Verse 38.3

दहरसरोजाद् द्विदलसरोजं द्विदलसरोजाद्दशशतपत्रम्
दशशतपत्राद्देहं देहात् सकलं विषयं संविद् व्रजति ॥ ३८.३॥

Translation

Consciousness travels from the heart-lotus to the two-petaled lotus (between the eyebrows), from there to the thousand-petaled lotus (at the crown), then into the physical body, and finally out to all the objects of the world.


Verse 38.6

दशशतपत्राद् द्विदलसरोजं द्विदलसरोजाद्दहरसरोजम् ।
अवतरतीशा येषामेषा तेषामन्तर्नित्या निष्ठा ॥ ३८.६॥

Word-by-word

दश-शत-पत्राद् (From the thousand-petaled lotus/Sahasrara) द्विदल-सरोजम् (to the two-petaled lotus/Ajna) द्विदल-सरोजाद् (from the two-petaled lotus) दहर-सरोजम् (to the heart-lotus) अवतरति (descends) ईशा (the Goddess/Consciousness) येषाम् (for those) एषा (this [Consciousness]) तेषाम् (for them) अन्तर्-नित्या (eternal/continuous inward) निष्ठा (steadfastness/abidance).

Translation

For those in whom Consciousness descends from the thousand-petaled lotus to the two-petaled lotus, and from the two-petaled lotus to the heart-lotus, there is an eternal and continuous inward abidance (in the Self).


Verse 38.8

Sanskrit

दशशतपत्रे शक्तिर्ललिता वज्रवती सा द्विदलसरोजे ।
दहराम्बुरुहे भद्रा काली मूलाधारे भैरव्याख्या ॥ ३८.८॥

Translation

The Shakti is known as Lalita in the thousand-petaled lotus (Sahasrara), as Vajravati in the two-petaled lotus (Ajna), as Bhadra Kali in the heart-lotus (Hridaya), and as Bhairavi in the Muladhara.


Verse 38.9

खेलति ललिता द्रवति स्थाने छिन्नग्रन्थिनि राजत्यैन्द्री ।
बद्धकवाटे भद्रा काली तपसा ज्वलिते भैरव्याख्या ॥ ३८.९॥

खेलति (Plays) ललिता (Lalita) द्रवति (flows/melts) स्थाने (in that place) छिन्न-ग्रन्थिनि (where the knot is severed) राजति-ऐन्द्री (Indrani/Vajravati shines) बद्ध-कवाटे (when the door is closed) भद्रा काली (Bhadra Kali) तपसा ज्वलिते (when blazing with penance) भैरवी-आख्या (known as Bhairavi).

Translation

Lalita plays (as bliss) in the place where the knots are severed; Indrani (Vajravati) shines in the brow; Bhadra Kali remains when the door (of the heart) is yet closed; and She is called Bhairavi when blazing with the fire of tapas (in the Muladhara).


Verse 38.12

पिण्डे चाण्डे जङ्गमसारः शुद्धा प्रज्ञा सुन्दर्युक्ता ।
विषयदशायां देशीभूता सेयं भुवनेश्वर्याख्याता ॥ ३८.१२॥

Word-by-word

पिण्डे (In the body) च-अण्डे (and in the universe) जङ्गम-सारः (the essence of the moving) शुद्धा प्रज्ञा (Pure Consciousness) सुन्दरी-उक्ता (is called Sundari) विषय-दशायाम् (in the state of objects/external world) देशी-भूता (manifested in space/locality) सा-इयम् (this very one) भुवनेश्वरी-आख्याता (is celebrated as Bhuvaneshwari).

Translation

Pure Consciousness, which is the essence of all that moves in the individual body and the universe, is called Sundari; and in the state of external manifestation among objects, She is celebrated as Bhuvaneshwari.


Verse 38.13

Sanskrit

शून्यप्रख्या या चिल्लीना प्रलये ब्रह्मणि जन्मिषु सुप्तौ
कबलितसकलब्रह्माण्डां तां कवयः श्रेष्ठां ज्येष्ठामाहुः ॥ ३८.१३॥

Word-by-word

शून्य-प्रख्या (Resembling a void) या (who) चित्-लीना (merged in consciousness) प्रलये (in cosmic dissolution) ब्रह्मणि (in Brahman) जन्मिषु (in living beings) सुप्तौ (in deep sleep) कबलित-सकल-ब्रह्माण्डाम् (having swallowed the entire universe) ताम् (her) कवयः (the poets/sages) श्रेष्ठाम् (the highest) ज्येष्ठा-आहुः (call Jyeshtha/Dhumavati).

Translation

That Power which remains merged in Brahman during cosmic dissolution, or in the deep sleep of living beings—appearing as a void after swallowing the entire universe—is called Jyeshtha (Dhumavati) by the wise.


