Reason and Result of the Upasana

This note summarizes the specific motives for undertaking the spiritual practice (Upasana) of each Mahavidya and the ultimate results gained, according to their respective chapters in the Mahavidya Sutram.

  • हेतुः: आत्मशक्तेर्वृद्धये कालीमुपासीत ।। 35।।

  • फलम्: संसारिणः प्रहरत्खड्गं काली ।। 76।। योगिनां हस्तगतं खड्गं हस्तगतं खड्गम् ।। 77।।

  • हेतुः: सत्यविज्ञानसिद्धये तारामुपासीत ।। 29।।

Translation

  1. Kali:
  • Reason: One should worship Kali for the increase of one’s own power (Atma-shakti). (35)

  • Result: For the worldly person, Kali is a striking sword; for the Yogis, the sword is in their own hand. (76-77)

  1. Tara:
  • Reason: One should worship Tara for the attainment of the knowledge of Truth. (29)

  • Result: From the worship of Tara, one becomes possessed of divine wisdom. (65)

  1. Sundari:
  • Reason: A seeker of liberation or one who desires omniscience should worship Sundari. (54-55)

  • Result: From the worship of Sundari comes the attainment of Self-realization. (83)

  1. Bhuvaneshwari:
  • Reason: One desiring supreme peace should worship Bhuvaneshvari. (76)

  • Result: By the worship of Bhuvaneshvari, one attains peace. (109)

  • Reason: One who desires “Excellence” should worship Kamalatmika. (8)
  • Result: By the worship of Kamalatmika, one becomes excellent. (26)
