The Philosophy of Bhuvaneshvari

Sutra 1

Devanagari

भुवनेश्वरीं व्याख्यास्यामः ।। 1।।

Transliteration

  1. Bhuvaneśvarīṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ.

Translation

We shall now explain Bhuvaneshvari.

Sutra 2

Devanagari

चतुर्थी सा दशसु महाविद्यासु ।। 2।।

Transliteration

  1. Caturthī sā daśasu mahāvidyāsu.

Translation

She is the fourth among the ten Mahavidyas.

Sutra 3

Devanagari

भुवनेश्वर्येव नामान्तरेण माया ।। 3।।

Transliteration

  1. Bhuvaneśvaryeva nāmantareṇa māyā.

Translation

Bhuvaneshvari is simply another name for Maya.

Sutra 4

Devanagari

परमस्येक्षाशक्तिर्भुवनेश्वरी ।। 4।।

Transliteration

  1. Paramasyekṣāśaktir-bhuvaneśvarī.

Translation

Bhuvaneshvari is the power of “beholding” (Iksha-shakti) of the Supreme.

Devanagari

अदितिरधिदैवतम् ।। 5।।

Transliteration

  1. Aditir-adhidaivatam.

Translation

Her presiding deity (Adhidaivata) is Aditi.

Sutra 6

Devanagari

ज्ञानस्य निमित्तभूतः पूर्वो व्यापार ईक्षा ।। 6।।

Transliteration

  1. Jñānasya nimittabhūtaḥ pūrvo vyāpāra īkṣā.

Translation

“Beholding” (Iksha) is the initial movement of consciousness that serves as the cause of knowledge.

Sutra 7

Devanagari

ईक्षाशक्तिरिच्छाशक्तिरित्यनर्थान्तरम् ।। 7।।

Transliteration

  1. Īkṣāśaktir-icchāśaktir-ityanarthāntaram.

Translation

There is no difference between the power of beholding (Iksha-shakti) and the power of will (Iccha-shakti).

Devanagari

क्वचिदीक्षापूर्विका सृष्टिः प्रदर्श्यते ।। 8।।

Transliteration

  1. Kvacidīkṣāpūrvikā sṛṣṭiḥ pradarśyate.

Translation

In some places, creation is shown to be preceded by beholding.

Sutra 9

Devanagari

क्वचिदिच्छापूर्विका ।। 9।।

Transliteration

  1. Kvacidicchāpūrvikā.

Translation

In others, it is shown to be preceded by will.

Sutra 10

Devanagari

अविशेषादेव द्वयोः ।। 10।।

Transliteration

  1. Aviśeṣādeva dvayoḥ.

Translation

Because there is no essential difference between the two.

On Space and Perception

Sutra 11

Devanagari

ईशस्येक्षैव विशालो देशः ।। 11।।

Transliteration

  1. Īśasyekṣaiva viśālo deśaḥ.

Translation

The very “beholding” of the Lord is vast space.

Sutra 12

Devanagari

प्रतिदर्शकयन्त्रे यावद्दृष्टिगतिविशालं पश्यामः देशम् ।। 12।।

Transliteration

  1. Pratidarśakayantre yāvaddṛṣṭigativisālaṃ paśyāmaḥ deśam.

Translation

Just as through a viewing instrument (lens), we see a space as vast as the range of our vision.

Sutra 13

Devanagari

स च देशो न यथार्थः ।। 13।।

Transliteration

  1. Sa ca deśo na yathārthaḥ.

Translation

And that space is not “real” (in an absolute sense).

Sutra 14

Devanagari

अस्मद्दृष्टेर्नातिरिच्यते ।। 14।।

Transliteration

  1. Asmaddṛṣṭernātiricyate.

Translation

It does not exist apart from our vision.

Sutra 15

Devanagari

विमले जले पश्यामः महान्तमाकाशम् ।। 15।।

Transliteration

  1. Vimale jale paśyāmaḥ mahāntamākāśam.

Translation

In clear water, we see the vast sky.

Sutra 16

Devanagari

सह सूर्येण दिवा ।। 16।।

Transliteration

  1. Saha sūryeṇa divā.

Translation

With the sun during the day.

