राजयोगसारसूत्रम् (Raja Yoga Sara Sutram)


प्रथमः खण्डः (Section One)


Sutra 1

Sanskrit Text

प्राणो गतिशक्तिमान् वायुः ॥

Translation

Prana is the air (Vayu) endowed with the power of movement.


Sutra 2

Sanskrit Text

एकत्र स्थित एव चलति तरङ्गैः ॥

Translation

Remaining in one place, it moves in waves.


Sutra 3

Sanskrit Text

उच्छ्वासनिःश्वासौ निभालयन् गतिशक्तिद्वारोपासीत वायुम् ॥

Translation

Observing inhalation and exhalation, one should worship Vayu through the gateway of movement-power.


Sutra 4

Sanskrit Text

ततस्तेजःशक्तिरुदिता स्यात् ॥

Translation

From that, the power of radiance (Tejas) arises.


Sutra 5

Sanskrit Text

प्राणस्तेजःशक्तिमानिन्द्रः ॥

Translation

Prana, endowed with the power of radiance, is Indra.


Sutra 6

Sanskrit Text

तेजःशक्तिरिन्द्राणी ॥

Translation

The power of radiance is Indrani.


Sutra 7

Sanskrit Text

नाडीष्वासाधारणमूष्मानुभवं निभालयन्निन्द्राणीद्वारोपासीतेन्द्रम् ॥

Translation

By observing the extraordinary sensation of heat in the channels, one should worship Indra through the gateway of Indrani.


Sutra 8

Sanskrit Text

ततः स्वरशक्तिरुद्रिक्ता स्यात् ॥

Translation

From that, the power of sound (Svara) becomes intensified.


Sutra 9

Sanskrit Text

प्राणः स्वरशक्तिमान् रुद्रः ॥

Translation

Prana, endowed with the power of sound, is Rudra.


Sutra 10

Sanskrit Text

स्वरशक्तिर्गौरी ॥

Translation

The power of sound is Gauri.


Sutra 11

Sanskrit Text

सूक्ष्मान्तरस्वरं निभालयन् गौरीद्वारोपासीत रुद्रम् ॥

Translation

Observing the subtle inner sound, one should worship Rudra through the gateway of Gauri.


Sutra 12

Sanskrit Text

सूक्ष्मान्तरस्वर एव प्रणव उच्यते वेदान्तेषु ॥

Translation

This subtle inner sound itself is called ‘Pranava’ (Om) in the Vedanta.


Sutra 13

स बहिर्व्यापकः ॥

Translation

It is all-pervading externally.


Sutra 14

Sanskrit Text

रुद्रोपासनेन क्षेत्रज्ञस्य चितिशक्तौ प्रतिष्ठां विन्देत् पाके समाप्ते ॥

Translation

Through the worship of Rudra, the Knower of the Field attains establishment in the Power of Consciousness upon the completion of the ripening (of the practice).


Sutra 15

Sanskrit Text

स उत्तमः पुरुषार्थः ॥

Translation

That is the supreme goal of human life.


Sutra 16

Sanskrit Text

तस्यां स्थितौ नित्यमप्रयत्नं तपः ॥

Translation

In that state of establishment, there is constant and effortless penance (Tapas).


Sutra 17

Sanskrit Text

तपसः पाकाद्भवन्ति पूर्वसंकल्पानुरूपाः सिद्धयः ॥

Translation

From the ripening of that penance, psychic powers (Siddhis) arise according to one’s previous intentions.


Sutra 18

Sanskrit Text

अवतारपुरुषाणां कार्यानुरूपाः ॥

Translation

For Divine Incarnations, these powers are according to their specific mission.


Sutra 19

Sanskrit Text

नित्यतपसः सिद्धयो न बन्धाय प्रमादासम्भवात् ॥

Translation

For those in constant penance, Siddhis do not lead to bondage because of the impossibility of negligence.


Sutra 20

Sanskrit Text

आद्यासु तिसृषु तपोभूमिषु ता इच्छतो देवतानुग्रहेण ॥

Translation

In the first three stages of penance, those powers come to the seeker by the grace of the Deities.


