Upadesha Sara - Verse 20

Sanskrit

अहमि नाशभाज्यहमहंतया ।
स्फुरति हृत्स्वयं परमपूर्णसत् ॥ २०॥

Transliteration

ahami nāśabhā-jyaham-ahaṁtayā
sphurati hr̥tsvayaṁ parama-pūrṇasat

Translation

Where this ‘I’ notion faded
Now there as I–I, arises
The One, the very Self,
The Infinite.

अहमि मनोमूलवृत्तिरूपे नाशभाजि सति परमपूर्णसत् परमकखण्डं सत्ता हृत् स्वरूपं स्वयम् अहहन्तया अहमहमिति धिया स्फुरति भासते । नन्वहमि नाशं प्राप्ते कुतः पुनरन्यस्याहमः सम्भवः? उच्यते । अहन्ता व्यक्तित्वान्न अतिरिच्यते । तन्मनोगतमात्मगतं च द्विविधं भवति । मनोगतेऽहम्भावे नात्मन्यहम्भावः । तदुपरमे आत्मनो व्यक्तित्वं भासेत । तस्मादनुवृत्तेऽकस्मिन्नहमि नाशं गतेऽन्यदहन्तया स्फुरतीति ॥

Translation: “When the ‘I’ in the form of the root-thought of the mind is destroyed, the Supreme, Infinite Being—the indivisible Reality which is the Heart—shines forth by itself as ‘I-I’. Now, an objection arises: ‘If the I is destroyed, how can another I arise?’ It is said: True ‘I-ness’ (Ahanta) is not the same as personality (ego). That ‘I-ness’ is two-fold: mental and spiritual. When the mental ‘I-thought’ ceases, the spiritual ‘I’ (the Self) is revealed. Thus, when the singular [ego] ‘I’ is destroyed, the other ‘I-ness’ [the Self] pulses forth.”
