प्रथमोभागस्य खण्डाः (Sections of the First Part)

This part focuses primarily on the Krama (the sequence of worship) for the primary deities of the tradition.

  • १. दीक्षाविधिः (Dīkṣā-vidhiḥ): The rules and procedures for Initiation.

  • २. श्रीगणनायकपद्धतिः (Śrī-gaṇanāyaka-paddhatiḥ): The methodology of worship for Lord Ganesha (the leader of the hosts).

  • ३. श्रीक्रमः ललिताऽधिकारः (Śrī-kramaḥ Lalitā-adhikāraḥ): The Shri Sequence: The qualification and authority for the worship of Tripura Sundari (Lalita).

  • ४. ललिताक्रमः श्रीचक्रे परचित्यावाहनम् (Lalitā-kramaḥ Śrī-cakre Paracityāvāhanam): The Lalita Sequence: The invocation of the Supreme Consciousness (Parachiti) into the Sri Chakra.

  • ५. ललितानवावरणपूजा (Lalitā-navāvaraṇa-pūjā): The worship of the Nine Enclosures (Avaranas) of the Sri Chakra dedicated to Lalita.

द्वितीयोभागस्य खण्डाः (Sections of the Second Part)

This part deals with the technical and esoteric aspects of the Vidya, including geometry, phonetics, and philosophy.

  • ११. यन्त्रविधानम् (Yantra-vidhānam): The rules and methods for constructing Yantras (sacred geometric diagrams).

  • १२. मन्त्रविधानम् (Mantra-vidhānam): The rules and methods concerning Mantras (sacred sounds).

  • १३. प्रस्तारक्रमः (Prastāra-kramaḥ): The methodology of Prastara (the mathematical expansion/permutation of meters or mantras).

  • १४. नष्टोद्दिष्टकथनम् (Naṣṭoddiṣṭa-kathanam): The explanation of Nashta (lost) and Uddishta (specified) — specific mathematical/mnemonic techniques in Mantra Shastra.

  • १५. कृतनष्टनिरूपणम् (Kṛta-naṣṭa-nirūpaṇam): The analysis and determination of composed and lost verses or syllables.

  • १६. योनिलिङ्गयन्त्ररचनाविधानम् (Yoni-liṅga-yantra-racanā-vidhānam): The specific procedures for constructing the Yoni and Linga Yantras.

  • १७. अङ्गविद्या (Aṅga-vidyā): The knowledge of Ancillary Sciences (subordinate rituals or deities).

प्रथमोभागः प्रथमः खण्डः दीक्षाविधिः

१.१ अथातो दीक्षां व्याख्यास्यामः ॥ अथ (Now) अतः (therefore) दीक्षां (initiation) व्याख्यास्यामः (we shall expound/explain). Translation: Now, therefore, we shall expound the rules of initiation.

१.२ भगवान् परमशिवभट्टारकः श्रुत्याद्यष्टादशविद्याः सर्वाणि दर्शनानि लीलया तत्तदवस्थाऽऽपन्नः प्रणीय संविन्मय्या भगवत्या भैरव्या स्वात्माभिन्नया पृष्टः पञ्चभिः मुखैः पञ्चाम्नायान् परमार्थसारभूतान् प्रणिनाय ॥ भगवान् (The Lord) परमशिवभट्टारकः (Supreme Lord Shiva) श्रुत्याद्यष्टादशविद्याः (the 18 sciences beginning with Vedas) सर्वाणि (all) दर्शनानि (philosophies) लीलया (effortlessly/by play) तत्तदवस्थाऽऽपन्नः (assuming those various states) प्रणीय (having composed) संविन्मय्या (who is pure consciousness) भगवत्या (by the Goddess) भैरव्या (Bhairavi) स्वात्माभिन्नया (non-different from His own Self) पृष्टः (being asked) पञ्चभिः (with five) मुखैः (faces) पञ्चाम्नायान् (the five traditions) परमार्थसारभूतान् (which are the essence of ultimate truth) प्रणिनाय (revealed). Translation: The Lord, Supreme Shiva, having effortlessly composed all philosophies and the eighteen sciences by assuming various forms, was questioned by Goddess Bhairavi (who is pure consciousness and non-different from Him); He then revealed through His five faces the five traditions which are the essence of the ultimate truth.

१.३ तत्रायं सिद्धान्तः ॥ तत्र (In that/There) अयं (this) सिद्धान्तः (established doctrine). Translation: In this system, this is the established doctrine.

१.४ षट्त्रिंशत्तत्त्वानि विश्वम् ॥ षट्त्रिंशत्-तत्त्वानि (Thirty-six principles/categories) विश्वम् (the universe). Translation: The universe consists of thirty-six fundamental principles.

१.५ शरीरकञ्चुकितः शिवो जीवो निष्कञ्चुकः परशिवः ॥ शरीर-कञ्चुकितः (enveloped by the body/limitations) शिवो (Shiva) जीवो (individual soul) निष्कञ्चुकः (without cloaks/unveiled) परशिवः (Supreme Shiva). Translation: Shiva, when limited by the “cloak” of the body, is the individual soul (Jiva); when free from these veils, He is Supreme Shiva.

१.६ स्वविमर्शः पुरुषार्थः ॥ स्व (Self) विमर्शः (reflection/awareness) पुरुषार्थः (the goal of human life). Translation: Awareness of one’s own true nature is the ultimate goal of human existence.

१.७ वर्णात्मका नित्याः शब्दाः ॥ वर्णात्मका (composed of letters) नित्याः (eternal) शब्दाः (sounds/words). Translation: Sounds in the form of letters (the alphabet of the universe) are eternal.

१.८ मन्त्राणामचिन्त्यशक्तिता ॥ मन्त्राणाम् (of mantras) अचिन्त्य-शक्तिता (possession of inconceivable power). Translation: Mantras possess power that is beyond human comprehension.

१.९ सम्प्रदायविश्वासाभ्यां सर्वसिद्धिः ॥ सम्प्रदाय (tradition) विश्वासाभ्यां (and by faith) सर्व (all) सिद्धिः (attainment/success). Translation: All spiritual success is attained through the lineage of tradition and unwavering faith.

१.१० विश्वासभूयिष्ठं प्रामाण्यम् ॥ विश्वास-भूयिष्ठं (preponderantly based on faith) प्रामाण्यम् (validity/authority). Translation: The validity and authority of this path are founded primarily upon faith.


१.११ गुरुमन्त्रदेवताऽऽत्ममनःपवनानाम् ऐक्यनिष्फालनादन्तरात्मवित्तिः ॥ गुरु-मन्त्र-देवता-आत्म-मनः-पवनानाम् (of Guru, Mantra, Deity, Self, Mind, and Breath) ऐक्य (unity) निष्फालनात् (from the realization/steadying) अन्तरात्म-वित्तिः (knowledge of the inner Self). Translation: The knowledge of the inner Self is attained by realizing the absolute unity of the Guru, Mantra, Deity, Self, Mind, and Breath.

१.१२ आनन्दं ब्रह्मणो रूपं तच्च देहे व्यवस्थितं तस्याभिव्यञ्जकाः पञ्चमकाराः तैरर्चनं गुप्त्या प्राकट्यान्निरयः ॥ आनन्दं (Bliss) ब्रह्मणो (of Brahman) रूपं (nature/form) तत् (that) (and) देहे (in the body) व्यवस्थितं (resides) तस्य (its) अभिव्यञ्जकाः (revealers) पञ्चमकाराः (the five ‘M’s) तैः (with them) अर्चनं (worship) गुप्त्या (secretly) प्राकट्यात् (from publicity) निरयः (downfall/hell). Translation: Bliss is the nature of Brahman and it resides in the body; the five ‘M’s are its revealers; worship using them must be secret, as making it public leads to downfall.

१.१३ भावनादार्ढ्यात् आज्ञासिद्धिः ॥ भावना (contemplation/mental focus) दार्ढ्यात् (from the firmness/intensity) आज्ञा-सिद्धिः (attainment of the power of command). Translation: Through the firmness of contemplation, the power of command (the ability to manifest will) is attained.

१.१४ सर्वदर्शनानिन्दा ॥ सर्व (all) दर्शना (philosophies/systems) अनिन्दा (non-criticism). Translation: One should not criticize any philosophical system or school of thought.

१.१५ अगणनं कस्यापि ॥ अगणनं (not disregarding/not treating as insignificant) कस्यापि (of anyone). Translation: One should not treat anyone with disregard or disrespect.

१.१६ सच्छिष्ये रहस्यकथनम् ॥ सत्-शिष्ये (to a worthy/good disciple) रहस्य (the secret) कथनम् (telling/revealing). Translation: The secrets of the tradition should be revealed only to a worthy disciple.

१.१७ सदा विद्याऽनुसंहतिः ॥ सदा (Always) विद्या-अनुसंहतिः (continuous contemplation or fixation on the Vidya/Knowledge). Translation: There should be constant and continuous contemplation on the Vidya (the sacred mantra and its meaning).

१.१८ सततं शिवतासमावेशः ॥ सततं (Constantly) शिवता-समावेशः (immersion or absorption into the state of Shivahood). Translation: One should constantly remain immersed in the state of being one with Shiva.

