Katha Upanishad Verse 1.2.9
Yama praises Nachiketas’ steadfastness and clarifies that the highest spiritual wisdom cannot be attained through logic or reasoning alone. It requires instruction from a realized teacher. He expresses a wish for more students who possess the same thirst for truth as Nachiketas.
Sanskrit Verse
Transliteration
naiṣā tarkeṇa matirāpaneyā proktānyenaiva sujñānāya preṣṭha | yāntvamāpaḥ satyadhṛtirbatāsi tvādṛṅno bhūyānnaciketaḥ praṣṭā || 9 ||
Translation
This idea cannot be reached by mere reasoning. This idea, Oh dearest, leads to sound knowledge, only if taught by another; thou hast reached it; Oh, thou art fixed in truth. May we find, Oh Nachiketas, a questioner like thee!
