Reason and Result of the Upasana

This note summarizes the specific motives for undertaking the spiritual practice (Upasana) of each Mahavidya and the ultimate results gained, according to their respective chapters in the Mahavidya Sutram.

1. काली:

• हेतुः: आत्मशक्तेर्वृद्धये कालीमुपासीत ।। 35।।

• फलम्: संसारिणः प्रहरत्खड्गं काली ।। 76।। योगिनां हस्तगतं खड्गं हस्तगतं खड्गम् ।। 77।।

2. तारा:

• हेतुः: सत्यविज्ञानसिद्धये तारामुपासीत ।। 29।।

• फलम्: तारोपासनाद्दिव्यविज्ञानो भवेद्दिव्यविज्ञानो भवेत् ।। 65।।

3. सुन्दरी:

• हेतुः: मुमुक्षुः सुन्दरीमुपासीत ।। 54।। सर्वज्ञत्वकामो वा ।। 55।।

• फलम्: सुन्दर्युपासनादात्मानुभवसिद्धिरात्मानुभवसिद्धिः ।। 83।।

4. भुवनेश्वरी:

• हेतुः: परमां शान्तिं कामयमानो भुवनेश्वरीमुपासीत ।। 76।।

• फलम्: भुवनेश्वर्युपासनाच्छान्तिमधिगच्छेच्छान्तिमधिगच्छेत् ।। 109।।

5. भैरवी:

• हेतुः: ब्रह्मवर्चसकामो भैरवीमुपासीत ।। 19।। विद्याकामो वा ।। 20।।

• फलम्: भैरव्युपासनादोजस्वी भवेदोजस्वी भवेत् ।। 72।।

6. छिन्नमस्ता:

• हेतुः: योऽन्तरिक्षान्महतीं शक्तिमिच्छति स प्रचण्डचण्डिकामुपासीत ।। 75।।

• फलम्: प्रचण्डचण्डिकोपासनादपारशक्तिर्भवेदपारशक्तिर्भवेत् ।। 108।।

7. धूमावती:

• हेतुः: विश्वोच्चाटनकामो धूमावतीमुपासीत ।। 12।।

• फलम्: धूमावत्युपासनाद्भवं तरेद्भवं तरेत् ।। 43।।

8. बगलामुखी:

• हेतुः: शत्रुनिस्तरणकामो बगलामुखीमुपासीत ।। 16।।

• फलम्: बगलामुख्युपासनादस्त्रसिद्धिर्भवेदस्त्रसिद्धिर्भवेत् ।। 72।।

9. मातङ्गी:

• हेतुः: विद्याकामो मातङ्गीमुपासीत ।। 10।। विश्ववशीकरणकामो वा ।। 11।।

• फलम्: मातङ्ग्युपासनाद्विदितवेदितव्यो भवेद्विदितवेदितव्यो भवेत् ।। 50 ।।

10. कमलात्मिका:

• हेतुः: उत्तमत्वकामः कमलात्मिकामुपासीत ।। 8।।
• फलम्: कमलात्मिकोपासनादुत्तमो भवेदुत्तमो भवेत् ।। 26 ।।

Translation

1. Kali:

• Reason: One should worship Kali for the increase of one’s own power (Atma-shakti). (35)

• Result: For the worldly person, Kali is a striking sword; for the Yogis, the sword is in their own hand. (76-77)

2. Tara:

• Reason: One should worship Tara for the attainment of the knowledge of Truth. (29)

• Result: From the worship of Tara, one becomes possessed of divine wisdom. (65)

3. Sundari:

• Reason: A seeker of liberation or one who desires omniscience should worship Sundari. (54-55)

• Result: From the worship of Sundari comes the attainment of Self-realization. (83)

4. Bhuvaneshwari:

• Reason: One desiring supreme peace should worship Bhuvaneshvari. (76)

• Result: By the worship of Bhuvaneshvari, one attains peace. (109)

5. Bhairavi:

• Reason: One who desires Brahman-splendor or knowledge should worship Bhairavi. (19-20)

• Result: By the worship of Bhairavi, one becomes full of vigor (Ojasvi). (72)

6. Chinnamasta:

• Reason: He who desires great power from the intermediate realm should worship Prachanda Chandika. (75)

• Result: From the worship of Prachanda Chandika, infinite power arises. (108)

7. Dhumavati:

• Reason: One who desires the eradication of worldly distractions should worship Dhumavati. (12)

• Result: By the worship of Dhumavati, one crosses the ocean of worldly existence. (43)

8. Bagalamukhi:

• Reason: One who desires to overcome enemies should worship Bagalamukhi. (16)

• Result: From the worship of Bagalamukhi, the mastery of the spiritual Weapon is attained. (72)

9. Matangi:

• Reason: One who desires knowledge or the power to enchant the world should worship Matangi. (10-11)

• Result: By the worship of Matangi, one becomes a Knower of all that is to be known. (50)

10. Kamalatmika:

• Reason: One who desires “Excellence” should worship Kamalatmika. (8)
• Result: By the worship of Kamalatmika, one becomes excellent. (26)