Sutra 17

Devanagari

सह नक्षत्रैः सहचन्द्रमसा च निशि ।। 17।।

Transliteration

  1. Saha nakṣatraiḥ sahacandramasā ca niśi.

Translation

With the stars and the moon at night.

Sutra 18

Devanagari

स च देशो न यथार्थः ।। 18।।

Transliteration

  1. Sa ca deśo na yathārthaḥ.

Translation

And that space is not real.

Sutra 19

Devanagari

अस्मद्दृष्टेर्नातिरिच्यते ।। 19।।

Transliteration

  1. Asmaddṛṣṭernātiricyate.

Translation

It does not exist apart from our vision.

Sutra 20

Devanagari

स्वप्नदेशश्चैवम् ।। 20।।

Transliteration

  1. Svapnadeśaś-caivam.

Translation

The space in a dream is the same.

Sutra 21

Devanagari

यावती दृष्टिस्तावन् देशो भवति ।। 21।।

Transliteration

  1. Yāvatī dṛṣṭistāvanddeśo bhavati.

Translation

As far as the vision extends, so does the space exist.

Sutra 22

Devanagari

ईशस्य दृष्टिरपारा ।। 22।।

Transliteration

  1. Īśasya dṛṣṭir-apārā.

Translation

The vision of the Lord is boundless.

Sutra 23

Devanagari

तस्माद्विश्वस्य देशश्चापारः ।। 23।।

Transliteration

  1. Tasmādviśvasya deśaś-cāpāraḥ.

Translation

Therefore, the space of the universe is also boundless.

Sutra 24

Devanagari

अपारश्च देश आकाशान्नातिरिच्यते ।। 24।।

Transliteration

  1. Apāraś-ca deśa ākāśānnātiricyate.

Translation

And this boundless space is nothing other than Akasha (the Ether/Firmament).

Sutra 25

Devanagari

तस्माद्भुवनेश्वर्याकाशः ।। 25।।

Transliteration

  1. Tasmād-bhuvaneśvaryākāśaḥ.

Translation

Therefore, Bhuvaneshvari is Akasha.

The Canvas of the Universe

Sutra 26

Devanagari

विश्वस्मिन्नाकाशो भित्तिस्थानीयः ।। 26।।

Transliteration

  1. Viśvasminnākāșo bhittisthānīyaḥ.

Translation

The Akasha is like the wall (the canvas) of the universe.

Sutra 27

Devanagari

क्रियाशब्दज्ञानानि चित्रस्थानीयानि ।। 27।।

Transliteration

  1. Kriyāśabdajñānāni citrasthānīyāni.

Translation

Action, sound, and knowledge are like the paintings upon it.

Sutra 28

Devanagari

तस्मादिह भुवनेश्वर्यां पूर्वाः प्रतितिष्ठन्ति ।। 28।।

Transliteration

  1. Tasmād-iha bhuvaneśvaryāṃ pūrvāḥ pratitiṣṭhanti.

Translation

Therefore, the preceding powers (Kali, Tara, Sundari) established themselves here in Bhuvaneshvari.

Sutra 29

Devanagari

विश्वं प्रतितिष्ठतीत्युक्तं भवति ।। 29।।

Transliteration

  1. Viśvaṃ pratitiṣṭhatītyuktaṃ bhavati.

Translation

It is said, therefore, that the universe is established in Her.

Sutra 30

Devanagari

ईक्षावल्ल्ल्यां मूलमिच्छा ।। 30।।

Transliteration

  1. Īkṣāvalyām mūlam-icchā.

Translation

The root of the creeper of beholding is Desire/Will (Iccha).

Sutra 31

Devanagari

आद्यादृष्टिरिच्छेत्युक्तं भवति ।। 31।।

Transliteration

  1. Ādyādṛṣṭir-icchetyuktaṃ bhavati.

Translation

It is said that the primary vision is Will.

Sutra 32

Devanagari

प्रतिदृष्टीच्छात्वमित्येके ।। 32।।

Transliteration

  1. Pratidṛṣṭīcchātvam-ityeke.

Translation

Every act of vision is indeed an act of will.