Sutra 21

Sanskrit Text

बन्धाय पुनरतपतः प्रमादसंभवात् ॥

Translation

However, they lead to bondage for one who stops penance, due to the possibility of negligence.


द्वितीयः खण्डः (Section Two)


Sutra 1

Sanskrit Text

व्यापकपरमशक्तीनां भूतानां सूक्ष्मो रससारः प्राणः ॥

Translation

Prana is the subtle essence of the all-pervading supreme powers and the elements.


Sutra 2

Sanskrit Text

तस्य हृदयमायतनम् ॥

Translation

Its abode is the heart.


Sutra 3

Sanskrit Text

तस्यैव चित्ताख्यान्तःकरणचतुष्टयवादिनां मतेन ॥

Translation

In the view of those who speak of the four-fold inner instrument, it is called ‘Chitta’.


Sutra 4

Sanskrit Text

तदुपाधिरात्मा जीवः ॥

Translation

The Self (Atman) conditioned by that is the individual soul (Jiva).


Sutra 5

Sanskrit Text

चित्तिरपां दमे विश्वायुरिति निगमोऽत्र भवति ॥

Translation

“Consciousness in the control of the waters (Pranas) is the life of all”—this is the Vedic quote here.


Sutra 6

Sanskrit Text

चितिशक्तौ निष्ठयान्तर्याम्यनुभूयेत सा ह्यन्तर्यामिणः प्राणोपाधेः ॥

Translation

Through establishment in the Power of Consciousness, the Indweller is experienced; for that is indeed (the experience) of the Indweller conditioned by Prana.


Sutra 7

Sanskrit Text

गुणशक्तिकर्मद्वारैव हि वस्तूनामनुभूतिः ॥

Translation

Experience of objects occurs only through the gates of quality, power, and action.


Sutra 8

Sanskrit Text

प्राणश्चानुभूयते संश्लेषात् ॥

Translation

Prana is experienced through integration/union.


Sutra 9

Sanskrit Text

अखण्डप्रकाशवित्तिरन्तर्याम्यनुभूतिः ॥

Translation

The experience of the Indweller is the Consciousness of unbroken light.


Sutra 10

Sanskrit Text

अखण्डरसवित्तिः प्राणानुभूतिः ॥

Translation

The experience of Prana is the Consciousness of unbroken essence.


Sutra 11

Sanskrit Text

तदुभयमविभाज्यं लिङ्गं निष्ठायाः ॥

Translation

These two are the indivisible sign of establishment.


तृतीयः खण्डः (Section Three)


Sutra 1

Sanskrit Text

प्राणस्य प्राणापानव्यानोदानसमानाः पञ्चक्रियाविभूतयः ॥

Translation

The five-fold action-manifestations of Prana are: Prana, Apana, Vyana, Udana, and Samana.


Sutra 2

Sanskrit Text

उच्छ्वासनिःश्वासक्रियावती विभूतिः स्वशब्देनैव व्यवह्रियते ॥

Translation

The action-manifestation involving inhalation and exhalation is referred to by the word “Prana” itself.


Sutra 3

विसर्जनक्रियावत्यपानः ॥

Translation

The activity of excretion movement is Apana.


Sutra 4

Sanskrit Text

चलनक्रियावती व्यानः ॥

Translation

The activity of circulation/movement is Vyana.


Sutra 5

भाषणक्रियावत्युदानः ॥

Translation

The activity of speech is Udana.


Sutra 6

पचनक्रियावती समानः ॥

Translation

The activity of digestion is Samana.


Sutra 7

मूलप्राणस्य शक्तिविशेषा एवैते न खण्डाः ॥

Translation

These are specific powers of the root Prana, not separate fragments.


Sutra 8

मूलप्राणस्य श्रेष्ठस्य प्रथमाविभूतिरुपासनेषु मुख्या ॥

Translation

Of the supreme root Prana, the first manifestation (breath) is primary in spiritual practices.


चतुर्थः खण्डः (Section Four)


Sutra 1

Sanskrit Text

प्राणस्य क्रियाशक्तिं प्रत्युद्गच्छेत्तदेकं तपो यथोक्तम्॥

Translation

One should encounter the power of action of the Prana; that alone is the penance (Tapas) as described.


Sutra 2

उदानस्यान्यत् ॥

Translation

That of Udana is different.