१.१९ कामक्रोधलोभमोहमदमात्सर्याविहितहिंसास्तेयलोकविद्विष्टवर्जनम् ॥ काम-क्रोध-लोभ-मोह-मद-मात्सर्य (Lust, anger, greed, delusion, pride, envy) अविहित-हिंसा (unauthorized/prohibited violence) स्तेय (theft) लोक-विद्विष्ट (that which is detested by the world) वर्जनम् (avoidance). Translation: One must avoid lust, anger, greed, delusion, pride, envy, prohibited violence, theft, and any actions that are detested by society.

१.२० एकगुरूपास्तिरसंशयः ॥ एक-गुरु-उपास्तिः (devotion/worship of a single Guru) असंशयः (without doubt). Translation: One should maintain unwavering and doubtless devotion to a single Guru.

१.२१ सर्वत्र निष्परिग्रहता ॥ सर्वत्र (Everywhere) निष्परिग्रहता (state of non-possession or non-attachment). Translation: One should maintain a state of non-attachment and non-possession in all circumstances.

१.२२ फलं त्यक्त्वा कर्मकरणम् ॥ फलं (Fruit/Result) त्यक्त्वा (having abandoned) कर्म-करणम् (performing actions). Translation: One should perform actions while abandoning the desire for their results.

१.२३ अनित्यकर्मलोपः ॥ अनित्य-कर्म (non-essential/optional rites) लोपः (omission/giving up). Translation: One may omit or give up rituals that are not mandatory (Anitya-karma).

१.२४ मपञ्चकालाभेऽपि नित्यक्रमप्रत्यवमृष्टिः ॥ म-पञ्चक-अ-लाभे (in the absence of/non-attainment of the five Ms) अपि (even) नित्य-क्रम (daily ritual sequence) प्रत्यवमृष्टिः (mental contemplation/recollection). Translation: Even if the five ‘M’s (ritual ingredients) are unavailable, one must still perform the daily ritual sequence through mental contemplation.

१.२५ निर्भयता सर्वत्र ॥ निर्भयता (Fearlessness) सर्वत्र (everywhere). Translation: A seeker should be fearless everywhere and in all situations.

१.२६ सर्वं वेद्यं हव्यमिन्द्रियाणि स्रुचः शक्तयोज्वालाः स्वात्मा शिवः पावकः स्वयमेव होता ॥ सर्वं (All) वेद्यं (knowable/objects of knowledge) हव्यम् (offering/oblation) इन्द्रियाणि (the senses) स्रुचः (sacrificial ladles) शक्तयः (powers/energies) ज्वालाः (flames) स्वात्मा (one’s own Self) शिवः (Shiva) पावकः (the fire) स्वयम्-एव (one’s own self indeed) होता (the sacrificer/priest). Translation: All objects of knowledge are the offering, the senses are the ladles, the divine energies are the flames, the Self is Shiva, and the fire is the Self—one is indeed the sacrificer themselves.

१.२७ निर्विषयचिद्विमृष्टिः फलम् ॥ निर्विषय (without an object) चित् (consciousness) विमृष्टिः (reflection/awareness) फलम् (the fruit/result). Translation: The result of this path is the awareness of pure consciousness, free from any external objects.

१.२८ आत्मलाभान्न परं विद्यते ॥ आत्म-लाभात् (than the attainment of the Self) (not) परं (higher/beyond) विद्यते (exists). Translation: There is nothing higher to be attained than the realization of one’s own Self.

१.२९ सैषा शास्त्रशैली ॥ सा (That) एषा (this) शास्त्र-शैली (the style/method of the scripture). Translation: This is the specific style and methodology of this sacred scripture.

१.३० वेश्या इव प्रकटा वेदादिविद्याः । सर्वेषु दर्शनेषु गुप्तेयं विद्या ॥ वेश्या (prostitutes) इव (like) प्रकटा (publicly exposed/manifest) वेद-आदि-विद्याः (sciences starting with the Vedas) | सर्वेषु (in all) दर्शनेषु (philosophies) गुप्ता (hidden) इयं (this) विद्या (knowledge). Translation: Sciences like the Vedas are public (exoteric) like common women; however, this Vidya (Srividya) is hidden (esoteric) within all philosophical systems.

१.३१ तत्र सर्वथा मतिमान् दीक्षेत ॥ तत्र (Therefore/In that) सर्वथा (by all means) मतिमान् (a wise/intelligent person) दीक्षेत (should get initiated). Translation: Therefore, a wise person should, by all means, seek initiation into this path.


१.३२ दीक्षास्तिस्रः शाक्ती शाम्भवी मान्त्री चेति । तत्र शाक्ती शक्तिप्रवेशनात् शाम्भवी चरणविन्यासात् मान्त्री मन्त्रोपदिष्टया सर्वाश्च कुर्यात् ॥ दीक्षाः (initiations) तिस्रः (three) शाक्ती (Shakti-based) शाम्भवी (Shambhavi/Shiva-based) मान्त्री (Mantra-based) (and) इति (thus) | तत्र (among them) शाक्ती (Shakti) शक्ति-प्रवेशनात् (by the infusion of energy) शाम्भवी (Shambhavi) चरण-विन्यासात् (by the placement of the Guru’s feet/grace) मान्त्री (Mantri) मन्त्र-उपदिष्टया (by the instruction of the mantra) सर्वाः (all) (and) कुर्यात् (one should perform/receive). Translation: Initiation is of three types: Shakhti, Shambhavi, and Mantri. Shakti is by the infusion of divine energy; Shambhavi is by the grace/touch of the Guru; Mantri is through the formal instruction of the mantra. One should receive all of them.

१.३३ एकैकां वेत्येके ॥ एक-एकं (one by one) वा (or) इति (thus) एके (some [authorities say]). Translation: Some authorities hold that these initiations can also be given individually.

१.३४ सद्गुरुः क्रमं प्रवर्त्य साङ्गं हुत्वा तरुणोल्लासवान् शिष्यमाहूय वाससा मुखं बद्ध्वा गणपतिललिताश्यामावार्तालीपरापात्र बिन्दुभिस्तमवोक्ष्य सिद्धान्तं श्रावयित्वा ॥ सद्गुरुः (the true Guru) क्रमं (the ritual sequence) प्रवर्त्य (having initiated) साङ्गं (with all its parts) हुत्वा (having performed the fire sacrifice) तरुण-उल्लासवान् (filled with youthful joy) शिष्यम् (the disciple) आहूय (having called) वाससा (with a cloth) मुखं (face/eyes) बद्ध्वा (having bound/blindfolded) गणपति-ललिता-श्यामा-वार्ताली-परा-पात्र-बिन्दुभिः (with drops from the ritual vessels of Ganapati, Lalita, Shyama, Varahi, and Para) तम् (him) अवोक्ष्य (having sprinkled) सिद्धान्तं (the doctrine) श्रावयित्वा (having made him hear). Translation: The Satguru, having performed the full ritual sequence including the fire sacrifice and being filled with divine joy, calls the disciple, blindfolds him, sprinkles him with holy drops from the ritual vessels of the primary deities (Ganapati, Lalita, Shyama, Varahi, and Para), and then recites the secret doctrine to him.

१.३५ तच्छिरसि रक्तशुक्लचरणं भावयित्वा तदमृतक्षालितं सर्वशरीरमलङ्कुर्यात् ॥ तत्-शिरसि (On his [disciple’s] head) रक्त-शुक्ल-चरणं (the red and white feet [of the Guru]) भावयित्वा (having meditated) तत्-अमृत-क्षालितं (washed by that nectar) सर्व-शरीरम्-अलङ्कुर्यात् (should adorn/purify the whole body). Translation: Having meditated on the red and white feet of the Guru upon the disciple’s head, the Guru should visualize the disciple’s entire body being bathed and adorned by the resulting divine nectar.

१.३६ तस्यामूलमाब्रह्मबिलं प्रज्वलन्तीं प्रकाशलहरीं ज्वलदनलनिभां ध्यात्वा तद्रश्मिभिस्तस्य पापपाशान् दग्ध्वा ॥ तस्य-आमूलात्-आ-ब्रह्मबिलं (From his base to the crown/aperture of Brahma) प्रज्वलन्तीं (blazing) प्रकाश-लहरीं (wave of light) ज्वलत्-अनल-निभां (resembling blazing fire) ध्यात्वा (having meditated) तत्-रश्मिभिः-तस्य (by those rays, his) पाप-पाशान् (nooses of sin/karma) दग्ध्वा (having burnt). Translation: Visualizing a blazing wave of light like a pillar of fire rising from the disciple’s base to the crown of the head, the Guru should burn away the disciple’s “nooses of sin” with those radiant rays.