Verse 38.14

Sanskrit

निद्राविस्मृतिमोहालस्यप्रविभेदैस्सा भवमग्नेषु ।
एषैव स्याद्युञ्जानेषु ध्वस्तविकल्पः कोऽपि समाधिः ॥ ३८.१४॥

Word-by-word

निद्रा-विस्मृति-मोह-आलस्य-प्रविभेदैः (Through the divisions of sleep, forgetfulness, delusion, and laziness) सा (she) भव-मग्नेषु (in those drowned in worldly existence) एषा-एव (this very one) स्यात् (becomes) युञ्जानेषु (in those practicing Yoga) ध्वस्त-विकल्पः (where thoughts are destroyed) कः-अपि (some ineffable) समाधिः (Samadhi).

Translation

In those drowned in worldly life, this Power manifests as sleep, forgetfulness, delusion, and laziness; but in those practicing Yoga, she becomes that ineffable Samadhi where all mental constructs are destroyed.


Verse 38.15

Sanskrit

ऐन्द्री शक्तिर्व्यक्तबला चेद् भिन्ने स्यातां शीर्षकपाले ।
तस्मादेतां चतुरवचस्काः परिभाषन्ते छिन्नशिरस्काम् ॥ ३८.१५॥

ऐन्द्री शक्तिः (The power of Indra/Vajravati) व्यक्त-बला (with manifested force) चेत् (if) भिन्ने (pierced/split) स्याताम् (should be) शीर्ष-कपाले (the skull of the head) तस्मात्-एताम् (therefore her) चतुर-वचस्काः (the skillful in speech) परिभाषन्ते (define/call) छिन्न-शिरस्काम् (the severed-headed one/Chinnamasta).

Translation

When the Indrani Power manifests with full force and the skull is (metaphorically) pierced at the crown, the wise describe her as Chinnamasta (the Goddess with the severed head).


Verse 38.16

Sanskrit

भवति परा वाग्भैरव्याख्या पश्यन्ती सा कथिता तारा ।
रसनिधिमाप्ता जिह्वारङ्गं मातङ्गीति प्रथिता सेयम् ॥ ३८.१६॥

Word-by-word

भवति (She becomes) परा वाक् (the supreme word/transcendental speech) भैरवी-आख्या (known as Bhairavi) पश्यन्ती (the visionary word) सा (she) कथिता (called) तारा (Tara) रस-निधिम् (the treasure of essence/taste) आप्ता (having reached) जिह्वारङ्गम् (the stage of the tongue) मातङ्गी-इति (as Matangi) प्रथिता (celebrated) सा-इयम् (this very one).

Translation

She is called Bhairavi as the supreme transcendental speech (Para); she is called Tara as the visionary speech (Pashyanti); and she is celebrated as Matangi when she reaches the “stage of the tongue” as the treasure of articulate sound.


Verse 38.17

Sanskrit

पिण्डे चाण्डे स्तम्भनशक्तिर्बगला मात्रस्तव महिमैकः ।
सर्वे व्यक्ताः किरणाः कमला बाह्यो महिमा भुवनाम्ब तव ॥ ३८.१७॥

पिण्डे (In the body) च-अण्डे (and in the universe) स्तम्भन-शक्तिः (the power of stunning/stopping) बगला (Bagala) मात्रः-तव (only your) महिमा-एकः (one glory) सर्वे (all) व्यक्ताः (manifested) किरणाः (rays) कमला (Kamala) बाह्यः (external) महिमा (glory) भुवन-अम्ब (O Mother of the world) तव (your).

Translation

O Mother of the world! Your power of stunning or arresting all movement in the body and the universe is Bagalamukhi; all Your manifested rays (of beauty and abundance) are Kamala, which is Your external glory.


Verse 38.18

Sanskrit

बोधे बोधे बोद्धुश्शक्तिं सङ्कल्पानां पश्चाद्भान्तीम् ।
अविमुञ्चन्यो मनुते धीरो यत्किञ्चिद्वा ललिताऽवति तम् ॥ ३८.१८॥

बोधे-बोधे (In every thought) बोद्धुः-शक्तिम् (the power of the knower) सङ्कल्पानाम्-पश्चात्-भान्तीम् (shining behind all mental resolves) अविमुञ्चन्-यः (he who, without letting go) मनुते (meditates) धीरः (the courageous one) यत्-किञ्चिद्-वा (whatever he may do) ललिता-अवति-तम् (Lalita protects him).

Translation

That courageous one who, in every single thought, meditates without wavering on the Power of the Knower shining behind all mental resolves—whatever he may be doing, Lalita protects him.


