Sutra 1

Devanagari

मातङ्गीं व्याख्यास्यामः ।। 1।।

Transliteration

Mātaṅgīṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ.

Translation

We shall now explain Matangi.

Sutra 2

Devanagari

नवमी सा दशसु महाविद्यासु ।। 2।।

Transliteration

Navamī sā daśasu mahāvidyāsu.

Translation

She is the ninth among the ten Mahavidyas.

Sutra 3

Devanagari

तारायास्तत्त्वेन मातङ्ग्यास्तत्त्वं व्याख्यातम् ।। 3।।

Transliteration

Tārāyāstattvena mātaṅgyāstattvaṃ vyākhyātam.

Translation

The essence of Matangi is explained through the essence of Tara.

Sutra 4

Devanagari

विभूतिभेदाद्विद्याभेदः ।। 4।।

Transliteration

Vibhūtibhedād-vidyābhedaḥ.

Translation

The distinction in Wisdom (Vidya) arises from the distinction in manifestations (Vibhuti).

Sutra 5

Devanagari

श्रोत्रग्राह्यः शब्दो मातङ्गी ।। 5।।

Transliteration

Śrotragrāhyaḥ śabdo mātaṅgī.

Translation

Matangi is Sound as perceived by the ear.

Sutra 6

Devanagari

सरस्वत्यधिदैवतम् ।। 6।।

Transliteration

Sarasvatyadhidaivatam.

Translation

Her presiding deity is Saraswati.

Sutra 7

Devanagari

गौरीत्येके ।। 7।।

Transliteration

Gaurītyeke.

Translation

She is indeed Gauri (the Fair/Shining One).

Sutra 8

Devanagari

मूलतत्त्वदृष्ट्या सोक्तिः ।। 8।।

Transliteration

Mūlatattvadṛṣṭyā soktiḥ.

Translation

That statement is made from the perspective of the Root Principle (Mula-Tattva).

Sutra 9

Devanagari

वैखर्यस्मासु ।। 9।।

Transliteration

Vaikharya-smāsu.

Translation

In us, she exists as Vaikhari (spoken/articulated speech).

Sutra 10

Devanagari

विद्याकामो मातङ्गीमुपासीत ।। 10।।

Transliteration

Vidyākāmo mātaṅgīmupāsīta.

Translation

One who desires knowledge (Vidya) should worship Matangi.

Sutra 11

Devanagari

विश्ववशीकरणकामो वा ।। 11।।

Transliteration

Viśvavaśī-karaṇakāmo vā.

Translation

Or, one who desires the power to enchant the entire world.

Sutra 12

Devanagari

विंशत्यक्षर्या ।। 12।।

Transliteration

Viṃśatyakṣaryā.

Translation

Her mantra consists of twenty syllables.

Sutra 13

Devanagari

वाणी हृदयमुच्छिष्टचाण्डाली मातङ्गी सर्ववशङ्कर्यः सम्बोधनान्ताः शिरश्चेति विंशत्यक्षरी ।। 13।।

Transliteration

Vāṇī hṛdayam-ucchiṣṭacāṇḍālī mātaṅgī sarvavaśankaryaḥ sambodhanāntāḥ śiraśceti viṃśatyakṣarī.

Translation

The twenty-syllable (mantra) consists of: Vāṇī, Hṛdaya, ‘Ucchiṣṭa-cāṇḍālī’, ‘Mātaṅgī’, ‘Sarva-vaśaṅkarī’ (all in the vocative case), and finally Śiraḥ.

Sutra 14

Devanagari

तान्त्रिकोऽयं मन्त्रः ।। 14।।

Transliteration

Tāntriko’yaṃ mantraḥ.

Translation

This is a Tantric mantra.

Sutra 15

Devanagari

अस्य कण्वमृषिमाहुः ।। 15।।

Transliteration

Asya kaṇvamṛṣimāhuḥ.

Translation

Its Seer (Rishi) is said to be Kanva.

Sutra 16

Devanagari

विराजं छन्दः ।। 16।।

Transliteration

Virājaṃ chandaḥ.

Translation

Its Meter (Chhandas) is Virat.

Sutra 17

Devanagari

वाणी बीजम् ।। 17।।

Transliteration

Vāṇī bījam.

Translation

The Seed (Bija) is Vani (Aim).

Sutra 18

Devanagari

शिरः शक्तिः ।। 18।।

Transliteration

Śiraḥ śaktiḥ.

Translation

The Power (Shakti) is the Head (Swaha).

Sutra 19

Devanagari

हृदयं कीलकम् ।। 19।।

Transliteration

Hṛdayaṃ kīlakam.

