Sutra 1

Devanagari

धूमावतीं व्याख्यास्यामः ।। 1।।

Transliteration

  1. Dhūmāvatīṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ.

Translation

Now we shall expound upon Dhumavati.

Sutra 2

Devanagari

सप्तमी सा दशसु महाविद्यासु ।। 2।।

Transliteration

  1. Saptamī sā daśasu mahāvidyāsu.

Translation

She is the seventh among the ten Mahavidyas.

Sutra 3

Devanagari

परमस्य प्रलयकालिकी निद्रा धूमावती ।। 3।।

Transliteration

  1. Paramasya pralayakālikī nidrā dhūmāvatī.

Translation

Dhumavati is the cosmic sleep of the Supreme Being at the time of the final dissolution (Pralaya).

Sutra 4

Devanagari

मुक्तानां च नित्यानन्दनिद्रा ।। 4।।

Transliteration

  1. Muktānāṃ ca nityānandanidrā.

Translation

For the liberated ones, she is the sleep of eternal bliss.

Sutra 5

Devanagari

संसारिणां तु निद्रा मूर्छा विस्मृतिश्च ।। 5।।

Transliteration

  1. Saṃsāriṇāṃ tu nidrā mūrchā vismṛtiś-ca.

Translation

But for those in the worldly cycle (Samsaris), she is sleep, fainting, and forgetfulness.

Sutra 6

Devanagari

अविद्या च यया संसारी नात्मानं जानाति ।। 6।।

Transliteration

  1. Avidyā ca yayā saṃsārī nātmānaṃ jānāti.

Translation

She is the Nescience (Avidya) by which the worldly being does not know the Self.

Sutra 7

Devanagari

सा मायातोऽर्थान्तरम् ।। 7।।

Transliteration

  1. Sā māyāto’rthāntaram.

Translation

She is distinct from Maya.

Sutra 8

Devanagari

यथैकं बहुधा पश्यति सा माया ।। 8।।

Transliteration

  1. Yathaikaṃ bahudhā paśyati sā māyā.

Translation

That by which one sees the One as many is Maya.

Sutra 9

Devanagari

यया सन्तं न पश्यति साऽविद्या ।। 9।।

Transliteration

  1. Yayā santaṃ na paśyati sā’vidyā.

Translation

That by which one does not see that which exists (the Truth) is Avidya (Dhumavati).

Sutra 10

Devanagari

देव्याश्च निद्राभ्रान्तिरूपत्वं पौराणिके देवीसूक्त उक्तम् ।। 10।।

Transliteration

  1. Devyāś-ca nidrābhrāntirūpatvaṃ paurāṇike devīsūkta uktam.

Translation

The Goddess’s nature as sleep and delusion is mentioned in the Puranic Devi Suktam.

Sutra 11

Devanagari

ज्येष्ठाऽधिदैवतम् ।। 11।।

Transliteration

  1. Jyeṣṭhā’dhidaivatam.

Translation

Her presiding deity aspect is Jyeshtha (the elder/misfortune).

Sutra 12

Devanagari

विश्वोच्चाटनकामो धूमावतीमुपासीत ।। 12।।

Transliteration

  1. Viśvoc-cāṭanakāmo dhūmāvatīmupāsīta.

Translation

One who desires the eradication (Uccatana) of the universe/worldly distractions should worship Dhumavati.

Sutra 13

Devanagari

द्विरनन्तधूमसहितेन शिरोऽन्तेन सम्बोधनेन ।। 13।।

Transliteration

  1. Dviranantadhūmasahitena śiro’ntena sambodhanena.

Translation

[Worship is done] by the vocative address ending with the head-mantra, accompanied by the double “infinite smoke” (the Dhum seed syllable).

Sutra 14

Devanagari

‘‘मो षु णः परापरा निर्ऋतिर्दुर्हणा वधीत् । पदीष्ट तृष्णया सह।।’’ इत्याङ्गिरसेन कण्वेन दृष्ट्या गायत्रया वा ।। 14।।

Transliteration

  1. ‘‘Mo ṣu ṇaḥ parāparā nirṛtir-durhaṇā vadhīt। padīṣṭa tṛṣṇayā saha।।’’ ityāṅgirasena kaṇvena dṛṣṭyā gāyatryā vā.