Sutra 3

Sanskrit Text

व्यानस्येतरत् ॥

Translation

That of Vyana is another.


Sutra 4

Sanskrit Text

भाषणक्रियायाः सकलक्रियाणां चोपासनाभ्यां ते नातिरिच्येते ॥

Translation

Through the worship of the activity of speech and all other activities, they (these powers) are not separate.


Sutra 5

Sanskrit Text

क्रियोपासनं च कुर्वतः क्रियायामेव दृष्टिः ॥

Translation

For one performing the worship of action, the vision (attention) remains fixed in the action itself.


पञ्चमः खण्डः (Section Five)


Sutra 1

Sanskrit Text

मूलाधारादाशिर एका सूक्ष्मा नाडी ॥

Translation

From the Muladhara (base) to the head, there is one subtle channel.


Sutra 2

Sanskrit Text

सा सुषुम्णा ॥

Translation

That is Sushumna.


Sutra 3

Sanskrit Text

शिरस आहृदयं सैव पुनरलम्बते ॥

Translation

From the head, that same (nadi) descends extending all the way to the heart.


Sutra 4

साऽमृता ॥

Translation

That is the Amrita (Nectarine channel).


Sutra 5

Sanskrit Text

एकस्या एव सुषुम्णायाः पश्चात्पुरश्च द्वौ मार्गाविति वा ॥

Translation

Or rather, they are the two paths of the same Sushumna—the rear and the front.


Sutra 6

Sanskrit Text

सुषुम्णायाः सव्यापसव्यगे नासापुटान्तव्यापिन्याविडापिङ्गले ॥

Translation

Moving to the left and right of Sushumna and pervading the nostrils are Ida and Pingala.


Sutra 7

Sanskrit Text

तयोः सव्यापसव्यगे नेत्रान्तव्यापिन्यौ गान्धारीहस्तिजिह्वे ॥

Translation

To the left and right of those, pervading the eyes, are Gandhari and Hastijihva.


Sutra 8

Sanskrit Text

तयोः सव्यापसव्यगे श्रोत्रान्तव्यापिन्यौ पूषालम्बुसे ॥

Translation

To the left and right of those, pervading the ears, are Pusha and Alambusa.


Sutra 9

Sanskrit Text

षडपि शिरोव्याप्य तत एव लम्बन्ते स्वावसानस्थानपर्यन्तम् ॥

Translation

All six pervade the head and from there hang down to their respective endpoints.


Sutra 10

Sanskrit Text

ता एताः सन्नाड्यः सप्तजिह्वा आधारवेदिगस्य तेजसः ॥

Translation

These seven channels are the seven tongues of the radiance situated on the altar of the base.


Sutra 11

Sanskrit Text

सप्तार्चिषः ॥

Translation

They are the Seven Flames.


Sutra 12

Sanskrit Text

सप्त हस्ताः ॥

Translation

They are the Seven Hands (or flames).


Sutra 13

Sanskrit Text

नाभिं नाडीनां जन्मस्थानमेके ॥

Translation

Some consider the navel to be the birthplace of the channels.


Sutra 14

Sanskrit Text

देहमध्यकन्दस्य तावत्पर्यन्तव्याप्तेर्नाडीनां संश्लिष्टत्वमत ऊर्ध्वं विभाग इति सोधिः ॥

Translation

Because of the pervasion of the channels up to that point, there is an integration of them within the central body-bulb; from there upwards is the division; this is the boundary.


Sutra 15

Sanskrit Text

देहमध्यकन्दस्य मूलस्थं पर्व मूलाधारः ॥

Translation

The segment at the base of the body-bulb is the Muladhara.


Sutra 16

Sanskrit Text

मध्यस्थं स्वाधिष्ठानम् ॥

Translation

The segment in the middle is Swadhisthana.


Sutra 17

Sanskrit Text

अग्रस्थं मणिपूरम् ॥

Translation

The segment at the top/front (of the bulb) is Manipura.


Sutra 18

Sanskrit Text

नाडीतन्तुजालवंशस्य कन्दादुपरि चतुर्थं पर्वमनाहतम् ॥

Translation

Above the bulb, in the spinal column of the network of neural threads, the fourth segment is Anahata.