The Ritual Preparation of the Kalasha

१.३७ त्रिकटुत्रिफलाचतुर्जाततक्कोलमदयन्तीसहदेवीदूर्वा भस्ममृत्तिकाचन्दनकुङ्कुमरोचनाकर्पूरवासितजलपूर्णं वस्त्रयुगवेष्टितं नूतनकलशं बालाषडङ्गेनाभ्यर्च्य श्रीश्यामावार्तालीचक्राणि निक्षिप्य तिसृणामावरण मन्त्रैरभ्यर्च्य संरक्ष्यास्त्रेण प्रदर्श्य धेनुयोनी ॥ [Herbs/Minerals List] (Trikatu, Triphala, etc.) जल-पूर्णं (filled with water) वस्त्र-युग-वेष्टितं (wrapped in a pair of cloths) नूतन-कलशं (a new pot) बाला-षडङ्गेन-अभ्यर्च्य (worshipping with the six limbs of the Bala mantra) श्री-श्यामा-वार्ताली-चक्राणि (the Yantras of Shri, Shyama, and Varahi) निक्षिप्य (having placed inside) तिसृणाम्-आवरण-मन्त्रैः-अभ्यर्च्य (worshipping with the enclosure mantras of the three) संरक्ष्य-अस्त्रेण (protecting with the Astra mantra) प्रदर्श्य (having shown) धेनु-योनी (the Dhenu and Yoni mudras). Translation: A new pot filled with water scented with specific herbs and minerals and wrapped in two cloths is worshipped; the Guru places the Yantras of Shri, Shyama, and Varahi inside, performs the enclosure worship, protects it with the Astra mantra, and displays the Dhenu and Yoni mudras.


१.३८ शिवयुक्सौवर्णकर्णिके स्वरद्वन्द्वजुष्टकिञ्जल्काष्टके । क च ट त प य श ळाक्षरवर्गाष्टयुक्ताष्टदले ॥ दिगष्टकस्थित ठं वं चतुरश्रे मातृकायन्त्रे शिष्यं निवेश्य । तेन कुम्भाम्भसा तिसृभिः विद्याभिः स्नपयेत् ॥ शिव-युक्-सौवर्ण-कर्णिके (With a golden center joined with Shiva/Ha) स्वर-द्वन्द्व-जुष्ट-किञ्जल्क-अष्टके (with eight filaments containing vowel pairs) क-च-ट-त-प-य-श-ळ-अक्षर-वर्ग-अष्ट-युक्त-अष्ट-दले (with eight petals containing the eight groups of consonants) दिग्-अष्टक-स्थित-ठं-वं (with the syllables ‘Tham’ and ‘Vam’ in the eight directions) चतुरश्रे (within a square) मातृका-यन्त्रे (in the Matrika Yantra) शिष्यं (the disciple) निवेश्य (having seated) तेन (with that) कुम्भ-अम्भसा (pot water) तिसृभिः (with three) विद्याभिः (Vidyas/Mantras) स्नपयेत् (should bathe). Translation: Having seated the disciple within a Matrika Yantra (a geometric diagram of the alphabet) which has a golden center, eight filaments with vowel pairs, and eight petals for the consonant groups, the Guru should bathe him with the consecrated water while reciting the three primary Vidyas.

१.३९ सदुकुलं सालेपं साभरणं समालं सुप्रसन्नं शिष्यं पार्श्वे निवेश्य मातृकां तदङ्गे विन्यस्य विमुक्तमुखकर्पटस्य तस्य हस्ते त्रीन् प्रथमसिक्तान् चन्दनोक्षितान् द्वितीयखण्डान् पुष्पखण्डान्निक्षिप्य तत्त्वमन्त्रैर्ग्रासयित्वा दक्षिणकर्णे बालमुपदिश्य पश्चादिष्टमनुं वदेत् ॥

सदुकुलं (with fine silk garments) सालेपं (with sacred ointments) साभरणं (with ornaments) समालं (with garlands) सुप्रसन्नं (serene/cheerful) शिष्यं (disciple) पार्श्वे (at the side) निवेश्य (having seated) मातृकां (the alphabet/Matrika) तद्-अङ्गे (on his body) विन्यस्य (having performed Nyasa/placement) विमुक्त-मुख-कर्पटस्य (of him whose face-cloth has been removed) तस्य (his) हस्ते (in hand) त्रीन् (three) प्रथम-सिक्तान् (firstly sprinkled) चन्दन-उक्षितान् (smeared with sandalwood) द्वितीय-खण्डान् (bits of the second portion [of ritual food]) पुष्प-खण्डान्-निक्षिप्य (having placed flower bits) तत्त्व-मन्त्रैः-ग्रासयित्वा (making him consume them with Tattva mantras) दक्षिण-कर्णे (in the right ear) बालम्-उपदिश्य (instructing the Bala mantra) पश्चात्-इष्ट-मनुं (afterwards the chosen mantra) वदेत् (should speak).

Translation: Having seated the cheerful disciple (now adorned with silk, ointments, and garlands) at his side, the Guru performs the Matrika Nyasa on the disciple’s body. After removing the blindfold, the Guru places consecrated flower bits and ritual food in the disciple’s hand to be consumed with Tattva mantras. Then, the Guru whispers the Bala mantra into the disciple’s right ear, followed by his chosen (Ishta) mantra.


१.४० ततस्तस्य शिरसि स्वचरणं निक्षिप्य सर्वान् मन्त्रान् सकृद् वा क्रमेण वा यथाऽधिकारमुपदिश्य स्वाङ्गेषु किमप्यङ्गं शिष्यं स्पर्शयित्वा तदङ्गमातृकावर्णादि द्वयक्षरं त्र्यक्षरं चतुरक्षरं वा आनन्दनाथशब्दान्तं तस्य नाम दिशेत् ॥

ततः-तस्य (Then, on his) शिरसि (head) स्व-चरणं (one’s own foot) निक्षिप्य (having placed) सर्वान् (all) मन्त्रान् (mantras) सकृद्-वा (either at once) क्रमेण-वा (or in sequence) यथा-अधिकारम्-उपदिश्य (instructing according to eligibility) स्व-अङ्गेषु (on [the Guru’s] own limbs) किम्-अपि-अङ्गं (any limb) शिष्यं (the disciple) स्पर्शयित्वा (having him touch) तद्-अङ्ग-मातृका-वर्ण-आदि (the letter etc. of that limb) द्वि-अक्षरं (two-syllable) त्रि-अक्षरं (three-syllable) चतुर-अक्षरं-वा (or four-syllable) आनन्दनाथ-शब्द-अन्तं (ending with the word ‘Anandanatha’) तस्य (his) नाम (name) दिशेत् (should bestow).

Translation: Then, placing his foot on the disciple’s head (Shaktipata), the Guru imparts all mantras either at once or in sequence based on eligibility. He then asks the disciple to touch any part of the Guru’s body; based on the Matrika letter associated with that part, the Guru bestows a new spiritual name consisting of two to four syllables and ending with the title “Anandanatha.”


१.४१ बालोपदिष्टेः पूर्वमात्मनः पादुकां षट्तारयुक्तां दद्यात् ॥

बाल-उपदिष्टेः-पूर्वम् (Before the instruction of the Bala mantra) आत्मनः (one’s own) पादुकां (Paduka mantra/formula) षट्-तार-युक्तां (joined with the six Taras/Om-syllables) दद्यात् (should give).

Translation: Prior to the instruction of the Bala mantra, the Guru should impart his own Guru-Paduka mantra, combined with the six Taras.


१.४२ आचाराननुशिष्य हार्दचैतन्यमामृश्य विद्यात्रयेण तदङ्गं त्रिः परिमृज्य परिरभ्य मूर्धन्यवघ्राय स्वात्मरूपं कुर्यात् ॥

आचारान्-अनुशिष्य (Having instructed the codes of conduct) हार्द-चैतन्यम्-आमृश्य (having touched the heart-consciousness) विद्या-त्रयेण (with the three Vidyas) तद्-अङ्गं (his body) त्रिः (three times) परिमृज्य (having wiped/cleansed) परिरभ्य (having embraced) मूर्धनि-अवघ्राय (having smelled the head) स्वात्म-रूपं (a form of one’s own Self) कुर्यात् (should make).

Translation: Having taught the disciple the rules of conduct and touched the consciousness within his heart, the Guru cleanses the disciple’s body three times with the three Vidyas. He then embraces the disciple and kisses/smells the top of his head, effectively transforming the disciple into a reflection of his own divine Self.


१.४३ शिष्योऽपि पूर्णतां भावयित्वा कृतार्थस्तं गुरुं यथाशक्ति वित्तैरुपचर्य विदितवेदितव्योऽशेषमन्त्राधिकारी भवेदिति शिवम् ॥

शिष्यः-अपि (The disciple also) पूर्णतां (fullness/perfection) भावयित्वा (having realized) कृतार्थः (fulfilled) तं (that) गुरुं (Guru) यथा-शक्ति (according to ability) वित्तैः-उपचर्य (having served with wealth/offerings) विदित-वेदितव्यः (having known what is to be known) अशेष-मन्त्र-अधिकारी (eligible for all mantras) भवेत्-इति (becomes thus) शिवम् (auspiciousness/end).

Translation: The disciple, realizing his own fullness and feeling fulfilled, serves the Guru with offerings to the best of his ability. He thus becomes one who knows all that is to be known and gains authority over all mantras. This is the auspicious conclusion.

