Vakyapadiya Verse 1.123-126

Sanskrit

न सोऽस्ति प्रत्ययो लोके यः शब्दानुगमादृते । अनुविद्धमिव ज्ञानं सर्वं शब्देन भासते ॥ १२३ ॥

वाग्रूपता चेदुत्क्रामेदवबोधस्य शाश्वती । न प्रकाशः प्रकाशेत सा हि प्रत्यवमर्शिनी ॥ १२४ ॥

सा सर्वविद्याशिल्पानां कलानां चोपबन्धनी । तद्वशादभिनिष्पन्नं सर्वं वस्तु विभज्यते ॥ १२५ ॥

सैषा संसारिणां संज्ञा बहिरन्तश्च वर्तते । तन्मात्रामव्यतिक्रान्तं चैतन्यं सर्वजातिषु ॥ १२६ ॥

Transliteration

na so’sti pratyayo loke yaḥ śabdānugamādṛte | anuviddhamiva jñānaṃ sarvaṃ śabdena bhāsate || 123 ||

vāgrūpatā cedutkrāmedavabodhasya śāśvatī | na prakāśaḥ prakāśeta sā hi pratyavamarśinī || 124 ||

sā sarvavidyāśilpānāṃ kalānāṃ copabandhanī | tadvaśādabhiniṣpannaṃ sarvaṃ vastu vibhajyate || 125 ||

saiṣā saṃsāriṇāṃ saṃjñā bahirantaśca vartate | tanmātrāmavyatikrāntaṃ caitanyaṃ sarvajātiṣu || 126 ||

Translation

  1. There is no cognition in the world in which the word does not figure. All knowledge is, as it were, intertwined with the word.

  2. If this eternal identity of knowledge and the word were to disappear, knowledge would cease to be knowledge; it is this identity which makes identification possible.

  3. It is this which is the basis of all the sciences, crafts and arts. Whatever is created due to this can be analysed (and communicated).

  4. The consciousness of all beings going through transmigration is in the nature of the word; it exists within and without. The consciousness of all types of beings does not go beyond this essence.