Translation

The Linchpin (Kilaka) is the Heart (Hrim).

Sutra 20

Devanagari

षड्भिः खण्डैर्न्यासः ।। 20।।

Transliteration

Ṣaḍbhiḥ khaṇḍair-nyāsaḥ.

Translation

The ritual placement (Nyasa) is done in six parts.

Sutra 21

Devanagari

श्यामा वीणाधारिणी ध्येया ।। 21।।

Transliteration

Śyāmā vīṇādhāriṇī dhyeyā.

Translation

She should be meditated upon as dark-complexioned (Syama) and holding a Veena.

Sutra 22

Devanagari

शुक्ला वा ।। 22।।

Transliteration

Śuklā vā.

Translation

Or as having a white/bright complexion.

Sutra 23

Devanagari

अवताररूपदृष्ट्या श्यामा ।। 23।।

Transliteration

Avatārarūpa-dṛṣṭyā śyāmā.

Translation

From the perspective of her Incarnation-form (Avatar), she is dark (Syama).

Sutra 24

Devanagari

मूलदेवतारूपदृष्ट्या शुक्ला ।। 24।।

Transliteration

Mūladevatārūpa-dṛṣṭyā śuklā.

Translation

From the perspective of her Root-deity-form, she is white/bright.

Sutra 25

Devanagari

मतङ्गस्य पुत्री हि वाग्देव्या अवतारः ।। 25।।

Transliteration

Mataṅgasya putrī hi vāgdevyā avatāraḥ.

Translation

For the daughter of Sage Matanga is indeed an incarnation of the Goddess of Speech (Vagdevi).

Sutra 26

Devanagari

एतेनास्याः शक्तेर्मातङ्गीत्वं व्याख्यातम् ।। 26।।

Transliteration

Etenāsyāḥ śakter-mātaṅgītvaṃ vyākhyātam.

Translation

By this, the “Matangi-ness” of this Power is explained.

Sutra 27

Devanagari

नित्यं जिह्वारसयोगादुच्छिष्टा ।। 27।।

Transliteration

Nityṃ jihvāra-sayogā-ducchiṣṭā.

Translation

She is called Ucchista (leftover/impure) because of her constant association with the tongue and saliva.

Sutra 28

Devanagari

एतेन ब्रह्मणस्पतेर्गणपतेरुच्छिष्टत्वं व्याख्यातम् ।। 28।।

Transliteration

Etena brahmaṇaspater-gaṇapater-ucchiṣṭatvaṃ vyākhyātam.

Translation

By this, the “Ucchista” nature of Ganapati (Brahmanaspati) is also explained.

Sutra 29

Devanagari

अत एव चाण्डाली ।। 29।।

Transliteration

Ata eva cāṇḍālī.

Translation

For this reason, she is called Chandali (the outcaste).

Sutra 30

Devanagari

अवतारजातितो वा ।। 30।।

Transliteration

Avatārajātito vā.

Translation

Or, it is because of the caste of her incarnation.

Sutra 31

Devanagari

मातङ्ग्या उच्छिष्टत्वेन सरस्वत्याः सरस्वतीत्वं व्याख्यातम् ।। 31।।

Transliteration

Mātaṅgyā ucchiṣṭatvena sarasvatyāḥ sarasvatītvaṃ vyākhyātam.

Translation

Through the “Ucchista” nature of Matangi, the “Saraswati” nature of Saraswati is explained.

Sutra 32

Devanagari

जिह्वारसः सरः ।। 32।।

Transliteration

Jihvārasaḥ saraḥ.

Translation

The “Lake” (Saras) is the essence/fluid of the tongue.

Sutra 33

Devanagari

तेन स्थानवत्त्वात्तद्वत्त्वम् ।। 33।।

Transliteration

Tena sthānavattvāttadvattvam.

Translation

Because she occupies that place, she possesses that quality.

Sutra 34

Devanagari

नाडीनाम्ना वा सरस्वती ।। 34।।

Transliteration

Nāḍīnāmnā vā sarasvatī.

Translation

Or, Saraswati is the name of a channel (Nadi) in the subtle body.

Sutra 35

Devanagari

जिह्वायां वाग्वाहिनी हि नाडी सरस्वती ।। 35।।

Transliteration

Jihvāyāṃ vāgvāhinī hi nāḍī sarasvatī.

Translation

The Nadi that carries speech in the tongue is indeed the Saraswati Nadi.

Sutra 36

Devanagari

नदीनाम्ना वा सरस्वती ।। 36।।

Transliteration

Nadīnāmnā vā sarasvatī.

Translation

Or, Saraswati is the name of a river.

