सप्तमः खण्डः (Seventh Section)

Sutra 1

Sanskrit Text

अथ योगाः ॥ १ ॥

Translation

Now begins the exposition of the various Yogas.


Sutra 2

Sanskrit Text

फलापेक्षारहितं सत्कर्म कर्मयोगः ॥ २ ॥

Translation

Good actions performed without expectation of rewards is Karma Yoga.


Sutra 3

Sanskrit Text

मनसा मन्त्रस्य ध्यानं मन्त्रयोगः ॥ ३ ॥

Translation

Meditation upon a mantra within the mind is Mantra Yoga.


Sutra 4

Sanskrit Text

वायोर्निग्रहो हठयोगः ॥ ४ ॥

Translation

The control of the breath (Prana) is Hatha Yoga.


Sutra 5

Sanskrit Text

चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधो राजयोगः ॥ ५ ॥

Translation

The cessation of the fluctuations of the mind is Raja Yoga.


Sutra 6

Sanskrit Text

आत्मविचारणं ज्ञानयोगः ॥ ६ ॥

Translation

Self-inquiry (investigating the nature of the Self) is Jnana Yoga.


Sutra 7

Sanskrit Text

अहंवृत्तिमूलान्वेषणमेवात्मविचारणं न शास्त्रचर्चा ॥ ७ ॥

Translation

Searching for the source of the “I-thought” is truly Self-inquiry, not mere scriptural discussion/debate.


Sutra 8

Sanskrit Text

आत्मसमर्पणं प्रपत्तियोगः ॥ ८ ॥

Translation

Total self-surrender (to the Divine) is Prapatti Yoga.


सप्तमः खण्डः (Seventh Section - Continued)

Sutra 9

Sanskrit Text

राजयोगप्रपत्तियोगपुरस्सरं नित्यं प्रवन्त्याः शक्तेः महता मौनेनात्मन्यवकाशं दत्त्वा पञ्चानां च कोशानामनवरतं चिदग्निना संस्करणं अमृतयोगः ॥ ९ ॥

Translation

Preceded by Raja Yoga and Prapatti Yoga, Amrita Yoga is the continuous refinement (purification) of the five sheaths (koshas) by the fire of consciousness (chidagni), by giving space within the self through Great Silence to the eternally flowing Power (Shakti).


Sutra 10

अस्यां कल्पसेवेत्येवम् ॥ १० ॥

Translation

In this way, one should practice [this] discipline.


अष्टमः खण्डः (Eighth Section)

अथामृतयोगे महामौनसाधिका विद्याः (Now, the meditative disciplines that facilitate Great Silence in Amrita Yoga)

Sutra 1

Sanskrit Text

अथामृतयोगे महामौनसाधिका विद्याः ॥ १ ॥

Translation

Now begin the Vidyas (wisdom-practices) that accomplish Great Silence within Amrita Yoga.


Sutra 2

Sanskrit Text

वेद्यं संप्रसादेन तिष्ठेत् सा भूमविद्या ॥ २ ॥

Translation

To remain established in the “to-be-known” (the Infinite) with perfect clarity/serenity is Bhuma-vidya.


Sutra 3

Sanskrit Text

प्रणवं ध्यायेत् कण्ठकुहरे स्थिरमनाः सोद्गीथविद्या ॥ ३ ॥

Translation

Meditating on the Pranava (OM) in the hollow of the throat with a steady mind is Udgitha-vidya.


Sutra 4

Sanskrit Text

गत्यागतिप्रत्यवेक्षणद्वाराप्राणवायुं ध्यायेत् सा संवर्गविद्या ॥ ४ ॥

Translation

Meditating on the vital breath (Prana) by observing its coming and going (inhalation/exhalation) is Samvarga-vidya.


Sutra 5

Sanskrit Text

तीव्रनिर्विषयालोचनं ऊष्माणं ध्यायेत् सा ज्योतिर्विद्या ॥ ५ ॥

Translation

Meditating on the internal heat/glow through intense, objectless contemplation is Jyoti-vidya.


Sutra 6

Sanskrit Text

रसं ध्यायेत् जिह्वायां स्थिरमना सा वारुणी विद्या ॥ ६ ॥

Translation

Meditating on the “essence” (or taste) on the tongue with a steady mind is Varuni-vidya.


Sutra 7

Sanskrit Text

उपजिह्वायामिन्द्रयोनिविद्या ॥ ७ ॥

Translation

[Meditating] on the uvula (the “root of the tongue”) is Indrayoni-vidya.


Sutra 8

Sanskrit Text

हृदं द्वारं वा ध्यायेत् सोपकोसलविद्या ॥ ८ ॥

Translation

Meditating on the heart or the “gateway” is Upakosala-vidya.