Translation

Or with the Gayatri verse seen by the Rishi Kanva of the Angirasa lineage: “Mo shu nah para para nirritir durhana vadhit…” (May the cruel Nirriti not strike us…).

Sutra 15

Devanagari

पूर्वा तान्त्रिकी विद्योत्तरा वैदिकी ।। 15।।

Transliteration

  1. Pūrvā tāntrikī vidyottarā vaidikī.

Translation

The former is the Tantric Vidya; the latter is the Vedic.

Sutra 16

Devanagari

पूर्वस्याः पिप्पलादमृषिमाहुः ।। 16।।

Transliteration

  1. Pūrvasyāḥ pippalādamṛṣimāhuḥ.

Translation

For the former (Tantric), Pippalada is said to be the Rishi.

Sutra 17

Devanagari

गायत्रीं छन्दः ।। 17।।

Transliteration

  1. Gāyatrīṃ chandaḥ.

Translation

Gayatri is the meter.

Sutra 18

Devanagari

आद्यमक्षरं बीजम् ।। 18।।

Transliteration

  1. Ādyam-akṣaraṃ bījam.

Translation

The first syllable is the Seed (Bija).

Sutra 19

Devanagari

शिरः शक्तिः ।। 19।।

Transliteration

  1. Śiraḥ śaktiḥ.

Translation

The “Head” (Shirah) is the Power (Shakti).

Sutra 20

Devanagari

सम्बोधनं कीलकम् ।। 20।।

Transliteration

  1. Sambodhanaṃ kīlakam.

Translation

The vocative address is the Pin (Kilakam).

Sutra 21

Devanagari

षड्दीर्घयुक्तेन बीजेन न्यासः ।। 21।।

Transliteration

  1. Ṣaḍdīrghayuktena bījena nyāsaḥ.

Translation

The ritual placement (Nyasa) is done with the Bija joined with the six long vowels.

Sutra 22

Devanagari

नीला कृशा क्षुधाऽवसन्ना सम्मार्जनीहस्ता ध्येया ।। 22।।

Transliteration

  1. Nīlā kṛśā kṣudhā’vasannā sammārjanīhastā dhyeyā.

Translation

She should be meditated upon as dark blue, lean, hungry, wearing old clothes, and holding a broom in her hand.

Sutra 23

Devanagari

अस्याः शुद्धमुपासनं व्यतिरेकेणैव भवति ।। 23।।

Transliteration

  1. Asyāḥ śuddhamupāsanaṃ vyatirekeṇaiva bhavati.

Translation

The pure worship of Her happens only through negation (Vyatireka).

Sutra 24

Devanagari

नान्वयेन ।। 24।।

Transliteration

  1. Nānvayena.

Translation

Not through affirmation (Anvaya).

Sutra 25

Devanagari

सर्वे संकल्पास्त्यक्तव्याः ।। 25।।

Transliteration

  1. Sarve saṃkalpāstyaktavyāḥ.

Translation

All thoughts (resolves) must be abandoned.

Sutra 26

Devanagari

तदेव महामौनम् ।। 26।।

Transliteration

  1. Tadeva mahāmaunam.

Translation

That indeed is the “Great Silence” (Maha-maunam).

Sutra 27

Devanagari

संकल्पेन पूर्णे किमपि नान्तरं कुर्यात् ।। 27।।

Transliteration

  1. Saṅkalpena pūrṇe kimapi nāntaraṃ kuryāt.

Translation

When full of resolve, one should not allow any internal gap (or distraction).

Sutra 28

Devanagari

अन्तरकारिणो भयं श्रूयते ।। 28।।

Transliteration

  1. Antarakāriṇo bhayaṃ śrūyate.

Translation

Fear is heard (in scriptures) for those who create such gaps/intervals.