Meaning: Thus ends the first section titled Deeksha Vidhi (Rules of Initiation) in the Kalpa Sutra composed by the illustrious Parashurama—who was born of Renuka, the destroyer of the wicked Kshatriya clans, the teacher of the Bhargava lineage, the son of Jamadagni, the chief disciple of Lord Mahadeva (Shiva), and the Great Kaula Master.

Second Section | The Methodology of the Lord of Hosts (Ganesha)

२.१ इत्थं सद्गुरोराहितदीक्षः महाविद्याऽऽराधनप्रत्यूहापोहाय गाणनायकीं पद्धतिमामृशेत् ॥ इत्थं (Thus) सद्गुरोः (from a true Guru) आहित-दीक्षः (having received initiation) महाविद्या-आराधन-प्रत्यूह-अपोहाय (for the removal of obstacles in the worship of the Mahavidya) गाणनायकीं (pertaining to Gananayaka/Ganesha) पद्धतिम् (methodology) आमृशेत् (should study/reflect upon). Translation: Thus, having received initiation from a true Guru, the seeker should study the methodology of Ganesha for the removal of obstacles in the worship of the Mahavidya.


२.२ ब्राह्मे मुहूर्ते उत्थाय द्वादशान्ते सहस्रदलकमलकर्णिकामध्यनिविष्टगुरुचरणयुगल विगलदमृतरसविसरपरिप्लुताखिलाङ्गो हृदयकमलमध्ये ज्वलन्तं उद्यदरुणकोटिपाटलमशेषदोषनिर्वेषभूतं अनेकपाननं नियमितपवनमनोगतिर्ध्यात्वा… ॥ ब्राह्मे-मुहूर्ते (in the Brahma Muhurta) उत्थाय (rising) द्वादशान्ते (at the Dvadasanta/crown) सहस्रदल-कमल (thousand-petaled lotus) कर्णिका-मध्य (middle of the pericarp) निविष्ट-गुरु-चरण-युगल (pair of Guru’s feet seated) विगलत्-अमृत-रस-विसर (by the spread of flowing nectar) परिप्लुत-अखिल-अङ्गः (all limbs being drenched) हृदय-कमल-मध्ये (in the heart lotus) ज्वलन्तम् (shining) उद्यत्-अरुण-कोटि-पाटलम् (reddish like ten million rising suns) अशेष-दोष-निर्वेष-भूतम् (the expiation for all faults) अनेक-पाननम् (having many faces) नियमित-पवन-मनोगतिः (having regulated breath and mind) ध्यात्वा (meditating). Translation: Rising in the Brahma Muhurta, the seeker should visualize their limbs drenched in nectar from the Guru’s feet at the crown of the head. Then, with breath and mind controlled, they should meditate on the many-faced Ganesha in the heart, who shines like ten million rising suns and destroys all faults.

२.३ प्रथमं द्वादशवारं मूलमन्त्रेण तर्पयित्वा मन्त्राष्टाविंशतिवर्णान् स्वाहाऽन्तानेकैकं चतुर्वारं मूलं च चतुर्वारं तर्पयित्वा पुनः श्रीश्रीपतिगिरिजागिरिजापतिरतिरतिपतिमहीमहीपति महालक्ष्मीमहालक्ष्मीपति ऋद्ध्यामोदसमृद्धिप्रमोदकान्ति सुमुखमदनावतीदुर्मुखमदद्रवाऽविघ्नद्राविणीविघ्नकर्तृ वसुधाराशङ्खनिधिवसुमतीपद्मनिधित्रयोदश मिथुनेष्वेकैकां देवतां चतुर्वारं मूलं चतुर्वारं च तर्पयेतेवं चतुश्चत्वारिंशदधिकचतुश्शततर्पणानि भवन्ति ॥

प्रथमं (Firstly) द्वादश-वारं (twelve times) मूल-मन्त्रेण (with the root mantra) तर्पयित्वा (having offered water/satisfied) मन्त्र-अष्टाविंशति-वर्णान् (the twenty-eight syllables of the mantra) स्वाहा-अन्तान् (ending in ‘Svaha’) एक-एकं (each one) चतुर्-वारं (four times) मूलं (the root mantra) (and) चतुर्-वारं (four times) तर्पयित्वा (having offered water) पुनः (again). Translation: Firstly, having offered water twelve times with the root mantra, one should offer water four times for each of the twenty-eight syllables of the mantra (ending each with ‘Svaha’) and four times with the root mantra again.

त्रयोदश-मिथुनेषु (among the thirteen couples) एक-एकं (each one) देवतां (deity) चतुर्-वारं (four times) मूलं (the root mantra) चतुर्-वारं (four times) (and) तर्पयेत् (should offer water) एवम् (thus/in this way) चतुश्चत्वारिंशत्-अधिक-चतुश्शत (forty-four plus four hundred / 444) तर्पणानि (water offerings) भवन्ति (there are). Translation: For each deity within these thirteen couples, one should offer water four times and then four times with the root mantra; thus, there are four hundred and forty-four water offerings in total.

अथ यागविधिः - गृहमागत्य स्थण्डिलमुपलिप्य द्वारदेश उभयपार्श्वयोर्भद्रकाल्यै भैरवाय-द्वारोर्ध्वे लम्बोदराय नमः इति अन्तःप्रविश्य आसनमन्त्रेण आसने स्थित्वा प्राणान् आयम्य षडङ्गानि विन्यस्य मूलेन व्यापकं कृत्वा स्वात्मनि देवं सिद्धलक्ष्मीसमाश्लिष्टपार्श्वमर्धेन्दुशेखरमारक्तवर्णं मातुलुङ्गगदापुण्ड्रेक्षुकार्मुकशूलसुदर्शनशङ्ख- पाशोत्पलधान्य-मञ्जरीनिजदन्ताञ्चलरत्न कलशपरिष्कृतपाण्येकादशकं प्रभिन्नकटमानन्दपूर्णमशेषविघ्नध्वंसनिघ्नं विघ्नेश्वरं ध्यात्वा ॥ २.४॥

पुरतो मूलसप्ताभिमन्त्रितेन गन्धाक्षतपुष्पपूजितेन शुद्धेन वारिणा त्रिकोणषट्कोणवृत्तचतुरश्राणि विधाय तस्मिन् पुष्पाणि विकीर्य वह्नीशासुरवायुषु मध्ये दिक्षु च षडङ्गानि विन्यस्य अग्निमण्डलाय दशकलाऽऽत्मने अर्घ्यपात्राधाराय नमः सूर्यमण्डलाय द्वादशकलाऽऽत्मने अर्घ्यपात्राय नमः सोममण्डलाय षोडशकलाऽऽत्मने अर्घ्यामृताय नमः इति शुद्धजलमापूर्य अस्त्रेण संरक्ष्य कवचेनावकुण्ठ्य धेनुयोनिमुद्रां प्रदर्शयेत् ॥ २.५॥

२.४ (Procedure for Ritual Worship and Meditation)

अथ (Now) यागविधिः (ritual procedure) - गृहम् (home) आगत्य (having come) स्थण्डिलम् (ritual platform) उपलिप्य (having smeared/prepared) द्वारदेशे (at the doorway) उभयपार्श्वयोः (on both sides) भद्रकाल्यै (to Bhadrakali) भैरवाय (to Bhairava) - द्वारोर्ध्वे (above the door) लम्बोदराय (to Lambodara) नमः (salutations) इति (thus) अन्तः (inside) प्रविश्य (having entered) आसनमन्त्रेण (with the seat mantra) आसने (on the seat) स्थित्वा (having sat) प्राणान् (breaths) आयम्य (having regulated/Pranayama) षडङ्गानि (six limbs) विन्यस्य (having performed Nyasa) मूलेन (with the root mantra) व्यापकं (all-pervading Nyasa) कृत्वा (having done) स्वात्मनि (within one’s own Self) देवं (the Lord) सिद्धलक्ष्मी-समाश्लिष्ट-पार्श्वम् (whose side is embraced by Siddhalakshmi) अर्धेन्दु-शेखरम् (wearing the crescent moon) आरक्त-वर्णम् (reddish in color) मातुलुङ्ग-गदा-पुण्ड्रेक्षु-कार्मुक-शूल-सुदर्शन-शङ्ख-पाश-उत्पल-धान्य-मञ्जरी-निजदन्त-अञ्चल-रत्न-कलश-परिष्कृत-पाणि-एकादशकम् (possessing eleven hands adorned with a citron, mace, sugarcane bow, trident, Sudarshana disc, conch, noose, lotus, sheaf of grain, his own tusk, and a jeweled pot) प्रभिन्न-कटम् (with temples flowing with ichor/rut) आनन्द-पूर्णम् (filled with bliss) अशेष-विघ्न-ध्वंस-निघ्नम् (intent on destroying all obstacles) विघ्नेश्वरं (the Lord of Obstacles) ध्यात्वा (having meditated).

