Verse 14.3: The Two Faces of Reality

Sanskrit

तामाहुर्जगदंबां गौरीं केचित् परे कालीम् ।
सा गौरी महिलातनुरम्बरतनुरुच्यते काली ॥ १४.३॥

Word-by-word

ताम्-आहुः (They call Her) जगदम्बाम् (Mother of the world) गौरीम् (Gauri) केचित् (some); परे (others) कालीम् (Kali). सा गौरी (That Gauri) महिला-तनुः (of a woman’s body/form); अम्बर-तनुः (clothed in space/infinite) उच्यते (is called) काली (Kali).

Translation

Some call the Mother of the world “Gauri,” while others call Her “Kali.” Gauri is She who takes the graceful form of a woman, while Kali is She whose “body” is the infinite expanse of space itself.


Verse 14.4 & 14.5: The Physics of Time and Space

Sanskrit

पाचकशक्तेः काल्याः केवललिङ्गेन भिद्यते कालः ।
यत्पाकतो गभीराद्भुवने सर्वेऽपि परिणामाः ॥ १४.४॥

सर्वभुवनाश्रयत्वात् काली नाम्ना दिगन्येन ।
लोके तु व्यवहरणं विदुषां दिक्कालयोर्भाक्तम् ॥ १४.५॥

Translation

Verse 14.4: Kāla (Time) is merely the masculine linguistic marker for Kālī, the Power of Transformation (Pachaka-shakti). It is through Her “deep cooking” (maturation/evolution) that all changes and results in this universe occur.

Verse 14.5: Because She supports all the worlds, She is also known as Dik (Space/Direction). For the wise, the worldly distinction between “Space” and “Time” is purely metaphorical; both are essentially Her.


Verse 14.6: The Daughter of Daksha vs. The Infinite

Sanskrit

दिगदितिरगाद्यखण्डा परिणमयित्री स्मृता काली ।
दक्षस्यैका दुहिता सा द्वे गुणभेदमुग्धदृशाम् ॥ १४.६॥

Translation

Space is the undivided Aditi; the Transformer is remembered as Kali. Although She is the one daughter of Daksha (Sati/Parvati), She appears as two distinct entities to those whose vision is clouded by the differentiation of qualities (Gunas).


Verse 14.7 & 14.8: The Inner Awakening (Kundalini)

Sanskrit

देहे देहे सेयं कुण्डलिनी नाम जगदम्बा ।
सा स्वपिति संसृतिमतां युञ्जानानां प्रबुद्धा स्यात् ॥ १४.७॥

मूलाधारादग्निर्ज्वलति शिरस्तः शशी द्रवति ।
कुण्डलिनीमयि मन्ये वीणाशयनात्प्रबुद्धेयम् ॥ १४.८॥

Translation

Verse 14.7: In every single body, this very same Mother of the World resides as Kundalini. She sleeps in those bound to worldly existence but becomes wide awake in those who practice Yoga (Yunjana).

Verse 14.8: When She awakens, Fire (Agni) blazes up from the Muladhara and the Moon (Soma) flows from the head. I believe Kundalini has now risen from Her “bed of the Veena” (the spinal column).


Verse 14.10

Sanskrit

एतावग्नीषोमौ ज्वालभिश्चन्द्रिकाभिरपि ।
आवृणुतस्तनुमनयोर्व्यक्तित्वं मे पशुर्भवतु ॥ १४.१०॥

Word-by-word

एतौ (These two) अग्नी-षोमौ (Agni/Fire and Soma/Moon) ज्वालभिः (with flames) चन्द्रिकाभिः-अपि (and with moonbeams/cool rays); आवृणतः (envelop/cover) तनुम् (the body); अनयोः (of these two) व्यक्तित्वम् (individuality/ego) मे (my) पशुः (sacrificial animal) भवतु (let it become).

Translation

These two—Fire and Moon—envelop my body with their flames and cool moonbeams. Let my sense of individuality become the sacrificial animal offered into the union of these two forces.


Verse 14.11

Sanskrit

अग्निस्त्वं सोमस्त्वं त्वमधो ज्वलसि द्रवस्यूर्ध्वम् ।
अमृतमनयोः फलं त्वं तस्य च भोक्त्री चिदम्ब त्वम् ॥ १४.११॥

Word-by-word

अग्निः-त्वम् (You are the Fire) सोमः-त्वम् (You are the Soma); त्वम् (You) अधः (below) ज्वलसि (blaze/shine) द्रवसि (flow/melt) ऊर्ध्वम् (above); अमृतम् (Nectar) अनयोः (of these two) फलम् (fruit) त्वम् (You are); तस्य (of that nectar) (and) भोक्त्री (the Enjoyer) चित्-अम्ब (O Mother of Consciousness) त्वम् (You are).

Translation

You are the Fire and You are the Moon. You blaze below (as Kundalini) and flow above (as the nectar of the crown). You are the result of their union—the Nectar of Immortality—and You, O Mother of Consciousness, are also the one who enjoys that Nectar.


Verse 14.19: The Master Source

सङ्कल्पानां वाचामनुभूतीनां च यन्मूलम् ।
यत्र प्राणो बद्धस्तल्लक्ष्यं देवि ते रूपम् ॥ १४.१९॥

Word-by-word

सङ्कल्पानाम् (saṅkalpānām): of intentions/thoughts; वाचाम् (vācām): of speech; अनुभूतीनाम् (anubhūtīnām): of experiences; (ca): and; यत्-मूलम् (yat-mūlam): which is the root; यत्र (yatra): where; प्राणः (prāṇaḥ): the life-breath/energy; बद्धः (baddhaḥ): is tied/bound; तत्-लक्ष्यम् (tat-lakṣyam): that target/focal point; देवि (devi): O Goddess; ते (te): Your; रूपम् (rūpam): form.

Translation

O Goddess, that root-source from which all thoughts, speech, and experiences arise, and where the Prana (life-energy) is firmly anchored—that very target is Your true Form.


Verse 14.20: The Vision of Ramana Maharshi

नैसर्गिकस्ववृत्तेरहङ्कृतेर्ममूलमन्विष्य ।
त्वां किल साक्षात्कुरुते रमणमहर्षेरियं दृष्टिः ॥ १४.२०॥

Word-by-word

नैसर्गिक-स्ववृत्तेः (naisargika-svavṛtteḥ): of the natural/innate activity; अहङ्कृतेः (ahaṅkṛteḥ): of the ego/I-thought; मूलम् (mūlam): the root; अन्विष्य (anviṣya): having searched/investigated; त्वाम् (tvām): You; किल (kila): indeed/surely; साक्षात्-कुरुते (sākṣāt-kurute): one realizes/sees directly; रमण-महर्षेः (ramaṇa-maharṣeḥ): of Ramana Maharshi; इयम् (iyam): this; दृष्टिः (dṛṣṭiḥ): vision/method.

Translation

Investigating the root of the natural “I-thought” that constantly arises within—this is the vision of Ramana Maharshi, through which one surely realizes You directly.
