-Kha-Indra-Maya; and Bhrigu-Brahma-Indra-Maya, the fifteen-lettered (Panchadashi) is formed.

Sutra 59

Devanagari

आसुरी गायत्र्येषा ।। 59।।

Transliteration

  1. Āsurī gāyatryeṣā.

Translation

This is the Asuri Gayatri.

Sutra 60

Devanagari

तन्त्राणां सारः ।। 60।।

Transliteration

  1. Tantrāṇāṃ sāraḥ.

Translation

It is the essence of the Tantras.

Sutra 61

Devanagari

रमोत्तरेयं षोडशी ।। 61।।

Transliteration

  1. Ramottareyaṃ ṣoḍaśī.

Translation

The Shodashi is that which ends with Rama (the seed Shrim).

Sutra 62

Devanagari

प्रणवमायारमापूर्वा रमामायाकामवाणी शक्तिसम्पुटिता वा ।। 62।।

Transliteration

  1. Praṇavamāyāramāpūrvā ramamāyākāmavāṇī śaktisampuṭitā vā.

Translation

It starts with Om (Pranava), Hrim (Maya), and Shrim (Rama); or it is enveloped by Shrim-Hrim-Klim-Aim (Rama-Maya-Kama-Vani).

Sutra 63

Devanagari

अक्षरसंख्यया पूर्वा ।। 63।।

Transliteration

  1. Akṣarasaṅkhyayā pūrvā.

Translation

The former is by the count of letters.

Sutra 64

Devanagari

बीजसंख्ययोत्तरा ।। 64।।

Transliteration

  1. Bījasaṅkhyayottarā.

Translation

The latter is by the count of seed-syllables (Beejas).

Sutra 65

Devanagari

एते मन्त्रास्तान्त्रिकाः ।। 65।।

Transliteration

  1. Ete mantrāstāntrikāḥ.

Translation

These mantras are of the Tantric tradition.

Sutra 66

Devanagari

एतेषां दक्षिणामूर्तिमृषिमाहुः ।। 66।।

Transliteration

  1. Eteṣāṃ dakṣiṇāmūrtimṛṣimāhuḥ.

Translation

They say Dakshinamurti is the Seer (Rishi) of these.

Sutra 67

Devanagari

पञ्चाक्षरं खण्डं बीजम् ।। 67।।

Transliteration

  1. Pañcākṣaraṃ khaṇḍaṃ bījam.

Translation

The five-lettered section is the Seed (Beeja).

Sutra 68

Devanagari

षडक्षरं शक्तिम् ।। 68।।

Transliteration

  1. Ṣaḍakṣaraṃ śaktim.

Translation

The six-lettered section is the Power (Shakti).

Sutra 69

Devanagari

चतुरक्षरं कीलकम् ।। 69।।

Transliteration

  1. Caturakṣaraṃ kīlakam.

Translation

The four-lettered section is the Pin (Kilakam).

Sutra 70

Devanagari

वाग्भवकामराजशक्त्यभिधानानि तानि खण्डानि ।। 70।।

Transliteration

  1. Vāgbhavakāmarājaśaktyabhidhānāni tāni khaṇḍāni.

Translation

These sections are named Vagbhava, Kamaraja, and Shakti.

Sutra 71

Devanagari

तैरेव द्विरावृत्तैर्न्यासः ।। 71।।

Transliteration

  1. Taireva dvirāvṛttair-nyāsaḥ.

Translation

The “Placement” (Nyasa) is done by repeating them twice.

Sutra 72

Devanagari

रक्ता चन्द्रचूडा पुण्ड्रेक्षुपाशाङ्कुशपुष्पबाणभृच्चतुर्भुजा पञ्चप्रेतासना ध्येया ।। 72।।

Transliteration

  1. Raktā candracūḍā puṇḍrekṣupāśāṅkuśapuṣpabāṇabhṛccaturbhujā pañcapretāsanā dhyeyā.

Translation

One should meditate on Her as Red, adorned with the crescent moon, four-armed, holding the sugarcane bow, the noose, the goad, and flower-arrows, seated upon the seat of five corpses (the five deities).