Translation: Now the ritual procedure: Having returned home and prepared the ceremonial site, one salutes Bhadrakali and Bhairava on either side of the door and Lambodara (Ganesha) above the door. Entering inside and sitting on the consecrated seat, one performs Pranayama and Nyasa. Then, meditating within the Self, one visualizes Lord Vighneshvara: embraced by Siddhalakshmi, wearing a crescent moon, reddish in hue, his eleven hands holding a citron, mace, sugarcane bow, trident, disc, conch, noose, lotus, grain, his tusk, and a jeweled pot; he is blissful, with ichor flowing from his temples, and dedicated to destroying every obstacle.


२.५ (Consecration of the Arghya Vessel)

पुरतः (In front) मूल-सप्त-अभिमन्त्रितेन (consecrated seven times with the root mantra) गन्ध-अक्षत-पुष्प-पूजितेन (worshipped with sandalwood, rice, and flowers) शुद्धेन (with pure) वारिणा (water) त्रिकोण-षट्कोण-वृत्त-चतुरश्राणि (triangle, hexagon, circle, and square) विधाय (having drawn) तस्मिन् (in that) पुष्पाणि (flowers) विकीर्य (having scattered) वह्नीश-असुर-वायुषु (in the SE, NE, SW, and NW corners) मध्ये (in the center) दिक्षु (in the directions) च (and) षडङ्गानि (six limbs) विन्यस्य (having performed Nyasa) अग्नि-मण्डलाय (to the fire-mandala) दश-कला-आत्मने (of ten phases) अर्घ्य-पात्र-आधाराय (to the base of the vessel) नमः (salutations) सूर्य-मण्डलाय (to the sun-mandala) द्वादश-कला-आत्मने (of twelve phases) अर्घ्य-पात्राय (to the vessel) नमः (salutations) सोम-मण्डलाय (to the moon-mandala) षोडश-कला-आत्मने (of sixteen phases) अर्घ्य-अमृताय (to the nectar in the vessel) नमः (salutations) इति (thus) शुद्ध-जलम् (pure water) आपूर्य (having filled) अस्त्रेण (with the Astra mantra) संरक्ष्य (having protected) कवचेन (with the Kavacha mantra) अवकुण्ठ्य (having veiled) धेनु-योनि-मुद्रां (Dhenu and Yoni mudras) प्रदर्शयेत् (should show).

Translation: In front of oneself, using pure water consecrated seven times with the root mantra and worshipped with sandalwood and flowers, one should draw a diagram consisting of a triangle, hexagon, circle, and square. Scatter flowers there and perform Nyasa in the corners, center, and cardinal directions. Salute the Fire Mandala (10 phases) as the base, the Sun Mandala (12 phases) as the vessel, and the Moon Mandala (16 phases) as the nectar within. Fill the vessel with water, protect it with the Astra mantra, shield it with the Kavacha, and display the Dhenu and Yoni mudras.

सप्तवारमभिमन्त्र्य तज्जलविप्रुड्भिरात्मानं पूजोपकरणानि च सम्प्रोक्ष्य तज्जलेन पूर्वोक्तं मण्डलं परिकल्प्य तद्वद् आदिमं संयोज्य तत्रोपादिमं मध्यमं च निक्षिप्य वह्न्यर्केन्दुकलाः अभ्यर्च्य वक्रतुण्डगायत्र्या गणानां त्वेत्यनया ऋचा चाभिमन्त्र्य अस्त्रादिरक्षणं कृत्वा तद्बिन्दुभिस्त्रिशः शिरसि गुरुपादुकामाराधयेत् ॥ २.६॥

पुरतो रक्तचन्दननिर्मिते पीठे महागणपतिप्रतिमायां वा चतुरस्राष्टदलषट्कोणत्रिकोणमये चक्रे वा तीव्रायै ज्वालिन्यै नन्दायै भोगदायै कामरूपिण्यै उग्रायै तेजोवत्यै सत्यायै विघ्ननाशिन्यै ऋं धर्माय ॠं ज्ञानाय ऌं वैराग्याय ॡं ऐश्वर्याय ऋं अधर्माय ॠं अज्ञानाय ऌं अवैराग्याय ॡं अनैश्वर्याय नम इति पीठशक्तीर्धर्माद्यष्टकं चाभ्यर्च्य मूलमुच्चार्य महागणपतिं आवाहयामीत्यावाह्य पञ्चधोपचर्य दशधा सन्तर्प्य मूलेन मिथुनाङ्गब्राह्म्यादीन्द्रादिरूपपञ्चावरणपूजां कुर्यात् ॥ २.७॥

त्रिकोणे देवः तस्य षडस्रस्यान्तराले श्रीश्रीपत्यादिचतुर्मिथुनानि अङ्गानि च ऋद्ध्यामोदादिषण्मिथुनानि षडस्रे मिथुनद्वयं षडस्रोभयपार्श्वयोस्तत्सन्धिष्वङ्गानि ब्राह्मयाद्याः अष्टदले चतुरस्राष्टदिक्ष्विन्द्राद्याः पूज्याः सर्वत्र देवतानामसु श्रीपूर्वं पादुकामुच्चार्य पूजयामीत्यष्टाक्षरीं योजयेत् ॥ २.८॥

एवं पञ्चावरणीमिष्ट्वा पुनर्देवं गणनाथं दशधोपतर्प्य षोडशोपचारैरुपचर्य प्रणवमायाऽन्ते सर्वविघ्नकृद्भयः सर्वभूतेभ्यो हुं स्वाहा - इति त्रिः पठित्वा बलिं दत्वा गणपतिबुद्ध्यैकं बटुकं सिद्धलक्ष्मीबुद्ध्यैकां शक्तिं चाहूय गन्धपुष्पाक्षतैरभ्यर्च्यादिमोपादिममध्यमान् दत्वा मम निर्विघ्नं मन्त्रसिद्धिर्भूयादित्यनुग्रहं कारयित्वा नमस्कृत्य यथाशक्ति जपेत् ॥ २.९॥

यद्यग्निकार्यसम्पत्तिः बलेः पूर्वं विधिवत् संस्कृतेऽग्नौ स्वाहाऽन्तैः श्रीश्रीपत्यादिविघ्नकर्तृपर्यन्तैः मन्त्रैर्हुत्वा पुनरागत्य देवं त्रिवारं सन्तर्प्य योग्यैस्सह मपञ्चकं उररीकृत्य महागणपतिमात्मन्युद्वास्य सिद्धसङ्कल्पः सुखी विहरेत् इति शिवम् ॥ २.१०॥

इति रेणुकागर्भसम्भूत-श्रीदुष्टक्षत्रियकुलान्तक- श्रीभार्गवोपाध्याय-जामदग्न्य-महादेवप्रधानशिष्य- महाकौलाचार्य-श्रीमत्परशुरामकृतौ-कल्पसूत्रे गणनायकपद्धतिर् नाम द्वितीयः खण्डः समाप्तः ॥ २॥

२.६ (Final Consecration and Guru Worship)

सप्तवारम्-अभिमन्त्र्य (consecrating seven times) तज्जल-विप्रुड्भिः (with drops of that water) आत्मानं (oneself) पूजा-उपकरणानि (ritual implements) (and) सम्प्रोक्ष्य (having sprinkled) तज्जलेन (with that water) पूर्वोक्तं (previously mentioned) मण्डलं (diagram) परिकल्प्य (having formed) तद्वद् (in that way) आदिमं (the first/wine) संयोज्य (having joined) तत्र (there) उपादिमं (the subsidiary/meat) मध्यमं (the middle/fish) (and) निक्षिप्य (having placed) वह्नि-अर्क-इन्दु-कलाः (digits of Fire, Sun, and Moon) अभ्यर्च्य (having worshipped) वक्रतुण्ड-गायत्र्या (with the Ganesha Gayatri) गणानां त्वेति अनया ऋचा च (and with the Vedic verse “Gananam Tva”) अभिमन्त्र्य (having consecrated) अस्त्र-आदि-रक्षणं (protection with the Astra mantra etc.) कृत्वा (having done) तद्-बिन्दुभिः (with those drops) त्रिशः (three times) शिरसि (on the head) गुरु-पादुकाम् (the Guru’s feet/mantra) आराधयेत् (should worship).

Translation: Having consecrated the water seven times, sprinkle yourself and the ritual tools with it. Using that water, draw the previously mentioned mandala and add the ritual ingredients (esoterically referred to as the first, second, and middle). Worship the digits of the Fire, Sun, and Moon. Consecrate it again with the Ganesha Gayatri and the Vedic verse “Gananam Tva.” After protecting it with the Astra mantra, sprinkle three drops on your head while worshipping the Guru’s Paduka.


२.७ (The Ganesha Yantra and Pitha Worship)

पुरतः (In front) रक्त-चन्दन-निर्मिते (made of red sandalwood) पीठे (on a pedestal) महागणपति-प्रतिमायां (on an idol of Mahaganapati) वा (or) चतुरस्र-अष्टदल-षट्कोण-त्रिकोण-मये (consisting of a square, eight petals, hexagon, and triangle) चक्रे (in the Yantra) वा (or) तीव्रायै… विघ्ननाशिन्यै (to the nine Shaktis: Teevra, etc.) ऋं धर्माय… ࡡं अनैश्वर्याय (to the eight qualities: Dharma, etc.) नम इति (salutations thus) पीठ-शक्तीः (the pedestal energies) धर्म-आदि-अष्टकं (the eight like Dharma) (and) अभ्यर्च्य (having worshipped) मूलम्-उच्चार्य (uttering the root mantra) महागणपतिम् आवाहयामि (I invoke Mahaganapati) इति आवाह्य (thus having invoked) पञ्चधा (in five ways) उपचर्य (having offered service) दशधा (ten times) सन्तर्प्य (having offered libations) मूलेन (with the root mantra) मिथुन-अङ्ग-ब्राह्मी-आदि-इन्द्र-आदि-रूप-पञ्च-आवरण-पूजां (worship of the five enclosures consisting of couples, limbs, Matrikas, and Dikpalas) कुर्यात् (should perform).