On Attachment and Experience

Sutra 33

Devanagari

रसानुभूत्यौदासीन्याभ्यां तद्भावाभावनिर्णयो लोके ।। 33।।

Transliteration

  1. Rasānubhūtyaudāsīnyābhyāṃ tadbhāvābhāvanirṇayo loke.

Translation

In the world, the presence or absence of “state” is decided by the enjoyment of flavor (rasa) or by indifference.

Sutra 34

Devanagari

ईशे च तथा स्यात् ।। 34।।

Transliteration

  1. Īśe ca tathā syāt.

Translation

The same applies to the Lord.

Sutra 35

Devanagari

सर्वरसानुभूतिमानीष इत्येकः पक्षः ।। 35।।

Transliteration

  1. Sarvarasānubhūtimānīṣa ityekaḥ pakṣaḥ.

Translation

One view is that the Lord possesses the enjoyment of all flavors.

Sutra 36

Devanagari

असङ्गं इत्यन्यः ।। 36।।

Transliteration

  1. Asangam ityanyaḥ.

Translation

The other view is that He is unattached.

Sutra 37

Devanagari

असङ्गं एवानुभवतीत्युत्तरः ।। 37।।

Transliteration

  1. Asangam evānubhavatītyuttaraḥ.

Translation

The final answer is that only the unattached one truly experiences.

Sutra 38

Devanagari

इच्छातः सङ्गो नातिरिच्यत इति चेत् ।। 38।।

Transliteration

  1. Icchātaḥ sango nātiricyata iti cet.

Translation

If it is argued that Will is no different from attachment;

Sutra 39

Devanagari

वैराग्याय स उपदेशः ।। 39।।

Transliteration

  1. Vairāgyāya sa upadeśaḥ.

Translation

That teaching (of their identity) is meant for the purpose of dispassion (Vairagya).

Sutra 40

Devanagari

वस्तुतो ज्ञानस्य विषयात्मना परिणतस्य स्वानुभूतिच्युतिः सङ्गः ।। 40 ।।

Transliteration

  1. Vastuto jñānasya viṣayātmanā pariṇatasya svānubhūticyutiḥ sangaḥ.

Translation

In reality, attachment is the loss of one’s own experience when knowledge transforms into the form of an object.

Sutra 41

Devanagari

अनुभवितुं व्यापार इच्छा ।। 41।।

Transliteration

  1. Anubhavituṃ vyāpāra icchā.

Translation

Will is the movement of consciousness toward experiencing.

Aditi and Creation

Sutra 42

Devanagari

आकाशोऽधिभूतमप्यदितिः ।। 42।।

Transliteration

  1. Ākāśo’dhibhūtam-apyaditiḥ.

Translation

Akasha, as the elemental foundation (Adhibhuta), is also Aditi.

Sutra 43

Devanagari

अखण्ड्यत्वात् ।। 43।।

Transliteration

  1. Akhaṇḍyatvāt.

Translation

Because she is “indivisible” (Akhandyatvat—from the root diti, meaning division).

Sutra 44

Devanagari

ईशः कश्यप उच्यते ।। 44।।

Transliteration

  1. Īśaḥ kaśyapa ucyate.

Translation

The Lord is called Kashyapa.

Sutra 45

Devanagari

पश्यतीति ।। 45।।

Transliteration

  1. Paśyatīti.

Translation

Meaning: “He who sees” (Pashyati).

Sutra 46

Devanagari

अदितिः सर्वेषां देवानाम माता ।। 46।।

Transliteration

  1. Aditiḥ sarveṣāṃ devānāṃ mātā.

Translation

Aditi is the mother of all the Gods.

Sutra 47

Devanagari

कश्यपः पिता ।। 47।।

Transliteration

  1. Kaśyapaḥ pitā.

Translation

Kashyapa is the father.

Sutra 48

Devanagari

तन्नामकौ मुनिदम्पती अन्यौ ।। 48।।

Transliteration

  1. Tannāmakau munidampatī anyau.

Translation

The sage-couple by those names (Kashyapa and Aditi) are different.

Sutra 49

Devanagari

अधिदैवतमदितिश्च मुनिपत्न्या अन्या ।। 49।।

Transliteration

  1. Adhidaivatam-aditiś-ca munipatnyā anyā.

Translation

The deity Aditi is different from the wife of the sage.