Sutra 37

Devanagari

नदीदेवतयोः सम्बन्धोऽभिमानात् ।। 37।।

Transliteration

Nadīdevatayoḥ sambandho’bhimānāt.

Translation

The connection between the river and the deity exists through identification (Abhimana).

Sutra 38

Devanagari

स्तनितस्य मेघस्थानत्वाद्वा सरस्वती ।। 38।।

Transliteration

Stanitasya meghasthānatvādvā sarasvatī.

Translation

Or she is Saraswati because the thundering cloud (Stanita) is the source of the “lake” (water).

Sutra 39

Devanagari

स्तनितं हि सरस्वत्याः स्वरूपविशेषः ।। 39।।

Transliteration

Stanitaṃ hi sarasvatyāḥ svarūpaviśeṣaḥ.

Translation

Indeed, thunder is a specific form of Saraswati (as sound).

Sutra 40

Devanagari

अत्रार्थे मेघ एव सरः ।। 40।।

Transliteration

Atrārthe megha eva saraḥ.

Translation

In this context, the cloud itself is the “lake” (Saras).

Sutra 41

Devanagari

‘‘महो अर्णः सरस्वती प्र चेतयति केतुना। धियो विश्वा वि राजति ।।’’ इति वैश्वामित्रेण मधुच्छन्दसा दृष्ट्या वैदिक्या गायत्रया विद्यया वा ।। 41।।

Transliteration

‘‘Maho arṇaḥ sarasvatī pra cetayati ketunā। dhiyo viśvā vi rājati।।’’ iti vaiśvāmitreṇa madhucchandasā dṛṣṭyā vaidikyā gāyatryā vidyayā vā.

Translation

As seen in the Vedic Gayatri Vidya by Madhuchhandas (son of Vishvamitra): “Saraswati, the mighty flood, illumines with her banner; she shines over all thoughts.”

Sutra 42

Devanagari

स्वाध्यायाध्ययनमस्याः शुद्धमुपासनम् ।। 42।।

Transliteration

Svādhyāyādhyayanamasyāḥ śuddhamupāsanam.

Translation

The pure worship of her consists of the study of one’s own scriptures (Svadhyaya).

Sutra 43

Devanagari

प्रणववाहित्वे शब्देषु तारतम्यम् ।। 43।।

Transliteration

Praṇavavāhitve śabdeṣu tāratamyam.

Translation

When carried by the Omkara (Pranava), there are gradations in sounds.

Sutra 44

Devanagari

ध्वनिभ्यो वर्णेष्वधिकम् ।। 44।।

Transliteration

Dhvanibhyo varṇeṣvadhikam.

Translation

Letters (Varnas) are superior to mere sounds (Dhvanis).

Sutra 45

Devanagari

तत्रापि मन्त्रवर्णिकेषु ।। 45।।

Transliteration

Tatrāpi mantravarṇikeṣu.

Translation

Even among those, the letters of Mantras are superior.

Sutra 46

Devanagari

मन्त्राणामन्तर्यामितस्तेजोमयशब्दरूपतयैव प्रादुर्भावात् ।। 46।।

Transliteration

Mantrāṇām-antaryāmi-tastejomayaśabda-rūpatayāiva prādurbhāvāt.

Translation

Because Mantras manifest from the Inner Controller as forms of luminous sound.

Sutra 47

Devanagari

शंसेदुक्थं सुदानव उत द्युक्षमित्यादयो निगमा अत्र भवन्ति ।। 47।।

Transliteration

Śaṃsedukthaṃ sudānava uta dyukṣam-ityādayo nigamā atra bhavanti.

Translation

There are Vedic verses here, such as “Praise the hymn, O bountiful ones…”

Sutra 48

Devanagari

मन्त्राणां भाषान्तरीकरणे गूढार्थसमर्पणमेव प्रयोजनम् ।। 48।।

Transliteration

Mantrāṇāṃ bhāṣāntarī-karaṇe gūḍhārthasamarpana-meva prayojanam.

Translation

The purpose of translating Mantras into other languages is only to convey their hidden meaning.

Sutra 49

Devanagari

न जपोपयोगित्वम् ।। 49।।

Transliteration

Na japopayogitvam.

Translation

It is not for the purpose of chanting (Japa).

Sutra 50

Devanagari

मातङ्ग्युपासनाद्विदितवेदितव्यो भवेद्विदितवेदितव्यो भवेत् ।। 50 ।।

Transliteration

Mātaṅgyupāsanād-viditaveditavyo bhavedviditaveditavyo bhavet.

Translation

By the worship of Matangi, one becomes a Knower of all that is to be known; one becomes a Knower of all that is to be known.**
