Mantra 7.1.3: Crossing the Ocean of Sorrow

Verse 7.1.3.1

Sanskrit

सोऽहं भगवो मन्त्रविदेवास्मि नात्मवित् ।

Word-by-Word

सः अहम् (That I) | भगवः (O Venerable Sir) | मन्त्र-वित् (knower of mantras/texts) | एव (only) | अस्मि (am) | (not) | आत्म-वित् (knower of the Self).

Translation

“Venerable Sir, I am only a knower of the texts (mantras), not a knower of the Self.”


Verse 7.1.3.2

Sanskrit

श्रुतं ह्येव मे भगवद्दृशेभ्यस्तरति शोकमात्मविदिति ।

Word-by-Word

श्रुतम् (Heard) | हि (indeed) | एव (certainly) | मे (by me) | भगवद्-दृशेभ्यः (from those like your holiness) | तरति (crosses over) | शोकम् (sorrow) | आत्म-वित् (knower of the Self) | इति (thus).

Translation

“I have heard from those like you that the knower of the Self crosses over sorrow.”


Verse 7.1.3.3

Sanskrit

सोऽहं भगवः शोचामि तं मा भगवान्छोकस्य पारं तारयत्विति ।

Word-by-Word

सः अहम् (That I) | भगवः (O Sir) | शोचामि (am grieving) | तम् (that) | मा (me) | भगवान् (Your Holiness) | शोकस्य (of sorrow) | पारम् (to the other side/shore) | तारयतु (help cross over) | इति (thus).

Translation

“I, such as I am, am grieving; please, Sir, help me cross over to the other side of sorrow.”