Sutra 50

Devanagari

सा न देवानां माता मुनिपत्नी ।। 50।।

Transliteration

  1. Sā na devānāṃ mātā munipatnī.

Translation

She (the sage’s wife) is not the mother of the (primordial) Gods.

Sutra 51

Devanagari

स न देवानां पिता मुनिः ।। 51।।

Transliteration

  1. Sa na devānāṃ pitā muniḥ.

Translation

He (the sage) is not the father of the Gods.

Sutra 52

Devanagari

नामसादृश्यात्तयोर्देवपितृत्वारोपः प्रामादिकः ।। 52।।

Transliteration

  1. Nāmasādṛśyāttayor-devapitṛtvaropaḥ prāmādikaḥ.

Translation

Imposing the “fatherhood of gods” on those two due to the similarity of names is an error.

The Foundation of the Worlds

Sutra 53

Devanagari

अस्यामेव शक्त्यां सर्वं भुवनमोतं प्रोतं च ।। 53।।

Transliteration

  1. Asyāmeva śaktyāṃ sarvaṃ bhuvanamotaṃ protaṃ ca.

Translation

In this very power, the entire universe is woven like warp and weft.

Sutra 54

Devanagari

आकाशे खलु गार्गीति श्रुतेः ।। 54।।

Transliteration

  1. Ākāśe khalu gārgīti śruteḥ.

Translation

As stated in the Shruti (Upanishad): “In Akasha, O Gargi…”

Sutra 55

Devanagari

तथोपलब्धेश्च ।। 55।।

Transliteration

  1. Tathopalabdheśca.

Translation

And also because it is so perceived.

Sutra 56

Devanagari

तस्माद्भुनेश्वरीयमुच्यते ।। 56।।

Transliteration

  1. Tasmād-bhuvaneśvary-iyamucyate.

Translation

Therefore, She is called Bhuvaneshvari (The Sovereign of the Worlds).

Sutra 57

Devanagari

भुवनमप्येषैव भवति ।। 57।।

Transliteration

  1. Bhuvanam-apyeṣaiva bhavati.

Translation

She herself becomes the world.

Sutra 58

Devanagari

प्रकृतित्वात् ।। 58।।

Transliteration

  1. Prakṛtitvāt.

Translation

Because She is the Material Cause (Prakriti).

Sutra 59

Devanagari

प्रकृतित्वं च मूलदृष्टित्वात् ।। 59।।

Transliteration

  1. Prakrutitvaṃ ca mūladṛṣṭitvāt.

Translation

And She is the initiator because She is the Root Vision.

Sutra 60

Devanagari

एवं जगतो दृष्टिमूलकत्वं व्याख्यातम् ।। 60।।

Transliteration

  1. Evaṃ jagato dṛṣṭimūlakatvaṃ vyākhyātam.

Translation

Thus, the world’s origin in “Vision” has been explained.

Sutra 61

Devanagari

अस्मद्दृष्टिरेव सृष्टिरिति परे ।। 61।।

Transliteration

  1. Asmaddṛṣṭireva sṛṣṭiriti pare.

Translation

Others say: “Our vision itself is creation” (Drishti-Srishti-Vada).

Sutra 62

Devanagari

स्वप्नसृष्टिरेव सा ।। 62।।

Transliteration

  1. Svapnasṛṣṭireva sā.

Translation

That would make it like a dream-creation.

Sutra 63

Devanagari

अस्मच्छब्दस्य ब्रह्मपरत्वे तु न विप्रतिपत्तिः ।। 63।।

Transliteration

  1. Asmacchabdasya brahmaparatve tu na vipratipattiḥ.

Translation

If the word “Our” (in “Our vision”) refers to Brahman, there is no contradiction.

The Three Powers

Sutra 64

Devanagari

त्रयाणां शक्तिविशेषाणां सर्वात्मकत्वे प्रमाणानि दृश्यन्ते ।। 64।।

Transliteration

  1. Trayāṇāṃ śaktiviśeṣāṇāṃ sarvātmakatve pramāṇāni dṛśyante.

Translation

Proofs are seen for the all-pervasive nature of the three specific powers.

Sutra 65

Devanagari

अदितिर्जातमदितिर्जनित्वमितीच्छाशक्तेः ।। 65।।

Transliteration

  1. Aditir-jātam-aditir-janitvam-itīcchāśakteḥ.

Translation

“Aditi is what is born, Aditi is what is to be born”—this refers to the Power of Will (Iccha-shakti).