Sutra 73

Devanagari

करुणाद्योतकं रक्तत्वम् ।। 73।।

Transliteration

  1. Karuṇādyotakaṃ raktatvam.

Translation

Her redness symbolizes Her compassion.

Sutra 74

Devanagari

नित्यानन्दान्तःकरणद्योतकं चन्द्रभूषणम् ।। 74।।

Transliteration

  1. Nityānandāntaḥkaraṇadyotakaṃ candrabhūṣaṇam.

Translation

The moon-ornament symbolizes the internal faculty of eternal bliss.

Sutra 75

Devanagari

आयुधतत्त्वानि सहस्रनामस्तोत्रे व्याख्यातानि ।। 75।।

Transliteration

  1. Āyudhatattvāni sahasranāmastotre vyākhyātāni.

Translation

The meanings of the weapons are explained in the Lalita Sahasranama Stotram.

Sutra 76

Devanagari

‘‘अयं स शिङ्क्ते येन गौरभीवृता मिमाति मायुं ध्वसनावधिश्रिता । सा चित्तिभिर्नि हि चकार मर्त्यं विद्युद्भवन्ती प्रति वव्रिमौहत’’।। इति दीर्घतमसा दृष्ट्या वैदिक्या जगत्या विद्यया वा ।। 76।।

Transliteration

  1. ‘‘Ayaṃ sa sīṅkte yena gaurabhīvṛtā mimāti māyuṃ dhvasanāvādhiśritā। sā cittibhir-ni hi cakāra martyaṃ vidyudbhavantī prati vavrimauhat’’।। iti dīrghatamasā dṛṣṭyā vaidikyā jagatyā vidyayā vā.

Translation

(Vedic Verse): “This is that which sounds… the lightning becoming…” This is seen through the vision of the sage Dirghatamas, in the Jagati meter, or through the Vedic Vidya.

Sutra 77

Devanagari

अस्याः शुद्धमुपासनमात्मनिष्ठा ।। 77।।

Transliteration

  1. Asyāḥ śuddhamupāsanam-ātmaniṣṭhā.

Translation

The pure worship of Her is “Abidance in the Self” (Atma-nishtha).

Sutra 78

Devanagari

अहंवृत्तिमूलगवेषणात् सा सिध्येदिति भगवान् रमणः ।। 78।।

Transliteration

  1. Ahaṃvṛttimūlagaveṣaṇāt sā sidhyediti bhagavān ramaṇaḥ.

Translation

The Lord Ramana (Maharshi) says: “That is accomplished by seeking the source of the ‘I-thought’.”

Sutra 79

Devanagari

नित्यमात्मज्ञप्त्या वेति वासिष्ठः ।। 79।।

Transliteration

  1. Nityamātmājñaptyā veti vāsiṣṭhaḥ.

Translation

Vasistha says: “Or by constant Self-awareness.”

Sutra 80

Devanagari

आत्मानं जानता गृह्यमाणा अपि विषयाः स्वतो भेदेन नानुभूयन्ते।। 80।।

Transliteration

  1. Ātmānaṃ jānatā gṛhyamāṇā api viṣayāḥ svato bhedena nānubhūyante.

Translation

For one who knows the Self, even the objects being perceived are not experienced as separate from oneself.

Sutra 81

Devanagari

इयमुपनिशत्सु सद्विद्योच्यते ।। 81।।

Transliteration

  1. Iyamupaniṣatsu sadvidyocyate.

Translation

In the Upanishads, this is called Sad-Vidya (The Science of Reality).

Sutra 82

Devanagari

आत्मविद्या ब्रह्मविद्या सद्विद्येति चैकार्थाः ।। 82।।

Transliteration

  1. Ātmavidyā brahmavidyā sadvidyeti caikārthā.

Translation

Atma-Vidya (Self-knowledge), Brahma-Vidya (God-knowledge), and Sad-Vidya are one and the same.

Sutra 83

Devanagari

सुन्दर्युपासनादात्मानुभवसिद्धिरात्मानुभवसिद्धिः ।। 83।।

Transliteration

  1. Sundaryupāsanād-ātmānubhavasiddhirātmānubhavasiddhiḥ.

Translation

From the worship of Sundari comes the attainment of Self-realization; the attainment of Self-realization.