Sutra 19

Sanskrit Text

पञ्चमं विशुद्धं कण्ठे ॥

Translation

The fifth is Vishuddha, located in the throat.


Sutra 20

Sanskrit Text

षष्ठमाज्ञा शिरःकुहरे ॥

Translation

The sixth is Ajna, located in the cavity of the head.


Sutra 21

Sanskrit Text

अग्रं सहस्रारम् ॥

Translation

The summit is Sahasrara.


Sutra 22

Sanskrit Text

तद्विना षट्कमाधारचक्राणाम् ॥

Translation

Excluding that (the Sahasrara), there is the group of six base-chakras.


Sutra 23

अत्र वंशे सुषुम्णया प्रवन्ती मूलाधारस्थतेजसः शक्तिः कुण्डलिनी ॥

Translation

In this spine, the power of radiance situated in the Muladhara that flows through the Sushumna is Kundalini.


Sutra 24

Sanskrit Text

तस्या ऊर्ध्वमुख्या आभिमुख्येनाधश्चिन्तनं ध्यानम् ॥

Translation

Meditation consists of contemplating downward, facing her as she looks upward.


Sutra 25

Sanskrit Text

अत्र निमीलितनेत्रो गगनाच्छीर्षम् प्रविशन्तीं शक्तिमादितो भावयेत् ॥

Translation

Here, with eyes closed, one should first visualize the power entering from the sky (space) through the top of the head.


Sutra 26

Sanskrit Text

ततस्तां नाडीचक्रे अवरोहणक्रमेणामूलाधारम् ॥

Translation

Then, follow that power through the system of channels in a descending order down to the Muladhara.


Sutra 27

प्रथमं भावनम् ॥

Translation

First is the stage of visualization/imagination.


Sutra 28

ततोऽनुभवति ॥

Translation

Then follows the actual experience.


Sutra 29

तदा तेजसि प्रतिष्ठां विन्देत् ॥

Translation

Then, one attains establishment in the Radiance.


Sutra 30

अनन्तरं स्वरचितिनिष्ठा यथापूर्वम् ॥

Translation

Thereafter, one attains establishment in the consciousness of sound, as described before.


षष्ठः खण्डः (Section Six)


Sutra 1

Sanskrit Text

अमृतया प्रवन्ती धीर्ज्ञानशक्तिः ॥

Translation

The power of wisdom and knowledge flows through the Amrita channel.


Sutra 2

Sanskrit Text

तां शिरस्त आज्ञाचक्रमवतारयेत् ॥

Translation

One should cause that power to descend from the head to the Ajna chakra.


Sutra 3

Sanskrit Text

ततो विशुद्धम् ॥

Translation

Then to the Vishuddha.


Sutra 4

Sanskrit Text

ततो हृदयस्य दक्षिणतः पुरोभागस्थं दहरम् ॥

Translation

Then to the ‘Dahara’ (the subtle inner space) located in the front-right part of the heart.


Sutra 5

Sanskrit Text

तत्र निष्ठा चितिनिष्ठातो नातिरिच्यते ॥

Translation

Establishment there is not different from establishment in Consciousness.


Sutra 6

Sanskrit Text

सोऽयं तपसोऽन्यः प्रकारः ॥

Translation

This is another method of penance (tapas).


Sutra 7

Sanskrit Text

दृष्टिं विषयेभ्यः समाहृत्य दृग्दृश्ययोरन्तराले स्थापयेत् ॥

Translation

Withdrawing the vision (attention) from objects, one should establish it in the interval between the seer and the seen.


Sutra 8

अनन्तरं केवले द्रष्टरि प्रतिष्ठामभ्यसेत् ॥

Translation

Thereafter, one should practice establishment in the pure Seer alone.


Sutra 9

Sanskrit Text

कथं पश्यामीति तत्र प्रथमो विचारः ॥

Translation

“How do I see?”—this is the first inquiry therein.


Sutra 10

Sanskrit Text

कः पश्यतीति द्वितीयः ॥

Translation

“Who sees?”—this is the second inquiry.


Sutra 11

एवमहं पश्यामीति निष्ठा ॥

Translation

“Thus, I see”—this is the state of establishment.