Sutra 66

Devanagari

यमो ह जातो यमो जनित्वमिति कालात्मिकायाः क्रियाशक्तेः ।। 66।।

Transliteration

  1. Yamo ha jāto yamo janitvam-iti kālātmikāyāḥ kriyāśakteḥ.

Translation

“Yama is what is born, Yama is what is to be born”—this refers to the Power of Action (Kriya-shakti) in the form of Time.

Sutra 67

Devanagari

पुरुष एवेदं सर्वमिति ज्ञानशक्तेः ।। 67।।

Transliteration

  1. Puruṣa evedaṃ sarvam-iti jñānaśakteḥ.

Translation

“Purusha is all this”—this refers to the Power of Knowledge (Jnana-shakti).

Sutra 68

Devanagari

अत एव व्यापकत्वमासाम् ।। 68।।

Transliteration

  1. Ata eva vyāpakatvam-āsām.

Translation

Therefore, these powers are all-pervasive.

Sutra 69

Devanagari

एवमिच्छाशक्तिज्ञानशक्तिक्रियाशक्तीनां भुवनेश्वरी सुन्दरी कालीनां माहाभाग्यं व्याख्यातम् ।। 69।।

Transliteration

  1. Evam-icchāśaktijñānaśaktikriyāśaktīnāṃ bhuvaneśvarī sundarī kālīnāṃ māhābhāgyaṃ vyākhyātam.

Translation

Thus, the great glory of the powers of Will, Knowledge, and Action—Bhuvaneshvari, Sundari, and Kali—is explained.

Sutra 70

Devanagari

देशस्य व्यापकत्वं वैशाल्यमिव विश्वस्य ।। 70।।

Transliteration

  1. Deśasya vyāpakatvaṃ vaiśālyam-iva viśvasya.

Translation

The pervasiveness of space is like the vastness of the universe.

Sutra 71

Devanagari

कालस्य दैर्घ्यमिव ।। 71।।

Transliteration

  1. Kālasya dairghyam-iva.

Translation

Like the length of time.

Sutra 72

Devanagari

आत्मनः स्वरूपमिव ।। 72।।

Transliteration

  1. Ātmanaḥ svarūpam-iva.

Translation

Like the nature of the Self.

Sutra 73

Devanagari

तस्मात् न विप्रतिषेधः ।। 73।।

Transliteration

  1. Tasmāt na vipratiṣedhaḥ.

Translation

Therefore, there is no contradiction.

Practice and Worship

Sutra 74

Devanagari

भुवनेश्वरी परमा शान्ता ।। 74।।

Transliteration

  1. Bhuvaneśvarī paramā śāntā.

Translation

Bhuvaneshvari is supremely peaceful.

Sutra 75

Devanagari

सर्वाभ्यः क्रियाभ्य आत्मानं समर्प्य निश्चला तिष्ठति ।। 75।।

Transliteration

  1. Sarvābhyaḥ kriyābhya ātmānaṃ samarpya niścalā tiṣṭhati.

Translation

Having surrendered Herself to all actions, She remains motionless.

Sutra 76

Devanagari

परमां शान्तिं कामयमानो भुवनेश्वरीमुपासीत ।। 76।।

Transliteration

  1. Paramāṃ śāntiṃ kāmayamāno bhuvaneśvarīmupāsīta.

Translation

One desiring supreme peace should worship Bhuvaneshvari.

Sutra 77

Devanagari

मायया ।। 77।।

Transliteration

  1. Māyayā.

Translation

Through the Maya (the seed syllable Hrim).

Sutra 78

Devanagari

तान्त्रिको मन्त्रोऽयम् ।। 78।।

Transliteration

  1. Tāntriko mantro’yam.

Translation

This is a Tantric Mantra.

Sutra 79

Devanagari

अस्य ब्रह्मणमृषिमाहुः ।। 79।।

Transliteration

  1. Asya brahmaṇam-ṛṣimāhuḥ.

Translation

Its Rishi is said to be Brahman.

