Mantra 3.14.1

Verse 3.14.1.1: The Vision of the Whole

Sanskrit

सर्वं खल्विदं ब्रह्म तज्जलानिति शान्त उपासीत ।

Word-by-Word

सर्वम् (All) | खलु (indeed) | इदम् (this) | ब्रह्म (Brahman) | तज्जलान् (origination, dissolution, and life - ja+la+an) | इति (thus) | शान्तः (calm/peaceful) | उपासीत (should meditate).

Translation

All this is indeed Brahman; as it originates, subsides, and breathes in That, one should meditate on It with a calm mind.


Verse 3.14.1.2: The Power of Intention

Sanskrit

अथ खलु क्रतुमयः पुरुषो यथाक्रतुरस्मिँल्लोके पुरुषो भवति तथेतः प्रेत्य भवति स क्रतुं कुर्वीत ॥

Word-by-Word

अथ (Now) | खलु (certainly) | क्रतु-मयः (made of intention/resolve) | पुरुषः (person) | यथा-क्रतुः (as is the resolve) | अस्मिन्-लोके (in this world) | भवति (is) | तथा (so) | इतः प्रेत्य (departing from here) | भवति (becomes) | सः (he) | क्रतुं कुर्वीत (should form a resolve).

Translation

Now, a person consists of their purpose (intent); as is their intent in this world, so they become upon departing from here; therefore, let him form a holy resolve.


Mantra 3.14.2: The Nature of the Self

Verse 3.14.2.1

Sanskrit

मनोमयः प्राणशरीरो भारूपः सत्यसंकल्प आकाशात्मा ।

Word-by-Word

मनोमयः (consisting of mind) | प्राण-शरीरः (body of breath) | भा-रूपः (form of light) | सत्य-संकल्पः (of true resolve) | आकाश-आत्मा (nature of space/ether).

Translation

He consists of the mind, has the vital breath for His body, is of the nature of light, of true resolve, and is like space.


Verse 3.14.2.2

Sanskrit

सर्वकर्मा सर्वकामः सर्वगन्धः सर्वरसः ।

Word-by-Word

सर्व-कर्मा (all-worker) | सर्व-कामः (all-desirer) | सर्व-गन्धः (all-fragrance) | सर्व-रसः (all-tastes).

Translation

He performs all works, possesses all desires, contains all odors, and all tastes.


Verse 3.14.2.3

Sanskrit

सर्वमिदमभ्यत्तोऽवाक्यनादरः ।

Word-by-Word

सर्वम् (all) | इदम् (this) | अभ्यत्तः (encompassing/pervading) | अ-वाकी (without speech) | अ-नादरः (without concern/longing).

Translation

He encompasses all this, is without speech, and is free from longing.


Mantra 3.14.3: The Paradox of Size

Verse 3.14.3.1

Sanskrit

एष म आत्मान्तर्हृदयेऽणीयान्व्रीहेर्वा यवाद्वा सर्षपाद्वा श्यामाकाद्वा श्यामाकतण्डुलाद्वा ।

एषः (This) | मे (my) | आत्मा (Self) | अन्तर्-हृदये (inside the heart) | अणीयान् (smaller than) | व्रीहेः वा (rice or) | यवाद् वा (barley or) | सर्षपाद् वा (mustard or) | श्यामाकाद् वा (millet or) | श्यामाक-तण्डुलाद् वा (kernel of millet or).

Translation

This Self of mine within the heart is smaller than a grain of rice, barley, mustard, or a kernel of millet.


Verse 3.14.3.2

Sanskrit

एष म आत्मान्तर्हृदये ज्यायान्पृथिव्या ज्यायानन्तरिक्षाज्ज्यायान्दिवो ज्यायानेभ्यो लोकेभ्यः ।

एषः (This) | मे (my) | आत्मा (Self) | अन्तर्-हृदये (inside the heart) | ज्यायान् (greater than) | पृथिव्याः (earth) | अन्तरिक्षात् (sky) | दिवः (heaven) | एभ्यः लोकेभ्यः (than these worlds).

Translation

This Self of mine within the heart is greater than the earth, sky, heaven, and all these worlds.


Mantra 3.14.4: The Resolve and Attainment

Verse 3.14.4.1

Sanskrit

सर्वकर्मा सर्वकामः सर्वगन्धः सर्वरसः सर्वमिदमभ्यात्तोऽवाक्यनादरः ।

Word-by-Word

सर्व-कर्मा (all-worker) | सर्व-कामः (all-desirer) | सर्व-गन्धः (all-odors) | सर्व-रसः (all-tastes) | सर्व-इदम्-अभ्यात्तः (pervading all this) | अ-वाकी (speechless) | अ-नादरः (unconcerned).

Translation

He performs all works, possesses all desires, odors, and tastes, and encompasses all this, silent and unconcerned.


Verse 3.14.4.2

Sanskrit

एष म आत्मान्तर्हृदय एतद्ब्रह्मैतमितः प्रेत्याभिसंभवितास्मीति ।

Word-by-Word

एषः (This) | मे (my) | आत्मा (Self) | अन्तर्-हृदये (inside the heart) | एतत् (this) | ब्रह्म (Brahman) | एतम् (this) | इतः (from here/life) | प्रेत्य (having departed) | अभिसंभविता-अस्मि (I shall become/attain) | इति (thus).

Translation

This Self of mine in the heart is Brahman; into Him I shall merge on departing from here.


Verse 3.14.4.3

Sanskrit

यस्य स्यादद्धा न विचिकित्सास्तीति ह स्माह शाण्डिल्यः शाण्डिल्यः ।

Word-by-Word

यस्य (of whom) | स्याद् (may be) | अद्धा (firm faith) | (no) | विचिकित्सा (doubt) | अस्ति (is) | इति (thus) | ह स्म आह (verily said) | शाण्डिल्यः (Sandilya).

Translation

He who has this firm faith shall indeed have no doubt; thus said Sandilya.
