Shvetashvatara Upanishad Verse 5

Sanskrit

प्रथमोऽध्यायः ।

पञ्चस्रोतोम्बुं पञ्चयोन्युग्रवक्रां
पञ्चप्राणोर्मिं पञ्चबुद्ध्यादिमूलाम् ।
पञ्चावर्तां पञ्चदुःखौघवेगां
पञ्चाशद्भेदां पञ्चपर्वामधीमः ॥ ५॥

Transliteration

pañcasrotāmbuṃ pañcayonyugravakrāṃ pañcaprāṇormiṃ pañcabuddhyādimūlām | pañcāvartāṃ pañcaduḥkhaughavegāṃ pañcāśadbhedāṃ pañcaparvāmadhīmaḥ || 5 ||

Translation

We meditate on the river whose water consists of the five streams (senses), which is quite crooked and difficult because of its five sources (elements), whose waves are the five vital breaths, whose original source is the five-fold perception; which has five whirlpools (objects of senses), whose speed of flow is the five-fold misery, which has fifty branches, and five segments (afflictions).