Sutra 80

Devanagari

गायत्रीं छन्दः ।। 80।।

Transliteration

  1. Gāyatrīṃ chandaḥ.

Translation

The Meter is Gayatri.

Sutra 81

Devanagari

अत्रार्चिकप्रणवो बीजम् ।। 81।।

Transliteration

  1. Atrārchikapraṇavo bījam.

Translation

The Archika-Pranava is the Seed (Bija).

Sutra 82

Devanagari

अग्निः शक्तिः ।। 82।।

Transliteration

  1. Agniḥ śaktiḥ.

Translation

Agni is the Power (Shakti).

Sutra 83

Devanagari

आकाशः कीलकम् ।। 83।।

Transliteration

  1. Ākāśaḥ kīlakam.

Translation

Akasha is the Kilaka (the Pin).

Sutra 84

Devanagari

षड्दीर्घयुक्तमायया न्यासः ।। 84।।

Transliteration

  1. Ṣaḍdīrghayuktamāyayā nyāsaḥ.

Translation

The ritual placement (Nyasa) is done with the Maya-mantra joined with the six long vowels.

Sutra 85

Devanagari

ध्यानं सुन्दरीवत् ।। 85।।

Transliteration

  1. Dhyānaṃ sundarīvat.

Translation

The meditation (Dhyana) is like that of Sundari.

Sutra 86

Devanagari

‘‘अदितिर्द्यौरदितिरन्तरिक्षमदितिर्माता स पिता स पुत्रः। विश्वे देवा अदितिः पञ्च जना अदितिनिर्जातमदितिर्जनित्वम् ।।’’ इति राहूगणेन गोतमेन दृष्ट्या वैदिक्या त्रिष्टुभा विद्यया वा ।। 86।।

Transliteration

  1. ‘‘Aditir-dyaur-aditir-antarikṣam-aditir-mātā sa pitā sa putraḥ। viśve devā aditiḥ pañca janā aditinir-jātam-aditir-janitvam।।’’ iti rāhūgaṇena gotamena dṛṣṭyā vaidikyā triṣṭubhā vidyayā vā.

Translation

Or, according to the Vedic vision of Gautama Rahugana, with the Trishtubh verse: “Aditi is the sky, Aditi is the atmosphere, Aditi is mother, father, and son…”

Sutra 87

Devanagari

अथास्याः शुद्धमुपासनम् ।। 87।।

Transliteration

  1. Athāsyāḥ śuddhamupāsanam.

Translation

Now, Her pure worship.

Sutra 88

Devanagari

दृग्दृश्ययोरन्तरभूत आकाश एव सदा द्रष्टव्यः ।। 88।।

Transliteration

  1. Dṛgdṛśyayor-antarabhūta ākāśa eva sadā draṣṭavyaḥ.

Translation

One should always contemplate the Akasha (Space) that exists between the seer and the seen.

Sutra 89

Devanagari

संसारिणां तु दृष्टेर्मार्ग एव नभः ।। 89।।

Transliteration

  1. Saṃsāriṇāṃ tu dṛṣṭer-mārga eva nabhaḥ.

Translation

For worldly people, the sky is merely a path for the eyes.

Sutra 90

Devanagari

न लक्ष्यम् ।। 90।।

Transliteration

  1. Na lakṣyam.

Translation

It is not the target (of their focus).

Sutra 91

Devanagari

पृथिव्याद्युपासनं कष्टम् ।। 91।।

Transliteration

  1. Pṛthivyādyupāsanaṃ kaṣṭam.

Translation

The worship of Earth and other elements is difficult.

Sutra 92

Devanagari

प्रियाप्रियोभयास्पदत्वात् ।। 92।।

Transliteration

  1. Priyāpriyobhayāspadatvāt.

Translation

Because they are the basis of both the pleasant and the unpleasant.

Sutra 93

Devanagari

यत्र द्वन्द्वोपरमस्तल्लक्ष्यमुत्तमम् ।। 93।।

Transliteration

  1. Yatra dvandvoparamas-tallakshyamuttamam.

Translation

The target lies in the devotion to that where the “pairs of opposites” (duality) cease.

Sutra 94

Devanagari

तादृश आकाशः ।। 94।।

Transliteration

  1. Tādṛśa ākāśaḥ.

Translation

Such is the Akasha.