Sutra 29

Devanagari

इयं भूमविद्योपनिषत्सु गीयते ।। 29।।

Transliteration

  1. Iyaṃ bhūmavidyopaniṣatsu gīyate.

Translation

This is sung in the Upanishads as Bhuma-Vidya (The Knowledge of the Infinite).

Sutra 30

Devanagari

तत्र हि ज्ञेयान्तरनिषेधः ।। 30।।

Transliteration

  1. Tatra hi jñeyāntaraniṣedha.

Translation

For there, all “other objects of knowledge” are negated.

Sutra 31

Devanagari

अत्रैव विद्याऽविद्ययोः समुच्चयः ।। 31।।

Transliteration

  1. Atraiva vidyā’vidyayoḥ samuccayaḥ.

Translation

Herein lies the combination of Vidya (Knowledge) and Avidya (Ignorance).

Sutra 32

Devanagari

केवला त्वविद्या निषिद्धा निद्रादिः ।। 32।।

Transliteration

  1. Kevalā tvavidyā niṣiddhā nidrādiḥ.

Translation

Mere Avidya, such as sleep, is forbidden (condemned).

Sutra 33

Devanagari

तदन्धं तमः ।। 33।।

Transliteration

  1. Tadandhaṃ tamaḥ.

Translation

That leads to “blinding darkness.”

Sutra 34

Devanagari

केवला विषयज्ञानात्मिका विद्या च निषिद्धा ।। 34।।

Transliteration

  1. Kevalā viṣayajñānāt-mikā vidyā ca niṣiddhā.

Translation

Mere Vidya, consisting of objective knowledge of subjects, is also forbidden.

Sutra 35

Devanagari

तद्भूयोऽन्धं तमः ।। 35।।

Transliteration

  1. Tadbhūyo’ndhaṃ tamaḥ.

Translation

That leads to “even greater darkness.”

Sutra 36

Devanagari

समुच्चयेन विद्याऽविद्ये उपास्ये ।। 36।।

Transliteration

  1. Samuccayena vidyā’vidye upāsye.

Translation

Therefore, Vidya and Avidya should be worshipped together.

Sutra 37

Devanagari

विद्या च पूर्णा स्वतःसिद्धा ।। 37।।

Transliteration

  1. Vidyā ca pūrṇā svataḥsiddhā.

Translation

Vidya is the Fullness, self-established.

Sutra 38

Devanagari

अविद्या विषयाणाम् ।। 38।।

Transliteration

  1. Avidyā viṣayāṇām.

Translation

Avidya belongs to the objects (the material world).

Sutra 39

Devanagari

विषयाविद्यया मृत्युं तीर्त्वा ।। 39।।

Transliteration

  1. Viṣayāvidyayā mṛtyuṃ tīrtvā.

Translation

Crossing over death through the Avidya of objects…

Sutra 40

Devanagari

पूर्णविद्ययाऽमृतमश्नुते ।। 40।।

Transliteration

  1. Pūrṇavidyayā’mṛtam-aśnute.

Translation

One attains immortality through the Fullness of Vidya.

Sutra 41

Devanagari

विषयाविद्ययैव पूर्णविद्या भासेत ।। 41।।

Transliteration

  1. Viṣayāvidyayāiva pūrṇavidyā bhāseta.

Translation

It is only through the Avidya of objects that the Full Vidya shines forth.

Sutra 42

Devanagari

एवमविद्याऽपि विषयाणां चेन्मुक्तिदा भवति ।। 42।।

Transliteration

  1. Evam-avidyā’pi viṣayāṇāṃ cenmuktidā bhavati.

Translation

Thus, even Avidya becomes the giver of liberation if it pertains to the (negation of) objects.

Sutra 43

Devanagari

धूमावत्युपासनाद्भवं तरेद्भवं तरेत् ।। 43।।

Transliteration

  1. Dhūmāvatyu-pāsanād-bhavaṃ tared-bhavaṃ taret.

Translation

By the worship of Dhumavati, one crosses the ocean of worldly existence; one crosses the ocean of worldly existence.