Verse 38.19

दृष्टौ दृष्टौ द्रष्टुश्शक्तिं लोचनमण्डलमध्ये भान्तीम् ।
अविमुञ्चन्यः पश्यति धीरो यत्किञ्चिद्वा तमवत्यैन्द्री ॥ ३८.१९॥

दृष्टौ-दृष्टौ (In every sight) द्रष्टुः-शक्तिम् (the power of the seer) लोचन-मण्डल-मध्ये-भान्तीम् (shining in the center of the eyes) अविमुञ्चन्-यः (he who, without letting go) पश्यति (looks) धीरः (the courageous one) यत्-किञ्चिद्-वा (whatever it may be) तम्-अवति-ऐन्द्री (Indrani/Vajravati protects him).

Translation

That courageous one who, in every act of seeing, looks upon the Power of the Seer shining in the center of the eyes without letting go—whatever he sees, Indrani protects him.


Verse 38.20

Sanskrit

प्राणसमीरं विदधानमिमं नित्यां यात्रामत्र शरीरे ।
चरणे चरणे परिशीलयति स्थिरदृष्टिर्यस्तमवति काली ॥ ३८.२०॥

प्राण-समीरम् (The wind of breath) विदधानम्-इमम् (performing this) नित्याम्-यात्राम् (eternal journey) अत्र-शरीरे (here in the body) चरणे-चरणे (at every step/movement) परिशीलयति (observes closely) स्थिर-दृष्टिः-यः (whoever with steady gaze) तम्-अवति-काली (Kali protects him).

Translation

He who, with a steady gaze, closely observes the wind of breath performing its eternal journey here in the body at every single step—him Kali protects.


Verse 38.21

Sanskrit

स्थूलविकारान् परिमुञ्चन्त्या निर्मलनभसि स्थितया दृष्ट्या ।
मज्जन्त्या वा दहराकाशे लोकेश्वर्याः करुणां लभते ॥ ३८.२१॥

Word-by-word

स्थूल-विकारान् (Gross modifications) परिमुञ्चन्त्या (by abandoning) निर्मल-नभसि (in the pure sky) स्थितया-दृष्ट्या (with the gaze fixed) मज्जन्त्या-वा (or by merging) दहर-आकाशे (in the space of the heart) लोकेश्वर्याः (of the Queen of the world) करुणाम्-लभते (attains the grace).

Translation

By abandoning gross modifications and fixing the gaze in the pure sky (of consciousness) or by merging into the space of the heart, one attains the grace of Bhuvaneshwari, the Queen of the world.


Verse 38.22

Sanskrit

सर्वविकल्पान् परिभूयान्तर्विमलं मौनं महदवलम्ब्य ।
केवलमेकस्तिष्ठति योऽन्तस्तं सा ज्येष्ठा कुरुते मुक्तम् ॥ ३८.22॥

Word-by-word

सर्व-विकल्पान् (All mental constructs) परिभूय-अन्तः (overcoming within) विमलम्-मौनम् (pure silence) महत्-अवलम्ब्य (resorting to the Great) केवलम्-एकः-तिष्ठति (remains alone/absolute) यः-अन्तः (whoever within) तम्-सा-ज्येष्ठा (him that Jyeshtha/Dhumavati) कुरुते-मुक्तम् (makes liberated).

Translation

Whoever overcomes all mental constructs within and, resorting to the Great Pure Silence, remains alone in the Self—him Jyeshtha (Dhumavati) makes liberated.


Verse 38.23

Sanskrit

मूले स्थित्या भैरव्याख्यां तारां देवीमुद्गीथेन ।
सेवेतार्यो विदितरहस्यो मातङ्गीं तां गुणगानेन ॥ ३८.२३॥

Word-by-word

मूले-स्थित्या (By staying at the base/Muladhara) भैरवी-आख्याम् (named Bhairavi) ताराम्-देवीम् (Goddess Tara) उद्गीथेन (by the chanting of Om) सेवेत-आर्यः (the noble one should serve) विदित-रहस्यः (knower of the secret) मातङ्गीम्-ताम् (that Matangi) गुण-गानेन (by singing her glories).

Translation

The noble one who knows the secret should serve the one named Bhairavi by staying at the base (Muladhara), the Goddess Tara by the chanting of Om (Udgitha), and Matangi by singing the divine glories.


Verse 38.24

Sanskrit

आसनबन्धादचलो भूत्वा रुद्धप्राणो बगलां भजते ।
अभितो व्याप्तं व्यक्तं तेजः कलयन् कमलाकरुणां लभते ॥ ३८.२४॥

Word-by-word

आसन-बन्धात् (By fixing the posture) अचलः-भूत्वा (becoming motionless) रुद्ध-प्राणः (with breath restrained) बगलाम्-भजते (worships Bagala) अभितः-व्याप्तम् (all-pervading) व्यक्तम्-तेजः (manifested light) कलयन् (perceiving) कमला-करुणाम्-लभते (attains the grace of Kamala).

Translation

By becoming motionless through fixed posture and restraining the breath, one worships Bagala; and by perceiving the manifested light pervading all around, one attains the grace of Kamala.