Sutra 95

Devanagari

आकाशे हि न कस्यचिद्वेषो रागो वा ।। 95।।

Transliteration

  1. Ākāśe hi na kasyacid-veṣo rāgo vā.

Translation

In the Akasha, no one has hatred or attachment.

Sutra 96

Devanagari

दर्शनादभ्रसदसीति श्लोकपादोऽत्र भवति ।। 96।।

Transliteration

  1. Darśanād-abhrasadasīti ślokapādo’tra bhavati.

Translation

Here applies the verse-line: “From seeing, you are the assembly of clouds.”

Sutra 97

अभ्रस्य सदस्त्वं ब्रह्माण्डसंकीर्णत्वात् ।। 97।।

Transliteration

  1. Abhrasya sadastvaṃ brahmāṇḍasaṅkīrṇatvāt.

Translation

The “assembly of clouds” refers to the density of the Cosmic Egg (Brahmanda).

Sutra 98

Devanagari

सेयं हिरण्मयाण्डानां सभा द्यौः कनकसभोच्यते ।। 98।।

Transliteration

  1. Seyaṃ hiraṇmayāṇḍānāṃ sabhā dyauḥ kanakasabhocyate.

Translation

This assembly of golden eggs is called the “Golden Hall” (Kanakasabha).

तत्रेशस्य ताण्डवं कालीपटले व्याख्यातम् ।। 99।।

Transliteration

  1. Tatreśasya tāṇḍavaṃ kālīpaṭale vyākhyātam.

Translation

The dance of the Lord (Shiva) there was explained in the chapter on Kali.

पश्यन्नाकाशं साक्षिणि प्रतितिष्ठेत् ।। 100।।

Transliteration

  1. Paśyann-ākāśaṃ sākṣiṇi pratitiṣṭhet.

Translation

Beholding the Akasha, one should remain established in the Witness (Sakshi).

द्रष्टावेव हि तदा दृष्टिः स्यात् ।। 101।।

Transliteration

  1. Draṣṭāveva hi tadā dṛṣṭiḥ syāt.

Translation

Then, vision remains only in the Seer.

Sutra 102

Devanagari

इयं परोवरीयसी विद्योपनिषत्सु गीयते ।। 102।।

Transliteration

  1. Iyaṃ parovarīyasī vidyopaniṣatsu gīyate.

Translation

This is the “Parovariyasi” (higher than the high) Vidyā sung in the Upanishads.

परोवरीयानुद्गीथ आकाशो ह्युक्तः ।। 103।।

Transliteration

  1. Parovarīyānudgītha ākāśo hyuktaḥ.

Translation

For the Akasha is called the “Greater-than-Great Udgitha.”

तत्राकाशमीशमेके व्याचक्षते ।। 104।।

Transliteration

  1. Tatrākāśamīśameke vyācakṣate.

Translation

There, they explain Akasha as the Lord Himself.

Sutra 105

Devanagari

अभेदात्तदुपपत्तिः ।। 105।।

Transliteration

  1. Abhedāttadupapattiḥ.

Translation

That is justified due to their non-difference.

Sutra 106

Devanagari

दृष्टेर्वस्त्वेव हि लक्ष्यार्थः ।। 106।।

Transliteration

  1. Dṛṣṭer-vastveva hi lakṣyārthaḥ.

Translation

The true target of vision is the Reality itself.

Sutra 107

Devanagari

अन्तराकाशं वाऽनुसन्दध्यात् ।। 107।।

Transliteration

  1. Antarākāśaṃ vā’nusandadhyāt.

Translation

Or, one should contemplate the “Inner Space” (Antarakasha).

Sutra 108

Devanagari

इयमुपनिशत्सु दहरविद्योच्यते ।। 108।।

Transliteration

  1. Iyamupaniṣatsu daharavidyocyate.

Translation

In the Upanishads, this is called Dahara-Vidya.

Sutra 109

Devanagari

भुवनेश्वर्युपासनाच्छान्तिमधिगच्छेच्छान्तिमधिगच्छेत् ।। 109।।

Transliteration

  1. Bhuvaneśvaryupāsanāc-chāntim-adhigacchec-chāntim-adhigacchet.

Translation

By the worship of Bhuvaneshvari, one attains peace—one attains peace.