Translation: In front, on a red sandalwood pedestal, or an idol, or a Yantra consisting of a triangle, hexagon, eight petals, and a square, worship the nine Shaktis (Teevra, Jvalini, etc.) and the eight virtues (Dharma, etc.). Invoke Mahaganapati with the root mantra, offer the five standard services, and perform ten libations. Then, perform the worship of the five enclosures (Avaranas).


२.८ (Details of the Five Enclosures)

त्रिकोणे (In the triangle) देवः (the Lord) तस्य षडस्रस्य अन्तराले (in the space within the hexagon) श्री-श्रीपति-आदि-चतुर्-मिथुनानि (the four couples starting with Shri and Shripati) अङ्गानि (the limbs/Angas) (and) ऋद्धि-आमोद-आदि-षण्-मिथुनानि (the six couples starting with Riddhi and Amoda) षडस्रे (in the hexagon) मिथुन-द्वयं (the remaining two couples) षडस्र-उभय-पार्श्वयोः (on both sides of the hexagon) तत्सन्धिषु (in the joints) अङ्गानि (limbs) ब्राह्म्याद्याः (Brahmi etc.) अष्टदले (in the eight petals) चतुरस्र-अष्ट-दिक्षु (in the eight directions of the square) इन्द्राद्याः (Indra etc.) पूज्याः (to be worshipped) सर्वत्र (everywhere) देवतानाम् (of the deities) सु (prefix) श्री-पूर्वं (preceded by ‘Shri’) पादुकाम्-उच्चार्य (uttering the Paduka/mantra) पूजयामि (I worship) इति अष्ट-अक्षरीं (the eight-syllable phrase) योजयेत् (should join).

Translation: Worship the Lord in the center triangle. In the hexagon and its inner spaces, worship the thirteen couples (Shri-Shripati, etc.) and the six limbs (Angas). In the eight petals, worship the Matrikas (Brahmi, etc.), and in the eight directions of the square, worship the world-protectors (Indra, etc.). For all deities, use the eight-syllable formula: “Shri [Name] Padukam Pujayami Namah.”


२.९ (Offerings, Bali, and Japa)

एवं (Thus) पञ्च-आवरणीम्-इष्ट्वा (having worshipped the five enclosures) पुतः (again) देवं (the Lord) गणनाथं (the leader of Ganas) दशधा (ten times) उपतर्प्य (having offered libations) षोडश-उपचारैः (with sixteen services) उपचर्य (having served) प्रणव-माया-अन्ते (ending with Om and Hrim) सर्व-विघ्न-कृद्भ्यः (to all obstacle makers) सर्व-भूत-अभ्यः (to all beings) हुं स्वाहा (Hum Svaha) इति त्रिः पठित्वा (thus having read thrice) बलिं दत्वा (having given the offering) गणपति-बुद्ध्या (identifying with Ganesha) एकं बटुकं (one young boy) सिद्धलक्ष्मी-बुद्ध्या (identifying with Siddhalakshmi) एकां शक्तिं (one woman/girl) च आहूय (and having called) गन्ध-पुष्प-अक्षतैः (with sandalwood, flowers, rice) अभ्यर्च्य (having worshipped) आदिम-उपादिम-मध्यमान् (the three ritual elements) दत्वा (having given) मम निर्विघ्नं मन्त्र-सिद्धिः भूयात् (may my mantra-success be without obstacles) इति अनुग्रहं कारयित्वा (having sought the blessing) नमस्कृत्य (having prostrated) यथा-शक्ति (according to ability) जपेत् (should chant).

Translation: Having finished the Avarana Puja, offer ten more libations and the sixteen standard services. Recite the Bali mantra thrice to appease all beings and obstacles. Invite a boy (representing Ganesha) and a girl (representing Siddhalakshmi), worship them, offer ritual food, and pray: “May my mantra attainment be free of obstacles.” Finally, prostrate and perform the mantra Japa as much as possible.


२.१० (Conclusion and Homa)

यदि (If) अग्नि-कार्य-सम्पत्तिः (there is the performance of fire-sacrifice) बलेः पूर्वं (before the Bali) विधिवत् (according to rules) संस्कृते-अग्नौ (in the consecrated fire) स्वाहा-अन्तैः (ending in Svaha) श्री-श्रीपति-आदि-विघ्नकर्तृ-पर्यन्तैः (up to the couple Vighnakartri) मन्त्रैः हुत्वा (having offered with mantras) पुनः आगत्य (again having returned) देवं त्रिवारं सन्तर्प्य (having offered libations to the Lord thrice) योग्यैः सह (with suitable companions) म-पञ्चकं (the five ‘M’s) उररीकृत्य (having accepted/consumed) महागणपतिम् आत्मनि उद्वास्य (having dissolved Mahaganapati back into the Self) सिद्ध-सङ्कल्पः (one with fulfilled intent) सुखी विहरेत् (should live happily) इति शिवम् (thus auspiciousness).

Translation: If performing a fire sacrifice, do so before the Bali using the mantras of the thirteen couples. Then return, offer libations thrice, share the ritual feast (the five ‘M’s) with worthy companions, and finally withdraw the deity back into your own heart. Thus, with your purpose fulfilled, live in happiness.


इति… द्वितीयः खण्डः समाप्तः ॥ २ ॥ Translation: Thus ends the second section, the Gananayaka Paddhati.

तृतीयः खण्डः श्रीक्रमः ललिताऽधिकारः

एवं गणपतिमिष्ट्वा विधूतसमस्तविघ्नव्यतिकरः शक्तिचक्रैकनायिकायाः श्रीललितायाः क्रममारभेत ॥ ३.१॥

ब्राह्मे मुहूर्ते ब्राह्मणो मुक्तस्वापः पापविलापाय परमशिवरूपं गुरुमभिमृश्य ॥ ३.२॥

मूलादिविधिबिलपर्यन्तं तडित्कोटिकडारां तरुणदिवाकरपिञ्जरां ज्वलन्तीं मूलसंविदं ध्यात्वा तद्रश्मिनिहतकश्मलजालः कादिं हादिं वा मूलविद्यां मनसा दशवारमावर्त्य ॥ ३.३॥

स्नानकर्मणि प्राप्ते मूलेन दत्वा त्रिः सलिलाञ्जलीन् त्रिस्तदभिमन्त्रिताः पीत्वाऽपस्त्रिस्सन्तर्प्य त्रिः प्रोक्ष्यात्मानं परिधाय वाससी ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रूं सः इत्युक्त्वा मार्ताण्डभैरवाय प्रकाशशक्तिसहिताय स्वाहेति त्रिस्सवित्रे दत्तार्घ्यः ॥ ३.४॥

तन्मण्डलमध्ये नवयोनिचक्रमनुचिन्त्य वाचमुच्चार्य त्रिपुरसुन्दरि विद्महे काममुच्चार्य पीठकामिनि धीमहि शक्तिं उच्चार्य तन् नः क्लिन्ना प्रचोदयाद् इति त्रिर्महेश्यै दत्तार्घ्यः शतमष्टोत्तरमामृश्य मनुं मौनमालम्ब्य ॥ ३.५॥

यागमन्दिरं गत्वा कॢप्ताकल्पस्सङ्कल्पाकल्पो वा पीठमनुना आसने समुपविष्टः ॥ ३.६॥

त्रितारीमुच्चार्य रक्तद्वादशशक्तियुक्ताय दीपनाथाय नम इति भूमौ मुञ्चेत् पुष्पाञ्जलिम् ॥ ३.७॥

सर्वेषां मन्त्राणामादौ त्रितारीसंयोगः । त्रितारी वाङ्मायाकमलाः ॥ ३.८॥

पुरतः पञ्चशक्तिचतुःश्रीकण्ठमेलनरूपं भूसदनत्रयवलित्रयभूपपत्रदिक्पत्रभुवनार द्रुहिणारविधिकोणदिक्कोणत्रिकोणबिन्दुचक्रमयं महाचक्रराजं सिन्दूरकुङ्कुमलिखितं चामीकरकलधौतपञ्चलोहरत्नस्फटिकाद्युत्कीर्णं वा निवेश्य ॥ ३.९॥

तृतीयः खण्डः | श्रीक्रमः ललिताऽधिकारः

Third Section | The Shri Sequence: Qualification for Lalita

३.१ एवं गणपतिमिष्ट्वा विधूतसमस्तविघ्नव्यतिकरः शक्तिचक्रैकनायिकायाः श्रीललितायाः क्रममारभेत ॥ एवं (Thus) गणपतिम्-इष्ट्वा (having worshipped Ganesha) विधूत-समस्त-विघ्न-व्यतिकरः (having removed all hosts of obstacles) शक्ति-चक्र-एक-नायिकायाः (of the sole leader of the Shakti-chakras) श्री-ललितायाः (of Shri Lalita) क्रमम् (the sequence) आरभेत (should begin).

