Upadesha Sara - Verse 7

Sanskrit

आज्यधारया स्रोतसा समम् ।
सरलचिन्तनं विरलतः परम् ॥ ७॥

Transliteration

ajya-dhāraya srotasā samam
sarala cintanaṃ viralataḥ param

Translation

Better than spells of meditation
Is one continuous current,
Steady as a stream,
Or downward flow of oil.

सरलचिन्तनं सरलं नित्यं सहजं निर्यच्चिन्तनं ध्यानं विरलतः मध्ये मध्ये विच्छिन्नात् परं श्रेष्ठम् । “Steady contemplation” means a natural, constant, and uninterrupted flow of meditation. This is superior (param) to “intermittent” (viralataḥ) meditation, which is broken by other thoughts from time to time.

उत्तमे ध्यानेऽपि सच्छेदादविच्छेदं शस्यत इति यावत् । The point is that even in high-level meditation, an uninterrupted flow is more highly praised than one that is interrupted.