Sutra 12

Sanskrit Text

अज्ञानिनो दर्शने विषयस्य प्राधान्यम् ॥

Translation

In the vision of the ignorant, the object is predominant.


Sutra 13

Sanskrit Text

द्रष्टा दर्शनं चाध्याह्रियेते तत्र प्रमितेर्वाक्यत्वे ॥

Translation

The Seer and the act of seeing are mentally supplied (inferred) when the cognition takes the form of a sentence (a complete propositional statement).


Sutra 14

Sanskrit Text

योगिनो दर्शने द्रष्टुः प्राधान्यम् ॥

Translation

In the vision of the Yogi, the Seer is predominant.


Sutra 15

Sanskrit Text

विषयो दर्शनं चाध्याह्रियेते तत्र प्रमितेर्वाक्यत्वे ॥

Translation

(In the vision of the Yogi), the object and the act of seeing are mentally supplied (inferred) there, so that the cognition attains the completeness of a sentence.


Sutra 16

Sanskrit Text

दृष्टौ वा प्रतितिष्ठेत् ॥

Translation

Or, one should remain established in the seeing itself.


Sutra 17

Sanskrit Text

तदा दर्शने स्वस्य प्राधान्यम् ॥

Translation

Then, in that seeing, the Self (the Subject) is predominant.


Sutra 18

Sanskrit Text

विषयो द्रष्टा चाध्याह्रियेते तत्र प्रमितेर्वाक्यत्वे ॥

Translation

(In the state where the act of seeing is direct), the object and the seer are mentally supplied (inferred) there, so that the cognition attains the completeness of a sentence.


Sutra 19

Sanskrit Text

द्रष्टरि दृष्टौ वा प्रतिष्ठितः कण्ठायावतरेत् ॥

Translation

Established in the Seer or in the Vision, one should descend to the throat.


Sutra 20

Sanskrit Text

अथ हृदयायेत्यपरः प्रकारस्तपसः ॥

Translation

Now, “unto the heart” is another method of penance (tapas).


Sutra 21

Sanskrit Text

तत्र क्षेत्रज्ञे तच्चितिशक्तौ वा प्रतिष्ठां विन्देत् ॥

Translation

There, one should find establishment in the Knower of the Field (Soul) or in that Power of Consciousness.


Sutra 22

तन्महाभाग्यं प्राग्वत् ॥

Translation

The great glory of that state is as described previously.


सप्तमः खण्डः (Section Seven)


Sutra 1

Sanskrit Text

केवलो विचारोऽन्यः पन्थाः ॥

Translation

Pure inquiry alone is another path.


Sutra 2

Sanskrit Text

अहम्स्फूर्त्यन्वेषणविधया ॥

Translation

This is done by the method of searching for the “I-pulse” (Aham-sphurti).


Sutra 3

Sanskrit Text

अहम्स्फूर्तौ प्रत्यग्गत्यावतरणेन वा ॥

Translation

In the I-pulse, either by an inward-turned movement or by the process of descent, (one reaches the Heart).


Sutra 4

Sanskrit Text

विचारयन्ननारतं तज्जेन ओष्मणा हृदयस्य नाडीबन्धं शिथिलयेत् ॥

Translation

Inquiring incessantly, one should loosen the knot of the heart’s channels by the heat born of that (inquiry).


Sutra 5

Sanskrit Text

तत्त्वज्ञानेनाभिमानबन्धम् ॥

Translation

Through the knowledge of the Truth, the knot of egoistic identification is loosened.


Sutra 6

Sanskrit Text

अत्र च निष्ठा महाभाग्ये प्राग्वन्निष्ठा महाभाग्ये प्राग्वत् ॥

Translation

And here, the establishment in the state of supreme fortune is the same as the establishment described before; in the supreme fortune, it is as before.

॥ इति श्रीभगवन्महर्षिरमणान्तेवासिनो वासिष्ठस्य नरसिंहसूनोः गणपतेः कृतिः राजयोगसारसूत्रं समाप्तम् ॥


Translation

Thus ends the Raja Yoga Sara Sutram, a work of Ganapati (Vasistha Ganapati Muni), son of Narasimha and disciple of the holy Bhagavan Maharshi Ramana.