Translation: Thus, having worshipped Ganesha and cleared away all obstacles, one should begin the ritual sequence of Shri Lalita, the supreme empress of the assembly of Shaktis.


३.२ ब्राह्मे मुहूर्ते ब्राह्मणो मुक्तस्वापः पापविलापाय परमशिवरूपं गुरुमभिमृश्य ॥ ब्राह्मे मुहूर्ते (In the Brahma Muhurta) ब्राह्मणः (the seeker/Brahmana) मुक्त-स्वापः (freed from sleep) पाप-विलापाय (for the dissolution of sins) परम-शिव-रूपं (having the form of Paramashiva) गुरुम् (the Guru) अभिमृश्य (having reflected upon).

Translation: Waking up during the Brahma Muhurta (pre-dawn), the seeker should meditate upon the Guru as the embodiment of Paramashiva to dissolve all sins.


३.३ मूलादिविधिबिलपर्यन्तं तडित्कोटिकडारां तरुणदिवाकरपिञ्जरां ज्वलन्तीं मूलसंविदं ध्यात्वा तद्रश्मिनिहतकश्मलजालः कादिं हादिं वा मूलविद्यां मनसा दशवारमावर्त्य ॥ मूलादि-विधिबिल-पर्यन्तं (from the Mooladhara to the crown) तडित्-कोटि-कडारां (golden like ten million lightning bolts) तरुण-दिवाकर-पिञ्जरां (reddish like the youthful sun) ज्वलन्तीं (blazing) मूल-संविदं (the Root Consciousness/Kundalini) ध्यात्वा (having meditated) तद्-रश्मि-निहत-कश्मल-जालः (the web of impurities destroyed by its rays) कादिं (Kadi) हादिं (Hadi) वा (or) मूल-विद्यां (the root mantra) मनसा (mentally) दश-वारम्-आवर्त्य (having repeated ten times).

Translation: Meditating on the Root Consciousness (Kundalini) blazing like ten million lightning bolts and the rising sun from the base to the crown, one should see all impurities destroyed by its light and mentally recite the Kadi or Hadi Mula Vidya ten times.


३.४ स्नानकर्मणि प्राप्ते मूलेन दत्वा त्रिः सलिलाञ्जलीन् त्रिस्तदभिमन्त्रिताः पीत्वाऽपस्त्रिस्सन्तर्प्य त्रिः प्रोक्ष्यात्मानं परिधाय वाससी ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रूं सः इत्युक्त्वा मार्ताण्डभैरवाय प्रकाशशक्तिसहिताय स्वाहेति त्रिस्सवित्रे दत्तार्घ्यः ॥ स्नान-कर्मणि (In the act of bathing) प्राप्ते (having arrived) मूलेन (with the root mantra) दत्वा (having given) त्रिः (thrice) सलिल-अञ्जलीन् (handfuls of water) त्रिः-तद्-अभिमन्त्रिताः (thrice consecrated by that) पीत्वा-अपः (having drunk the water) त्रिः-सन्तर्प्य (having offered libations thrice) त्रिः (thrice) प्रोक्ष्य-आत्मानं (having sprinkled oneself) परिधाय (having put on) वाससी (two clothes) ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रूं सः (Hram Hrim Hrum Sah) इति-उक्त्वा (thus having said) मार्ताण्ड-भैरवाय (to Martanda Bhairava) प्रकाश-शक्ति-सहिताय (accompanied by the Power of Light) स्वाहा-इति (Svaha thus) त्रिः-सवित्रे (thrice to the Sun) दत्त-अर्घ्यः (having given water offering).

Translation: While bathing, offer water thrice with the root mantra, drink the consecrated water thrice, perform libations, and sprinkle yourself. After dressing, offer Arghya thrice to the Sun as Martanda Bhairava, accompanied by the power of light, using the mantra “Hram Hrim Hrum Sah Martanda Bhairavaya Svaha.”


३.५ तन्मण्डलमध्ये नवयोनिचक्रमनुचिन्त्य वाचमुच्चार्य त्रिपुरसुन्दरि विद्महे काममुच्चार्य पीठकामिनि धीमहि शक्तिं उच्चार्य तन् नः क्लिन्ना प्रचोदयाद् इति त्रिर्महेश्यै दत्तार्घ्यः शतमष्टोत्तरमामृश्य मनुं मौनमालम्ब्य ॥ तन्-मण्डल-मध्ये (In the center of that [sun] orb) नव-योनि-चक्रम (the nine-triangle wheel) अनुचिन्त्य (having contemplated) वाचम् (Aim) उच्चार्य (uttering) त्रिपुरसुन्दरि विद्महे (we know Tripura Sundari) कामम् (Klim) उच्चार्य (uttering) पीठकामिनि धीमहि (we meditate on the lover of the seat) शक्तिम् (Sauh) उच्चार्य (uttering) तन् नः क्लिन्ना प्रचोदयात् (may that Klinna impel us) इति (thus) त्रिः-महेश्यै (thrice to the Great Goddess) दत्त-अर्घ्यः (having given water offering) शतम्-अष्ट-उत्तरम् (one hundred and eight) आमृश्य (having recited) मनुं (the mantra) मौनम्-आलम्ब्य (having maintained silence).

Translation: Contemplating the Navayoni Chakra (nine triangles) in the sun’s orb, offer Arghya thrice to the Great Goddess using the Tripura Sundari Gayatri (composed with Aim, Klim, and Sauh). Then, recite the mantra 108 times and observe silence.


३.६ यागमन्दिरं गत्वा कॢप्ताकल्पस्सङ्कल्पाकल्पो वा पीठमनुना आसने समुपविष्टः ॥ याग-मन्दिरं (To the ritual temple) गत्वा (having gone) कॢप्त-अकल्पः (properly adorned) सङ्कल्प-अकल्पः वा (or mentally adorned) पीठ-मनुना (with the pedestal mantra) आसने (on the seat) समुपविष्टः (seated well).

Translation: Proceeding to the ritual chamber, whether physically adorned or mentally prepared, sit firmly on the seat while reciting the Pitha mantra.


३.७ त्रितारीमुच्चार्य रक्तद्वादशशक्तियुक्ताय दीपनाथाय नम इति भूमौ मुञ्चेत् पुष्पाञ्जलिम् ॥ त्रितारीम्-उच्चार्य (Uttering the Tritari) रक्त-द्वादश-शक्ति-युक्ताय (accompanied by twelve red shaktis) दीप-नाथाय (to the Lord of Light) नमः (salutations) इति (thus) भूमौ (on the ground) मुञ्चेत् (should release) पुष्प-अञ्जलिम् (a handful of flowers).

Translation: Uttering the Tritari, offer a handful of flowers to the ground for the Lord of Light (Deepanatha), who is accompanied by twelve red Shaktis.


३.८ सर्वेषां मन्त्राणामादौ त्रितारीसंयोगः । त्रितारी वाङ्मायाकमलाः ॥ सर्वेषां (Of all) मन्त्राणाम्-आदौ (at the beginning of mantras) त्रितारी-संयोगः (conjunction with the Tritari). त्रितारी (The Tritari is) वाङ्-माया-कमलाः (Aim, Hrim, and Shrim).

Translation: All mantras must be preceded by the Tritari. The Tritari consists of the syllables Aim (Vach), Hrim (Maya), and Shrim (Kamala).


३.९ पुरतः पञ्चशक्तिचतुःश्रीकण्ठमेलनरूपं भूसदनत्रयवलित्रयभूपपत्रदिक्पत्रभुवनार द्रुहिणारविधिकोणदिक्कोणत्रिकोणबिन्दुचक्रमयं महाचक्रराजं सिन्दूरकुङ्कुमलिखितं चामीकरकलधौतपञ्चलोहरत्नस्फटिकाद्युत्कीर्णं वा निवेश्य ॥ पुरतः (In front) पञ्च-शक्ति-चतुः-श्रीकण्ठ-मेलन-रूपं (formed by the meeting of five Shaktis and four Shrikanthas) भूसदन-त्रय-वलि-त्रय-भूप-पत्र-दिक्-पत्र-भुवन-आर-द्रुहिण-अर-विधि-कोण-दिक्-कोण-त्रिकोण-बिन्दु-चक्र-मयं (composed of three squares, three circles, sixteen petals, eight petals, fourteen triangles, two sets of ten triangles, eight triangles, a triangle, and the central point) महा-चक्र-राजं (the Great King of Wheels/Sri Chakra) सिन्दूर-कुङ्कुमलिखितं (written with vermillion and saffron) चामीकर-कलधौत-पञ्चलोह-रत्न-स्फटिकाद्युत्कीर्णं वा (or engraved on gold, silver, five-metals, gems, crystal, etc.) निवेश्य (having established).

Translation: In front of you, establish the Sri Chakra—the Great King of Wheels—formed by the union of five Shakti triangles and four Shiva triangles. It consists of the three squares (Bhupura), three circles, sixteen petals, eight petals, fourteen triangles, ten outer triangles, ten inner triangles, eight triangles, the central triangle, and the Bindu. It should be drawn with vermillion/saffron or engraved on materials like gold, silver, five-metals, gems, or crystal.

तत्र महाचक्रे अमृताम्भोनिधये रत्नद्वीपाय नानावृक्षमहोद्यानाय कल्पवृक्षवाटिकायै सन्तानवाटिकायै हरिचन्दनवाटिकायै मन्दारवाटिकायै पारिजातवाटिकायै कदम्बवाटिकायै पुष्परागरत्नप्राकाराय पद्मरागरत्नप्राकाराय गोमेधरत्नप्राकाराय वज्ररत्नप्राकाराय वैडूर्यरत्नप्राकाराय इन्द्रनीलरत्नप्राकाराय मुक्तारत्नप्राकाराय मरकतरत्नप्राकाराय विद्रुमरत्नप्राकाराय माणिक्यमण्डपाय सहस्रस्तम्भमण्डपाय अमृतवापिकायै आनन्दवापिकायै विमर्शवापिकायै बालातपोद्गाराय चन्द्रिकोद्गाराय महाश‍ृङ्गारपरिघायै महापद्माटव्यै चिन्तामणिगृहराजाय पूर्वाम्नायमयपूर्वद्वाराय दक्षिणाम्नायमयदक्षिणद्वाराय पश्चिमाम्नायमयपश्चिमद्वारायोत्तराम्नायमयोत्तरद्वाराय रत्नप्रदीपवलयाय मणिमयमहासिंहासनाय ब्रह्ममयैकमञ्चपादाय विष्णुमयैकमञ्चपादाय रुद्रमयैकमञ्चपादाय ईश्वरमयैकमञ्चपादाय सदाशिवमयैकमञ्चफलकाय हंसतूलतल्पाय हंसतूलमहोपधानाय कौसुम्भास्तरणाय महावितानकाय महाजवनिकायै नमः - इति चतुश्चत्वारिंशन्मन्त्रैस्तत्तदखिलं भावयित्वा अर्चयित्वा ॥ ३.१०॥

गन्धपुष्पाक्षतादींश्च दक्षिणभागे दीपान् अभितो दत्त्वा मूलेन चक्रमभ्यर्च्य मूलत्रिखण्डैः प्रथमत्र्यस्रे ॥ ३.११॥

वाय्वग्निसलिलवर्णयुक्प्राणायामैः शोषणं सन्दहनमाप्लावनं च विधाय ॥ ३.१२॥

त्रिः प्राणान् आयम्य ॥ ३.१३॥

३.१० (The 44 Mantras of the Celestial Abode)

तत्र (There) महाचक्रे (in the Great Wheel) अमृताम्भोनिधये (to the ocean of nectar) रत्नद्वीपाय (to the island of gems) नानावृक्षमहोद्यानाय (to the great garden of various trees) कल्पवृक्षवाटिकायै (to the grove of wish-fulfilling trees) सन्तानवाटिकायै (to the Santana grove) हरिचन्दनवाटिकायै (to the Harichandana grove) मन्दारवाटिकायै (to the Mandara grove) पारिजातवाटिकायै (to the Parijata grove) कदम्बवाटिकायै (to the Kadamba grove) पुष्परागरत्नप्राकाराय (to the wall of topaz) पद्मरागरत्नप्राकाराय (to the wall of rubies) गोमेधरत्नप्राकाराय (to the wall of zircon/agate) वज्ररत्नप्राकाराय (to the wall of diamonds) वैडूर्यरत्नप्राकाराय (to the wall of cat’s eye) इन्द्रनीलरत्नप्राकाराय (to the wall of sapphires) मुक्तारत्नप्राकाराय (to the wall of pearls) मरकतरत्नप्राकाराय (to the wall of emeralds) विद्रुमरत्नप्राकाराय (to the wall of corals) माणिक्यमण्डपाय (to the pavilion of rubies) सहस्रस्तम्भमण्डपाय (to the thousand-pillared hall) अमृतवापिकायै (to the pond of nectar) आनन्दवापिकायै (to the pond of bliss) विमर्शवापिकायै (to the pond of self-reflection) बालातपोद्गाराय (to the radiance of the morning sun) चन्द्रिकोद्गाराय (to the radiance of moonlight) महाशृङ्गारपरिघायै (to the great moat of erotic sentiment) महापद्माटव्यै (to the great forest of lotuses) चिन्तामणिगृहराजाय (to the king of houses made of wish-fulfilling gems) पूर्वाम्नायमयपूर्वद्वाराय (to the eastern gate consisting of the eastern tradition) दक्षिणाम्नायमयदक्षिणद्वाराय (to the southern gate) पश्चिमाम्नायमयपश्चिमद्वाराय (to the western gate) उत्तराम्नायमयोत्तरद्वाराय (to the northern gate) रत्नप्रदीपवलयाय (to the circle of jeweled lamps) मणिमयमहासिंहासनाय (to the great throne of jewels) ब्रह्ममयैकमञ्चपादाय (to the one throne-leg of Brahma) विष्णुमयैकमञ्चपादाय (to the throne-leg of Vishnu) रुद्रमयैकमञ्चपादाय (to the throne-leg of Rudra) ईश्वरमयैकमञ्चपादाय (to the throne-leg of Ishvara) सदाशिवमयैकमञ्चफलकाय (to the throne-plank of Sadashiva) हंसतूलतल्पाय (to the bed of swan’s down) हंसतूलमहोपधानाय (to the great pillow of swan’s down) कौसुम्भास्तरणाय (to the saffron-dyed covering) महावितानकाय (to the great canopy) महाजवनिकायै (to the great curtain) नमः (salutations) इति (thus) चतुश्चत्वारिंशन्मन्त्रैः (by the forty-four mantras) तत्तद्-अखिलं (all of those) भावयित्वा (having contemplated) अर्चयित्वा (having worshipped).

Translation: Within that Great Wheel, one should contemplate and worship all forty-four structures—from the Ocean of Nectar and the Island of Gems to the various celestial groves (Kalpavriksha, Kadamba, etc.), the nine walls of precious gems, the ponds of bliss and nectar, and the King of Houses made of Chintamani gems. This includes the four gates representing the four Amnayas (traditions) and the supreme throne whose legs are Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, and Ishvara, and whose seat is Sadashiva, adorned with a canopy, curtains, and a bed of soft down.


३.११ (Placement of Offerings)

गन्ध-पुष्प-अक्षत-आदीन् (Scents, flowers, grains, etc.) (and) दक्षिण-भागे (on the right side) दीपान् (lamps) अभितः (on both sides) दत्त्वा (having given/placed) मूलेन (with the root mantra) चक्रम्-अभ्यर्च्य (worshipping the Chakra) मूल-त्रिखण्डैः (with the three sections of the root mantra) प्रथम-त्र्यस्रे (in the first triangle).

Translation: Placing scents, flowers, and grains on the right side and lamps on both sides, one should worship the Chakra with the root mantra and its three sections in the central triangle.


३.१२ (Purification of the Elements)

वायु-अग्नि-सलिल-वर्ण-युक्-प्राणायामैः (With pranayamas joined with the letters of Air, Fire, and Water) शोषणं (drying) सन्दहनम् (burning) आप्लावनं (drenching/showering) (and) विधाय (having performed).

Translation: Perform the purification of the body by drying it (with the “Air” syllable), burning it (with the “Fire” syllable), and drenching it with nectar (with the “Water” syllable) through the practice of Pranayama.


३.१३ (The Act of Pranayama)

त्रिः (Thrice) प्राणान् (breaths) आयम्य (having regulated).

Translation: Perform Pranayama three times.

मूलविद्यापञ्चदशवर्णान् मूर्ध्नि मूले हृदि चक्षुस्त्रितये श्रुतिद्वयमुखभुजयुगलपृष्ठजानुयुगलनाभिषु विन्यस्य षोढा चक्रे न्यस्यान्यस्य वा ॥ ३.२१॥

Sutra 3.14

Sutra 3.15

प्र तद्विष्णुः स्तवते वीर्येण मृगो न भीमः कुचरो गिरिष्ठाः । यस्योरुषु त्रिषु विक्रमणेष्वधिक्षियन्ति भुवनानि (?) व्विश्वा ॥

त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् । उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात् ॥

Overall Translation: This sutra lists the specific mantras for the 15 Nitya deities (Kameshvari to Chitra) to be worshipped on the 15 vowels within the innermost triangle of the Sri Chakra; the 16th deity, Shodashi, is worshipped at the Visarga (the end point) using the Mula-vidya (Panchadashi mantra).

Overall Translation: Inside the central triangle, the practitioner worships the three lineages of Gurus—the Divine (7), the Perfected (4), and the Human (8)—according to their specific tradition, and finally worships their own Guru on the crown of their head; this process is known as Layanga Pujanam.
